What a great subject! Just last week, it was raining here and I used my

umbrella. Yeah, being an LP mom, using an umbrella while raining and having

40mph wind gusts while trying to get a 5 yr. old LP out of the car is amusing

and frustrating. I'd rather wear a hoodie jacket and get wet than have to deal

with trying to hold the umbrella with all my might, risking the safety of the

5yo. running across the parking lot.

Though, I'd have to say when the wind isn't blowing like the Wizard of Oz, I

like to buy the smallest umbrella that isn't Hello Kitty or Sponge Bob. The

Totes brand is good, but very pricey. If you can find it on sale, even better!

We tried repeatedly to use the same umbrella, but it's hard on my back to lean

down so is dry, and for him to hold it is out of the question.  The best

alternative for us is two of the smaller umbrellas made for the purse or

briefcase.  Full-sized, but not as cumbersome.  That way I can carry them in

my

over-sized purse so we both have one.  The larger umbrellas stay in the purse

and at the front door in case of emergencies.

P.S.  We got caught in a rainstorm in Gatlinburg last summer and he refused to

buy the ponchos available at all the souvenir shops.  We broke down and spent

an

ungodly amount for an umbrella to appease his dignity.

Subject: Umbrellas and us

Obviously in light of all the many more serious issues we LP's live

with and encounter throughout our lives, I realize THIS is definitely

not exactly one of them, yet why not indulge me? Folks, I am referring

to UMBRELLAS!!! How many of you even try to make use of them?

I gave up years ago, deciding I was safer becoming drenched instead.

Besides, anyone ever near me TRYING to manage a huge monstrosity of an

umbrella was likely more safer too. I mean, it just isn't easy trying to deal

with umbrellas as long or as wide as we are tall, you know?!! And what

adult LP trying to be cool just like other adults, WANTS to use a kids' size

SpongeBob umbrella, or a Barbie one?!! I don't THINK so! Then WHAT do we

DO?!! What do YOU do?

Now just add a wheelchair and double your fun!

I gave up on umbrellas LONG ago. Impossible to wheel and hold an

umbrella at the same time. (I always thought if I could carry one, I'd

probably look like a mushroom from the average-height perspective!)

Instead, I always carry a rain poncho with me. I have found the child's

size ponchos are the correct length, and they're pretty cheap, too. I

think I paid less than 5.00 for the one I bought most recently - got it

at CVS. It's translucent vinyl, has a hood, and comes with it's own zip

pouch to carry it in. No Sponge-Bob Square-Pants or Elmo plastered all

over it, either.

Agreed. I''m ambulatory, but don't like carrying umbrellas and they are

useless when it's windy anyway, not to mention dangerous to all nearby. Boys

rain-jackets tend to be character-less as well. The hood might not be big

enough to cover a large dwarf forehead, but a Red Sox baseball cap works there.

Haha - what a great question! I'm 5'8 and living in Hong Kong where the

average person is about six inches shorter than me and I HATE umbrellas!

Everyone else always pokes me in the face with them or gets the corner

stuck in my hair (it's so crowded here that you're always bumping up

against other people) - it's so frustrating, and as a result I NEVER

carry an umbrella. I'd rather get wet than deal with the hassle

(although thinking about it, it's OTHER people's umbrellas that annoy me

more than my own, so I'm a bit illogical there hey... ;) Maybe I'm

hoping that my silent protest will cause everyone else to go

umbrella-less too ;) ). My kids are usually pretty dry in the stroller

though ;) But it's not just LPs who have umbrella issues ;) I hate them

too!!
