It's been 3 and a half years and I don't feel much there.

I can finally feel the implant and incision is still there and

little lumpy. It will be while before your swelling go away before

you can feel anything.

My first hook up is this afternoon.

For me the answer is yes I can feel both of

mine. I received my second implant on March 6 and

because of swelling it has actually been in just the

last week that I have been able to find it. I knew

pretty much where it was but couldn't find it and had

a difficult time getting the magnet to stick (I tried

it with my other processor when it was turned

off--trying to see what length coil I want).

Hope that answers your question.

Hi, ,

Congratulations on your CI and good luck at hook-up. Yes, you will be

able to feel the area of implant. The swelling will probably go down a bit

more for you. You're only a few weeks out from surgery. Not to worry, it is

perfectly normal.

girl,

Are you messing with your head already? Right now, so soon after

surgery, you have swelling in the area. Yes you can feel the outline of

the device if you really search hard for it. Har covers it, for those of

us with hair. In time, the device will actually become easier to find

because the skull keeps growing, and it can push the device closer to the

skin surface. This is why the surgeon routes out a place to put the

device and sutures it in.

Hey all:)

You guys have been VERY busy talking " techno babble "

out there:) It's great that there is a new forum to

chat about technology stuff. I'm kinda slow in that

techno stuff. I'm more of a.... " well, if it ain't

broken.... " kinda girl :) I'm sure I'll have to check

it out eventually:)

Just wanted to ask those with the CIs, I just had my

CI surgery April 3rd and was wondering if you all can

actually palpate the device on your head? Is there

always a lump? Mine's not prominent or anything, but

I was just curious if it will always be that palpable.

I know I still am healing and that the swelling isn't

completely gone. Just curious.:)

Hey ,

I know they also have a test called bacteriophage or phage testing

or studies. But, this is where the inject a protein like a virus and

then take blood samples for several weeks to determine the bodies

response to it. It has passed the clinical trials and my son is

waiting to do this test with Dr Filipovich at Cincinnati Childrens

once it is FDA approved. I am sure this will be something that will

be done alot once it is approved. It is another way to see how the

immune system functions. This test might be confused with phage

therapy as previous replies have stated.

That does seem long, but not totally unheard of.

We were told to be back to the hospital at 6am and he wasn't taken

back to the OR until after 8:30. The poor little boy (Caleb) after us

had to wait for to be finished entirely before they even

brought him back (I think that was around 10:30). They always do the

youngest babies first, so maybe there is a littler one who is

scheduled to go first in your case, and they just don't know how long

that oen will take so they want you there right away (or in the event

of a no-show).

I figured as much.

Being there at 6am and not going back until 8 or 8:30 is our usual

schedule.

It just sounds like a long time for him not to be able to have anything to eat

or drink.

I keep forgetting my baby is not the baby(youngest)anymore.

They do it the same way at ish Rite.............the youngest goes first.

And we actual have be able to go earlier before because the youngest child's

parents let him eat a HOTDOG!

Anyway I will deal with it.

Thanks,

Hi Tasha,

Talk to jane about your concerns. I know they try very hard to

get the castings on the younger ones first in the day.

When we were desperate to get Max into Erie, when Dr. Sturm was on

medical leave, I took any appointment time for a sooner date. It

ended uo being 2 pm before Max was casted. Dr. even tried to

get Max in sooner when he saw Max the day before, but was

unsuccessful.

Call Jane, she'll get an answer for you as to why it's so late.

Yes, waiting sucks, but only 1 out of 7 casts was Max ever firstt.

The latest earliest was 10 am, the latest 2pm. It gets harder the

older they are. I noticed Max had ahard time waiting on Thursday and

he was 2nd, talking him back at 11:15.

Hi Tasha (again).

I believe they let Max have apple Juice until 6 am for his 8 am

casting. Get that clarified first. I try to keep Max uup as late as

he can tolerate and pump him with snacks/milk the night before. I

usually only get him to 9:15 and he's wiped, but it's something!

Thanks Aekta.

I do the same thing with . BIG dinner and then the boys graze until

bedtime.

He can have clear liquids(water, 7up, apple juice-which they do not drink) 2

hours before surgery. It does state that is the paper work I received today.

He will do fine.

Aekta,

I had one of the nurses at Erie flip out on me for giving Ian apple juice a few

hours prior to casting. It was actually their error because I had received a

paper saying that he needed a full bladder for an ultra sound they were doing

first thing in the morning. Well, they were supposed to cross that part out and

they forgot to. It was my only experience with a rude person there in the 2 1/2

years of going up there. They did end up still casting him, but they really

didn't want to. I still get steamed when I think of it! LOL. Anyway, I would

definitely check on that apple juice thing before trying it out.

Tasha, we've always gone in at 6 am (ugh!). I think the latest we were ever

taken back was 10 am. They often have last minute changes in the schedule due

to other kids needing surgery or whatever. I would ask if you really need to be

there at 6 am. One time we called and they let us come in later. Just make

sure if they let you do admission a bit later to make sure the morning staff

gets the message otherwise you will be getting frantic calls at 6 am.

The times we were at Erie ( of course Lexi was young then) there was still a

wait. It is so hard I know to have that time because they get hungry, thirsty and

very fussy. Through all of Lexi's casts and hand operations though the thing

that has always worked for us is this. The night before I usually give her a

heavy meal such as pasta and then since she can't eat anything after

midnight...usually around 11 Pm I will let her have a small bowl of cereal and

toast. There were times I would just reheat some plain pasta for her also

instead of the cereal. She was still up at 11, because those nights before I

found if I let her stay up late, she would sleep later and hopefully her tummy

would still have a full feeling. Of course as soon as you get there they take

all the vitals so she never stayed asleep once we were at the hospital, but

being allowed to stay up late meant she was more tired and in between pokings

and proddings, she would always doze back off. I know at Lexi's last hand

operation she could have clear fluids up until 2 hours before our time to be

there ( make sure on this though) so in the morning I would let her have a sippy

cup of water or Gatorade ( she was allowed to have Gatorade as long as it was

the clear lemon lime ) That helped a little in satisfying her thirst. Of course

if you can't let stay up late, try a meal like pasta the night before and

put dinner off for as long as you can, and then give him a snack before bedtime

if you are willing.

Best of Luck

Re: Just curious

I figured as much.

Being there at 6am and not going back until 8 or 8:30 is our usual

schedule.

It just sounds like a long time for him not to be able to have anything to eat

or drink.

I keep forgetting my baby is not the baby(youngest)anymore.

They do it the same way at ish Rite.............the youngest goes first.

And we actual have be able to go earlier before because the youngest child's

parents let him eat a HOTDOG!

Anyway I will deal with it.

Thanks,

Tasha

brought him back (I think that was around 10:30). They always do the

scheduled to go first in your case, and they just don't know how long

Thanks Tracey.

First I don't think I could stay up until 11pm (LOL) and I don't think the boys

could either. I sometimes wish I was a night person. Not even. I'll take an

early morning over staying up late any day.

Since we will be in a different place(hotel) it may be easier to keep them up.

And I always do a heavy meal and LOTS of snacks right up until bedtime.

It does say clear liquids 2 hours before, but I will double check on that closer

to the date.

For now we wait to hear what Dr. says.

How is the heat in Houston?

I feel so bad for my boys. They beg me to go out daily and I just can't do it

with . Even early mornings are awful. We went to church on Sunday and from

church to the car he got real upset. Being upset it got super HOT. We don't

live far away, but by the time we got home and took all his clothes off he had a

red rash on every part of his body that was next to the cast. Needless to say

we were indoors the rest of the day. And have been. I am kinda going CRAZY!

I am SO ready for Fall and I am sure we will have a good 2 more months of this

heat.

Take care,

Hi Tasha,

Your post reminded me of the cooling vests. Does anybody have one? Do they

work really well? I am sure with the 100+ degrees many of us are getting they

would be really handy. Just a thought.

scheduled to go first in your case, and they just don't know how long

that oen will take so they want you there right away (or in the event

of a no-show).

said that once she got home from the ETP's, that they were almost ready

to go....

She'll be posting info about the cooling vests once she gets home next week!

Take care,

and Evan

Your post reminded me of the cooling vests. Does anybody have one? Do they work

really well? I am sure with the 100+ degrees many of us are getting they would

be really handy. Just a thought.

We don't live

far away, but by the time we got home and took all his clothes off he had a red

rash on every part of his body that was next to the cast. Needless to say we

were indoors the rest of the day. And have been. I am kinda going CRAZY!

I am SO ready for Fall and I am sure we will have a good 2 more months of this

heat.

Take care,

Tasha

I know at Lexi's

last hand operation she could have clear fluids up until 2 hours before our time

to be there ( make sure on this though) so in the morning I would let her have a

sippy cup of water or Gatorade ( she was allowed to have Gatorade as long as it

was the clear lemon lime ) That helped a little in satisfying her thirst. Of

course if you can't let stay up late, try a meal like pasta the night

before and put dinner off for as long as you can, and then give him a snack

before bedtime if you are willing.

Best of Luck

Tracey

Re: Just curious

I figured as much.

Being there at 6am and not going back until 8 or 8:30 is our usual

schedule.

It just sounds like a long time for him not to be able to have anything to eat

or drink.

I keep forgetting my baby is not the baby(youngest)anymore.

They do it the same way at ish Rite.............the youngest goes first.

And we actual have be able to go earlier before because the youngest child's

parents let him eat a HOTDOG!

Anyway I will deal with it.

Thanks,

Tasha

That does seem long, but not totally unheard of.

We were told to be back to the hospital at 6am and he wasn't taken

back to the OR until after 8:30. The poor little boy (Caleb) after us

had to wait for to be finished entirely before they even

brought him back (I think that was around 10:30). They always do the

youngest babies first, so maybe there is a littler one who is

scheduled to go first in your case, and they just don't know how long
