Guest guest
Anne, First let me say CONGRATS to you on your weight loss, you rock!!!!! I am not too sure what I would say, but maybe something like well thanks for your concern, but I do not weigh less than I should, I am actually right where I need to be- healthy. Now if you said you were 100lbs I'd say yeah, maybe you did lose too much but 157 sounds like a great weight to be. Good luck Anne and again CONGRATS!!!!! Guest guest
Hi Anne: Not sure but I'm 5'6 " tall and my ideal weight should be where you are about at now or less--so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you are above what you should be. Have you done any research on what your ideal weight should be for your height? Have you asked your family physician? Do you know what your BMI figures are and where that puts you ideally? There are alot of things to consider--but for being 5'2 " tall, I think I'd go to my doctor at my checkup time and ask for his/her opinion on this. People's opinions are subjective--there are anorexic people who think they are too fat.. and people who are morbidly obese who think they are just fine-- You need a PROFESSIONAL opinion on this and then tell people that they have a right to their own opinion, but you will go with your doctor's view --and then thank them for thinking of you. Guest guest
well, i get this comment a lot as well from people who knew me when i was heavy.. i think they are just not used to seeing you as " normal " My family always says to me... wow you are so thin.. i am not that thin, i am 5'5 and 150 pounds.. according to the rest of the world i am technically still over weight for my height .. So I just smile and say " yeah OK... " i especially laugh when a family member of mine who weighs in at like no joke 100 pounds and is my height, she says to me oh my you have got to stop loosing weight your so thin.. I just look at her and laugh... that's the pot calling the kettle black.. because when i tell people how much i used to weigh, they say oh my goodness i cant even imagine you being that big.. i am happy with were i am at right now, i am in a medium shirt and a size 10 jeans... i don't want to be any thinner or heavier. so as for all the people in the world that like to make comments.. just shrug them off and keep smiling.. Guest guest
Hi Ann: I have the same problem. I fight to weigh in at 140ish at 5'10 " tall. I am definitely too thin. I can see it myself. My husband says I'm too thin, my friends say the same. I walked into the chiropractors last week and the secretary screeched, " Oh Ann, you're too thin! " This is in front of an office load of people. I was so embarrassed! I just smiled and walked through to the back but it is very upsetting. I cannot gain weight due to the food allergies so I am stuck thin - never thought I'd see the day. I am not complaining - far from it - I can walk really well now (I rarely need my stick), I never use the wheelchair anymore AND I like wearing small sized fashionable clothes. However, dealing with rude and stupid people is hard! So Anne - we have two choices we can smile and walk away or we can? Anyone got any suggestions? Ann 304/140 ish Aug 24, 2004 How would you respond? I am not sure how to respond to a couple of people that I have talked to lately. One response was " thank you " the other was a no-response. I just smiled. So here is the problem. I have been told by a doctor and a couple of friends that I am too thin. The first one I laughed at...but they were serious (and she was a good friend). Okay, my face is a lot thinner than it used to be granted and you can now see my collar bones...were they even there before surgery? But I mean I weigh 157 pounds on a 5'2 " frame. I am not thin, by any matter of means. I wear medium sized shirts and a size 16 jean (as my excess belly skin is pretty large). My hubby was worried when I first talked about the surgery that I would get too thin, but he says I am not. So how would you respond to people that tell you, you are too thin? Guest guest
Dear Anne, If it were me, I would politely thank them for their concern. Then I would reassure them that you are being followed closely by your prmary care physician and your surgeon who both ( I would assume ) tell you that you're fine and that your weight is appropriate. Forgive me, but I think often times people get so used to us looking " fat " for so long, that they feel somewhat threatened or disconcerted by the changes in us. I think some part of them wants us to remain the way we always were, for them, not for us. This is pure conjecture btw....and maybe completely out of left field, so just take it with a grain of salt. For me, I'm 5'1.5 " and my weight loss goal is to get down to 110 lbs. People tell me that I would be too thin at that weight. Now currently I am about 174. The truth is as long as you feel good, and you reach a weight that you're comfortable in, that's the only thing that mattters. I, for one, cant wait to see my clavicles again! Also if your husband is happy with how you look, I think that's the best testomonial of all...tell that to your friends! You can brag with a grin how he cant keep his hands off of you!! Guest guest
Hi Anne - I think you handled it just fine: either " thank you " or just a smile. But for a little variety, here are a couple of other suggestions: (1) How about asking the person, " How much do you think a 5'2 " woman should weigh? " If they say " I don't know " then you could say " Well, all of the insurance charts say that a healthy weight for a 5'2 " woman is anywhere between 105 and 140. I weigh 157, so therefore, medically speaking, I am not too thin. " (2) How about saying, " This is what my doctor says I should weigh. All of my latest lab work has come back on target, and I am perfectly healthy for the first time in my life. " I, for one, would love to see you again. I am sure you look terrific! Hugs, Jami - > > I am not sure how to respond to a couple of people that I have talked > to lately. Guest guest
That's a great response. I do think we have to be careful. Anne the numbers sound to me like NORMAL numbers. I say, I am in the weight range for my height... BUT, when I had my plastic surgery and was " MALNOURISHED " I took a look at my body in a different light. I was REALLY thin, except in my adbomen and thighs...and it was like I hadn't noticed. I think I have a lot of muscle atrophy so it is deceiving. I weight 145ish and I am 5' 7 " . I wear a 10 which makes me feel just great, but I don't want to be any thinner no matter WHAT the number...I want to be healthy. You really have to listen to your doctor and people you trust, we really don't see ourselves as we are sometimes...LOL I didn't see myself as FAT as I was either...The other night a friend told me my pants were too big... " BE QUIET FLO " and I said, " but they can't be, these are 12s " ...then I went home and took a good look...they truly WERE TOO BIG...so I moved to the hand me down 10s I had and couldn't believe they FIT! Guest guest
Hi, Anne, an interesting response as one of the people that told me I was thin was my GYN. But...she also said that she could hardly wait to see me next year after I had the excess skin removed. I am not too thin. My BMI went from a 55 to ...hmm now I cant remember, but it is one point above the average range. Yes, I agree I could lose more weight. I feel good and can do all the things that I put off doing for so long or no longer was able to do. I was talking with a friend tonight and she said she thought people were saying that because my face has gotten thin. Its not all round any more and it startles people. I am happy with the weight loss and am not worried about where I am going to end up. I will probably lose another 20 lbs the surgeon thought. So that would put me around 137 or so. I am happy and busy with life. Anne Hansen 312-157 > > > I am not sure how to respond to a couple of people > > that I have talked > > to lately. Guest guest
Thank you for all the responses. Jami...someday we will get back down to LA. I will let you know. I have sent them several letters from doctors that have treated me over the years for " skin issues " So hopefully this will happen. Guest guest
I'm in the same place as you 5 " 2 " now weight from 157-160 on any given day, wear medium top and 12-14 bottom. I get the same thing. I certainly don't consider myself thin. I think I'm now average. Isn't size 14 the average size for a woman. Just had a panni 5 weeks ago and since it was only the " apron area " I may be a size smaller in pants when all the swelling goes down but my waist won't change much since the excess skin was below that and they just pulled down and up on the skin- no lipo either. Can't beleive that they removed 8 inches of skin. I was 255 pounds two years ago. Guest guest
I'm frankly surprised that a doctor would say that you are too thin at that weight, Ann. At 5'2 " , your calculated ideal body weight (a somewhat arbitrary calculation used for medication dosing amongst other things) is 110 pounds. I know this is very low, but my point is, you are nowhere near being underweight from a clinical standpoint. I've been told by people that I shouldn't lose any more weight, and I usually look at them, smile, and ask why they think that. The response is usually very interesting! I am 5'5 " , and have a calculated ideal body weight of 125 pounds. I have a sister who is about that weight and I like the way she looks. I don't know if I'll ever get that think without some heavy-duty dieting, but it's a goal I am striving for. My personal physician is extremely thin, so I rather doubt she'd get on my case for losing more weight. And when friends say it, I automatically question their motivation for doing so. Maybe they felt more comfortable around me when I was the " fat girl. " We all need to decide what weight we feel comfortable trying to reach. Some will want to be somewhat over their ideal weight, and some will be at or slightly under it. More and more, researchers are finding that staying slim is a good thing, and that slim people live longer than overweight ones. I have a son who is underweight, but he is healthy as a horse and virtually never gets ill. I honestly think that his health may be related to maintaining a lean weight and not eating too much junk. My husband, on the other hand, is still obese, and gets sick quite frequently. I used to get ill much more when I was heavy. OK, I'm rambling. But you get my point. If someone tells you that you are too thin, ask them why they think that. Their answer may prove very telling!! Joanie 5/25/04 Drs. Guest guest
Anne, I was successful getting insurance to cover my lower body lift by going to a physical therapist and doing some muscle testing. My balance was BAD and I believed and was apparently right that it had to do with the size of the pannus and its " movement " . Anyway, they covered almost all of it. They did rule that some of it was above customary but I decided to let that go because they ALSO covered the " butt augmentation " which I have no idea WHY but sure as heck didn't want to ask any questions! Guest guest
I would not worry what others say,t hey are used to you looking very different and now its the new you. According to Met life you should weight with one inch shoes anywhere from 111 pounds on a small frame up to 147 max with a large frame. But who really cares as long as you are happy, tell people you are happy with what you weigh and smile and leave it at that. If they continue tell them thanks for their concern but to drop the subject. If you go to this link you can see what we are all supposed to weigh. Guest guest
First of all, I can't believe a doctor would tell a 5'2 " patient that they were " too thin " at 157 lbs, when the BMI chart shows normal range for that height is 104-131. You are perhaps vertically challenged instead, as BMI chart shows 157 lbs is mid-range normal for someone who is 5'11 " . At my 2-year checkup, I was 112 lbs, which admittedly is the low-end of normal range (108-137) for my height (5'3-1/2 " ). My doctor also told me I was too thin. I gave her a big hug and told her " Thank- you, I've been waiting 50 years to have a doctor tell me that! " (All bloodwork and stats were normal.) My friends are all very supportive, and usually ask how I'm feeling (GREAT!) and to be assured that I'm not trying to lose more weight (I'm not; I'd really like to get back up to about 120, which would be mid-range " normal " for me). But to those who tell me " You're too thin " whose motivations are less clear, I respond, " Yeah, and now I'm working on being too rich! Guest guest
I had one of my good friends until I ahd surgery then after she got really weird on me. I noticed she has gained quite a bit of weight and doesn't call or talk to me much any longer. She had sent me an email telling I ahd set myself up for a ton of future surgeries like an article that this other woman had had. It was a cruel thing. The alst time she saw me she said " Are you sick? " No I am not sick, I feel great! everyone else says I look great so I have to sum it up to a jealously thing and the way people perceive success. Why do people have to be so cruel? Don't they realize this was a choice we made to improve our lives? Being thin is healthier than being heavy, it feels good too. > > Can you drink anything from the GNC store? Guest guest
Hi Sondra, You are so right. They are jeolous of you know cause you look marvoulous and they don't. If they don't want to be your friend cause you lost weight then they are no friends of yours. Don't let it get you down because you are #1, not them. Stay has healthy as you are and you have a new group of friends now right here.
