When I reply (as I'm doing now) my reply is sent to both the person who authored

the post and the group (i.e. Twirly Girly <Twirly Girly1@...>;

dwarfism ).  I've not had an issue except when I don't pay

attention and unintenionally click on either " sender " when I want to post to the

group or " all " when I want to post privately to the sender.

Subject: Technical issue

I'm curious as to why the posts to the dwarfism group don't have the

" Reply To dwarfism " in the header? I belong to a whole

bunch of groups, and this is the only group that doesn't include

the " Reply To " field in the header. Hence, when one clicks on " Reply " to

respond to a message, only the email address of the individual who

*wrote* the post is put in the address field of the reply. So, has to

remove THAT email address, and instead replace it with the

dwarfism addy.

This can get very confusing, especially if a member replies to a group

post *privately* to a member. Because the subject line will say

, one can mistakingly think the message was sent to *the

group,* not as a private message to an individual member. That makes it

far too easy to accidentally send your reply to that person to the

group, instead of to that individual privately.....

If I haven't explained this in a way that's clear, just ask and I'll try

it again!

Nan,

When I click " Reply, " it only addresses the post to the person who wrote

the post I'm responding to. If I click " Reply all, " it addresses the

post to the person who wrote the post I'm responding to *and* the group.

When people reply to a group post, it usually isn't necessary to send

the reply *twice* to a member (the person they're responding to *and*

the group). It gets confusing, at least for *me,* if I get two copies

of the same post when someone responds to something I wrote (makes me

think is screwing up again and sending out dupes). Or, I could

accidentally respond to a reply to one of my posts sent privately and

send my response to the entire group (been there, done that). More

often, I might send a reply privately when it's intended to go to the group.

Of course, all this could be an issue only because of my (rapidly)

advancing age ;-)

As I said, I'm just curious because of all the groups I belong

to, this is the only one that doesn't have the " Reply to " in the header.

So, for the dwarfism group, the method to reply is the reverse of every

other group of which I'm a member. For the others, if I click " Reply "

the post is sent ONLY to the group, but if for some reason I want the

person to whom I'm responding to get a second copy of the message in

their inbox, I have to click " Reply to. "

I have the same problem. The other week, I wrote something that was

intended for the whole group and I send it to just one person by

mistake. In other , if I hit " reply " in Thunderbird, it will

put the groups address - but this one does a reply to the sender

for some reason. Maybe it's just a Thunderbird issue? I have to go down

to the bottom of the message and hit " reply to group " instead - or

manually type in the email address... or do a reply-all and then delete

the other email address... but it's not just you, TG!

I don't think it's an issue with T-bird (I use T-bird as well), because

T-bird doesn't " supply " the headers. That comes from the source sending

the message. It must have something to do with the way the group is set

up. If it were a T-bird issue, then it would be the same thing with ALL

the groups I'm subscribed to, and it's not. It's only THIS group.

The moderators of the group may be able to confirm this, but I believe the

reason this group is set to reply to the individual rather than to the group

is to slow down the flame wars that happened in the past over hot button

topics. If an angry reply goes by default to one person than to the list,

then it is less likely to turn into a massive argument which chases people

away from the group...

I've got Gmail set to " Reply All " by default so I don't generally run into

the problem...

Mike is right. This group was formed over 12 years ago, and this was

the default setting for . I was a moderator (along with Dan

Kennedy) from 2002-2004. During that time, when offered a

chance to change the settings, we decided not to, because there were a

lot of divisive flame wars going on, and we thought it better that you

had to intentionally hit " reply all " in the heat of the moment (saved

a lot of public embarrassment). Three or four years back the

moderators held a vote to see if people wanted to change the settings

again, and group voted not to.

In reality, Facebook has decimated this group. If you look at the

number of posts in 2002 (averaged 600 a month) to this year (average

of 70 a month) that's almost a 90% decline.

I personally miss those days when there were flame wars. Those hot discussions

between the Bradford brothers, Dan Kennedy, Nick Koontz, etc. were great. It

provided a virtual community when we're miles apart from one another. As much

as I enjoy Facebook too, I do miss how active this list used to be.

I may just start a flame war just to rile up some people and make sure they're

still here, alive and kicking. :)

I think all the dwarfism related have gone down in participation

after Facebook, though. If you look at the Parents of Little People (POLP),

POLP2, Adult Dwarfism, and Women with Dwarfism group, the participation is

almost at a slow leaking drip.

With this downturn in participation on the , I'm hoping that there

is more need for people to connect face-to-face, like at LPA conferences.

Shameless plug insert here:

We'll be doing a dwarf parenting workshop at the LPA National Conference this

summer. It's more of a sharegroup than a teaching workshop.

See you all there!
