Guest guest
Hi Michele- When I had my titanium implant surgery in December the doctor also widened part of my ear canal including the opening, as can be seen in the before and after pictures. He did this for probably the same reason everyone gets it done: to help the ear breath and water to evaporate. In my case he also used soft tissue to fill a cavity (formed by the removal of a cholesteatoma over 20 years ago) which collected water and debris and contributed to regular external ear infections. Some of the things I notice that are different are that when it's cold outside my inner ear feels cold (this is cool actually- feels good!) and that now when I use a cottonball/vasaline ear plug I can actually put it in my ear a bit. As far as how much bigger specifically I'm not sure- I think that cardtlidge is removed in certain spots that may block the flow of air, perhaps like your husbands 'ridge'.Your husbands doctor also operated on my friends child when he got his cochlear implants. They think he's great and he is learning to speak at two years old. Amazing! From: michelerellla <iambored97601@...>Subject: Meatoplasty - for Dr. Gupta and/or Dr. Wareingcholesteatoma Date: Monday, February 14, 2011, 4:41 PM Hello, Just wanting an opinion. When doing a meatoplasty after a cwd radical mastoidectomy, how big do you make the canal? This is regarding my husband. His ent would like to widen the canal as he is getting fungal infections on a regular basis. He has hearing aides in both ears but it is his left that gives him issues. He also said something about a ridge needing some revision. Anyways, we are going to Portland to see our Doctor (Dr. O. McMenomey at OHSU) in a few weeks for his opinion but I was just wondering what you might think. Thanks for anything you have to offer. Guest guest
I just had surgery Feb 3 involving these same issues. Glad to hear that I'm not the only ear with a widened ear canal, I suspected it had something to do with the Cholesteatoma in the ear canal itself. This is my 2nd titanium implant, he said the old one (in for 30 years) had moved and had scar tissue. The surgery and recovery has been much simpler than I expected. My outside ear is very sensitive and there are some bursts of pain in the ear, but otherwise I'm feeling well. Much simpler than the sinus and adenoid surgery 2 months ago. I'm trying to be patient and will be thankful when the packing is removed. > > Hi Michele- > > When I had my titanium implant surgery in December the doctor also widened part of my ear canal including the opening, as can be seen in the before and after pictures.
