I'm surprised they do it at all. The apartment complex here does NOTHING to the

sidewalks. They said they can't, because if they do and someone falls and breaks

something, they can sue. But if they do nothing, they can't be held liable.

Snow plowing/apartment issues

Hello all,

So need advice. I love my apartment, one story, look like little houses,

private entrances, can reach the lock, great rent, its awesome. Problem though,

well two, first is that I live in Wisconsin, but my second is that we have

plowing issues. Due to the lovely blizzards and facing the field, my apartment

gets drifts up to the door where I can't even open to leave the sidewalk from my

apartment down the parking lot gets covered by a foot of snow. I am on a list of

four or five people that get special plowing priority, however today for

example, it is 10:33 and they haven't plowed yet by me. Luckily I had off

today, but if I had to go in this morning, basically I'd be S.O.L.

The thing is that by me they wait until everything is over before they plow.

It stunk because I couldn't go out yesterday to something I had planned because

I couldn't get to my car. On Friday there was a horrible blizzard and my 72

year old grandpa had to drive an hour to dig me out, then it turned out work was

cancelled.

My problem is that I can't keep calling into work saying I'm going to be 2 to

3 hrs late because they haven't shoveled by me yet. It just makes me mad, why

the heck couldn't they start shoveling at 6am? Do they not realize people have

to work???

I have no idea what I can say or do, they said I'm on a list, but I don't care

if I'm on a list when at 1030am on a monday I still can't get to my car? My work

doesn't care about a list, they care if I'm dependable or not.

Anyone have thoughts??

Here's a trick I do in my apartment (and house when I had one). Find

a kid (preferably a boy 13 to 18) in your neighborhood/complex. They

are almost always desperate for money. Tell them you'll pay them 20

bucks if they come shovel your walk to your car (and throw in another

10 if they do it at 6am). I don't get much snow (except for this

freaky year) but I do it for lawn mowing, trash removal, etc.

20 bucks?! I'm cheap. I give my neighborhood kids a dr. pepper if they'll take

out a wagon-load full of trash!

I used to hire a teenager to dig my car out of the snow. $10 or $20 and a

cup of hot chocolate did the trick!

Good idea...If you're physically mobile and don't have many orthopedic problems.

Hi JoAnn,

If it were that easy I don't think this thread would have even begun. A lot of

us would have to spend an entire snow storm outside shoveling to even make a

dent.(And that's my puny NJ snows - as compared to Wisconsin blizzards!) I tried

it one year and bloody wondered if I had lost all of my marbles. Between the

fact that a good fall would have set me up for an extended leave from work (and

how much possible damage to hips that cost upwards of 150 thousand to replace)

and the fact that my back cannot handle the shoveling, I gave in and make sure I

pay a contractor to have it done. (And thank the powers that I can pay, I know

not all can) Might have been just as helpful to suggest move to a

snowless state. Or better yet! Buy a flame thrower! Adopt a fire breathing

dragon!! Have one of the Bradford brothers give the snow and ice 'the look' and

make it melt (although they don't seem to be helping any up in the north west)

Moni, I feel your pain and have no useful suggestions. My snow removal is

usually also done later in the day, but I also have a lot of flexibility at

work. Keep thinking snow melting thoughts. If I find a dragon on post-holiday

sale I'll be in touch.

PS. I do have one of the smaller shovels and use it to remove the snow on my car

and sometimes to clean off the few steps in the front of the house.

Geez JoAnn, I NEVER thought about that before! (sarcasm) lol.  I do have a

shovel my size, what I DON'T have is the strength or stamina to shovel to wear

my car is, or it wouldn't be an issue.

LOL that was hilarious!

I love the part about the Bradford brothers giving the look. I do have to say

after meeting all three, Randy has the best one, sorry Bill!

Ahh yes, the lovely wisconsin weather. I called and was told I'm on a high

shoveling priority list, my high priority got me shoveled out at 1030 yesterday,

luckily I didn't have to work.

We are supposed to get another 4-6 inches tomorrow not including what we are

getting tonight.

How's the weather in NJ?

I agree that Randy's look would make me melt if I was ice. I think he can market

it.

I give those of you in the more wintery states a lot of credit, especially if

you're job isn't very flexible on hours lost.

In Jersey we've been spoiled by the last few mild winters. We've had snow, but

not much and usually followed by high temps or rain. Not so much this most

recent one that has me hiding more than usual. I thought for sure and

Noble would send rescue vehicles since they hadn't seen me in over a week! Their

lot isn't cleared very well.

In my younger days I remember venturing out in crazy snows, now at 52, not so

much. And I only show up at work after numerous calls to ask what the

university's parking lot looks like. Rarely have I gone in before noon on the

day after a snowfall. I've discovered the scooter hates the ice and snow as much

as its owner! There was talk of a parking deck and I was even willing to pay

extra for an indoor space just not to deal with walking on ice and attempting to

unload or store a scooter while doing the balance dance. Unfortunately that

project is on the back burner, for now. Someone fix this economy, soon!

I wish all of you who have to deal with this non-tropical weather a mild winter

and if not then lots of luck doing the balance dance safely.

Yes, but Randy is an awesome dude!  Bill is funny, and also awesome, just a tad

more reserved than than Randy..., I must say, has avoided the late-night

meetings that I have had with the other two...Dave, we have some making up to

do!  Next time there is a get-together, I would like to sponser some drinks and

have a sit-down talk...Miss you man,

Willow

O I agree....It's not easy...I live in the blizzard area as well....

Lots of snow out there...Still snowing today and the next several here...

We get the lake affect snow....It's fer sure ya have to stay on top of it

and don't let it pile up or wait till it's done...If your waiting

on that here..then ya might as well stay in till after spring.....so we stay

on top of it so it doesn't get so over whelming where ya CAN'T do it....Then

ya will have to call on someone to help and my husband and I are to

independent for that and/or to stubborn...I to have issues with ALL my

joints and need heating pads, hot baths, and massage afterward, and

this spring looks like I will have to start on my list of replacements, both

hips and knees....That my orthopedic doctor has been ready

to fix for the last 5 years...but I keep poking around not wanting to give

in....

My husband has joint issues, and immune issues...Gets a cold at the drop

of a hat....So ya I know what it's like...I live it every day as well....Trying

not

to fall is the tricky part :-)

I hear you about staying on top of it totally. The problem with Wisconsin, which

happened last Friday is that I went to bed with no snow, I woke up to 6 to 7

inches blowing.  There was no way to stay on top of that bad boy lol.

I should put a plow on the front of  my kitchen's kart lol, I bet the neighbors

would pay me!

Dont forget to use something to

protect your eyes in this weather!

I mean for as you are outside shoveling

and chipping away at the ice. Or even

just playing around in the snow. The

snow and little pieces of ice, pine needles,

and whatnot. Got contacts? Get a cheap

pair of sunglasses at least.

    We all hear- Be Careful!

                          Be Careful! And Be Careful!

       But its true!

                               Safety First.

          Have A Great Day!
