13 hours in the emergency room! (sorry, it's long)

This was a case for " DR House " . Hard to imagine 2 problems at the

same time, but I'm a complicated girl. It all started earlier in the

week when it dawned on me that I hadn't had a BM for a few days. Not

normal. Increased the amount of Citrucel. Still nothing. Thursday

morning, tried a Fleet enema. It did nothing. Friday around noon, I

started feeling like I had to go, and I was all the way across the

state from home! I stopped at every gas station along the way, kept

trying, but nothing but gas, and not much of that. Around 3 PM, not

only did I have that awful, full, gotta-go feeling, now I had pain in

my left, back kidney area, feeling like I'd been kicked by a horse.

I had plans to ride by motorcycle to the coast of Maine on Saturday

morning, and two of my fellow riders were at my house for dinner

Friday night for a final planning sesion. I threw the roast in the

oven, took a dose of phosphosoda, the stuff you take to clear out

before a colonoscopy. Surely that would work like Janitor in a Drum

and I'd soon be good as new. I drank at least 1 quart of water with

that stuff, since that's what the directions say to do. The roast

was ready 90 minutes later, but I wasn't. My friends encouraged me

to call my DR, which I finally did. Got the MD covering him, who

knew nothing about my history, so he sent me to the ER.

I arrived at the ER around 10 PM, so got the end of that shift's

staff. At 11:00, another whole crew came on, and at 7AM the third

crew came in. Here's the GREAT part....to each and every tech, RN,

MD and student, I told me MGB story. Every single one said, " YOU

LOOK GREAT! " Apparently, Roux n Y patients have a pasty, not-so-

healthy look about them. Mind you, they were telling me I looked

great when I was at my worst!

They atarted with a regular set of X-rays of the abdomen. Yup,

something looked weird, but they needed a better look. I then

underwent (with my new friend, morphine) an " intestinal study " where

they gave me an enema with contrasting material, tipping the table on

which I was placed, in all sorts of positions to help move that stuff

around (much as you'd tip a cake pan to spread the batter around).

It wasn't uncomfortable, and I was too doped up and sleepy to care

about vanity. That enabled them to follow the whole intestinal track

looking for whatever was wrong. The great thing about it: It

loosened up everything and for about 24 hours, on and off, I passed

lots and lots of watery stuff and felt 5 pounds thinner.

The bad thing was, since they did this in the middle of the night,

when I woke up (after the morphine wore off) I still had the back

pain. Took a while to convince them that it could be a stone or

other kidney damage since I've had a history of stones since the MGB

and no, I don't writhe in agony or get nauseous. Since the MGB, I

feel abdominal issues differently. I know something is wrong, I feel

horrible,but not like a " normal " person.

So, the nice day nurse gave me another shot of morphine and sent me

for a CAT scan. Sure enough, the CAt scan showed trails in the

kidney that proved a stone had moved and was now in the ureter.

So, here's my theory of how awful I felt. No one really knows why my

intestines (which were not actually blocked) just stopped working.

There was no sound, there was no movement, they just took a vacation.

The kidney stone just decided to give me 2-for-one pain.

I made it worse by drinking all that water! With my intestines not

working, they weren't helping to get rid of any of it, and I felt

pregnant! My left kidney was dealing with its own issues, so it

didn't process any of it, either. I didn't pee much even after

drinking all that.

However, later in the morning, besides dealing with the heavenly,

happy passing of that stuff in my intestines, I started to pee what

felt like a quart at a time. Apparently, I passed the stone then,

becuse the pain then was all gone.

I was released from the ER around 11AM Saturday, came home and slept,

and slept and slept with potty breaks only. I ate 1/2 of a yogurt.

This morning (Sunday) I woke up around 11:00 after having slept

peacefully through the night. My hubby took me out forbreakfast

where I had 2 over-easy eggs and 1 slice of rye toast. Best food in

the world, at least this morning.

There were lots of theories from the assorted people to pass through

my hospital room. One surgeon, who does regular by-pass surgery,

told me that when we lose this much weight, that heavy layer of fat

that normally protects our internal organs, does not melt away

evenly. For some patients, it forms an almost swiss cheese surface,

and it is possible that some portion of my intestines wriggled into

that part, forming a kink like a garden hose. The X-ray material

filled it like a water balloon to open it back up. I like that

explanation.

Another theory is that my intestines just stopped working for a

while. I don't like that explanation.

I just think it's weird to have two issues, seemingly unrelated,

happen at the same time. I'm just glad it happened when I was at

home, when the hospital staff could see my former records, see my

former cat scans, get a handle on what my guts do.

I'm just glad to feel better. We're gonna try that trip to Maine in

a few more weeks. BTW, I joined weight watchers last week and at my

first weigh-in, I'd gained 1.8 pounds. Now I know why. I was FOS!

So glad to hear your feeling better. I am curious as to why you joined

weight watchers and how that will work for you. I've actually thought about it

because my weight loss has slowed so much.

I'm now down 6 1/2 pounds since Friday. Still not hungry. I was thinking about

a revision because I was gaining so fast, but now I know what was happening, and

as long as my appetite stays gone, I may be just fine without one!Marilyn Morin

Gee, Marilyn, you sure do seem to have a flair for the dramatic! I

am very relieved to hear that you are OK, and all's well that ends

well.

I guess you are not planning to go to Wing Ding in Greenville week

after next? We were originally planning to go, but we took our

vacation early, and can't get any more time off work to go anywhere

else (not to mention the fact that we're now broke).

I am glad to hear you're on the mend and still figuring on going on

your trip to Maine. It will do you the world of good.

I'm just glad I feel sick but don't feel pain when these things happen! We had

already canceled WingDing because the other rider going with us tore his knee

apart and had surgery, so he can't ride for a while. Instead, we plan to go to

Wings Over The Smokies in Ashville, NC Sept 18-20th. Hopefully, we'll both be

better then! Be well...Marilyn Morin Colchester, Vermont
