Hi, Lilli,

OMG, my name is Lily too! It's great to discover this

group. I'm new to this group, but not to Achalasia.

I discovered A when I was 6 months pregnant with my

last child. My little girl turns 9 this Sunday.

I contracted a bladder infection and had to go on some

antibiotics. They were big pills & even cutting them

in half didn't help. Luckily my baby was a good size

because I didn't eat too well in the last 3 months.

And after she was born I lost a lot of weight. I went

from about 160 pounds down to 105 pounds by the time

my surgery date came - in January of 1999. So in 19

months I shed about 55 pounds.

Therefore, I agree with Ann in regards to waiting to

become pregnant.

I hope this helps, Lilli.

Bye for now, Lily [from the northern tip of Vancouver

Island]

Hi Lilli -

Also, most HMO's allow for second opinions, so I would say if your

regular doctor won't refer you, I would find another doctor who

will. That's ridiculous that they won't let you take control of

your own healthcare.

Just my two cents.

Welcome I'm Sapphyre I have 124 pounds to lose (or did I'm down 30). Florida huh? I hope Alberto leaves you guys alone, doesn't look good :(. But glad to have ya at the group we're real supportive round here :) I've lost a great deal of weight twice and it's always found its way back to me, this time I'm doing it right, doing it slow, and going to stick with it for life. Its hard but it's not out of our reach, we just have to really want it :). Let us hear how you're doing! tazzbabygirl@... wrote: Hi EveryoneI just found this group. Hi EveryoneI just found this group. I am 200 pounds over weight and will be here along time. Welcome , It's nice to meet you. I think at 100+ most of us will be here for quite a spell.I have been over weight all my life. One time about 20 yearsago I got down to 200 for about one day maybe then started back up thescale again.I hope you are able to see those numbers again. It will take time though so please don't get discouraged. We have found there is no magic bullet. But if you hunt around and find a eating and exercise plan that works for you and can stick prettty close to it you will lose your weight again. I am married to hubby Bill who is a great support to me. You are one step ahead already. You would not believe how many of us don't get the support that you would think we should get from the people we love.Sad, but true. If you have support at home and support here, then I really believe you can get back to your goal weight a little easier. I have to say if I didn't find support from the internet I may have quit so very long ago.Wehave been married 2 1/2 years and we still love each other like we didwhen we 1st meet. Ahhhhh. 2 1/2 years. Why you two are still on your honeymoon! LOL It's nice you can say that. So many marriages fail nowadays in it seems less then 6 months.:) People don't seem to take the time to make a marriage work after getting into them or take the time to be "sure" they know the person well before jumping into marriage. He has children and I have none. We have a dog namedTazz she is mastiff mixed.I bet you treat her like your child:) Our pets in our family gets the royal treatment at times. My mom's parrot just died a few days ago and it was heart wrenching for her. This is a woman who cooks for her dogs 2 meals a day. We have a friend Tim that is at our housealot. He is 26 and I have know him for 6 or 7 years. He is watching hisweight too.Sounds like a excellent walking buddy! Maybe he'll even join in the same diet paln you choose. Have a great day and eat right. You too. Keep us posted on how things are going. You never said how you are planning on losing your weight. I personally chose counting calories and portion control(which I messed up badly on today) and definitely moving my body a lot more. There are people here on WW, adkins, well almost any diet you can think of.

Hi Rob

Welcome to our family, for that is what this list is, it is a family with some

wonderful and lovely diseases in the Spondyloarthropathy group of diseases.

I +Dave or, Fr. Dave and I developed AS and Rheumatoid Arthritis first, then

Reiter's and Psortiatic Arthritis.

I have found Neutontin 2400 mgms daily combined with OxyContin SR 80 mgms daily

and Voltaren (diclofenac) 150 mgms daily, has finally worked for me and it

keeps the pain very managable as long as I do not try and jump around like a

spring chicken.

This is a wonderful caring group and no question about our diseases is off

limits.

Hi Betty! I'm not in NC, I'm in Texas but I'm Sapphyre, 45, and when I started I had 124 pounds to lose, now I have 94. How much weight are you looking to lose? Are you on a program? Once you get in the mindset to get the weight off, and get yourself disciplined to follow your program, you'll do fine. Exercise, at least here because of the heat, is the hardest part for me. I'm used to being lazy :) Good luck on your journey you'll find a ton of support here! :) jobcoachbetty <bettyboop1954@...> wrote: Hi everyone, I just joined this group today. Tim,

Welcome to the wonderful world of anthrax immunization litigation! SSKRP

waged a long battle and were eventually defeated by Congress having shielded

Bioport from tort actions based on the " quality " of its product. The

opposite of Progress is Congress. Stated even more cynically, we get the

government we deserve.

Since you're still on AD, you need to (1) keep all your appointments and do

everything your physicians tell you to do; (2) be sure to get an

Endocrinology consultation; (3) complain to your treating physicians about

every health and medically-related problem you have; (4) keep a copy of all

your medical records, all your fitness reports and promotion

recommendations, and every other communication you receive that might

reflect on your superiors' assessment of your ability to do the duties of

your " office, grade, rank, and rating " . If necessary, DEMAND copies of

paperwork, especially with respect to all the MEBs and PEBs (both Informal

and Formal). Do NOT appear before a Formal PEB without someone you know to

be solidly on your side representing you! Keep a notebook of your own with

the dates, times, people, and places of all important events such as routine

appointments, x-rays, other studies, conferences with your superiors, and

everything else you want to record. The notebook is not a legal document,

but it will act as an " index " of sorts, allowing you to quickly reference

important events.

If you have " subclinical " hypothyroidism (abnormal lab values but normal

thyroid hormone levels), monitor your health carefully and watch for

symptoms of " clinical " (overt) hypothyroidism. If you're " clinically "

hypothyroid, you should be on thyroid hormone replacement. This should make

you not World-Wide Qualified (the Air Force term). If you have

constitutional symptoms due either to under- or over-medication with thyroid

hormone replacement, you need to document that. You need to get a baseline

DEXA (bone density) scan, and monitor your fasting cholesterol and other

blood lipids along with your thyroid hormone status. (There's a lot of

information on the Internet.)

Lastly, I strongly urge you to retain and follow the advice of your own

attorney. I suggest J. Byron Holcomb (bylaw@...), the attorney who has

represented me through several significant -- and in one, a landmark --

confrontation with the government. (I get nothing from recommending him,

and have paid my own way all through all my litigation.) I also suggest you

contact the Disabled American Veterans National Service Office near you.

(The DAV website is www.dav.org.) They will help you while you're still in

the military, and will represent you before the VA. I'm a Life Member, and

they've done exceptionally well for me.

I don't claim that my recommendations are necessarily the best for you, but

they worked well for me and they're a good place to start. Other

" " list members will likely have suggestions more appropriate to

your particular situation, and have more current experience. I also suggest

you become familiar with the DoD Disability Evaluation System, and your

rights under it. You'll need to know it very well in order to navigate it

effectively, so the earlier you start learning about it, the better off you

are. Start at the DAV website for that and related information.

This should get you started. Keep us informed.

Good luck!

WOW! Thanks for replying and all the information! I wish I found

the site earlier. I didn't know the outcome of the SSKRP thing.

That's totally wrong! Like I mentioned before, I refused at first.

I looked on the internet and found out that it wasn't safe. However,

I was married in 1996 and it was March 1998. My Korean wife (who

speaks English very well) and I were having problems due to

finances. We were at Ft. and it wasn't the best conditions.

Anyway, we're still married. I didn't have a college degree and

didn't feel like flipping burgers. The only way I knew how to

support her was to remain in the military. So, I went armed with the

knowledge I found out to my CO, and he is the one that said that I

have a choice...take it as an E-4 (my rank back then), or as an E-1

(after UCMJ action). So, I took it. I believe everyone who was in

Kuwait, or in the Gulf, in March 1998, when they first gave it out,

had FAV020. I had, I believe, 4 of my 6 shots from it...maybe 5. I

tried to not take it, but they found me.

As far as my hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed in September of 2002

at Bolling AFB. My TSH was over 100...normal levels are between .5

and 3.5. I also tested positive for the thyroid antibodies, which

meant I had Hashimoto's Syndrome. My thyroid is gone. I recently

went to NIH nuclear medicine to get a scan done, and they couldn't

see anything. The thyroid uptake was negligible. I also had an

ultrasound done, and they couldn't see anything. My weight was 220,

which was the most I have ever weighed. After I took Synthroid, my

weight dropped to 185 in a month. My TSH also dropped to .005, which

meant I was hyperthyroid. They decreased my dosage of Synthroid, and

my weight went back up to above 200.

I was diagnosed so late because the Army doctors didn't check my

blood any when I had gained weight, dry skin, headaches, brittle

nails, hair falling out, muscle weakness, memory loss, and other

symptoms of a thyroid disorder.

I have to close this earlier than I wanted to, but I will take

your advice and keep a log and talk with a lawyer. Thank you for

replying. I do hope that I can get in touch with people in the same

boat as me and get help. Everyone, take care.

Tim,

I'm glad things are working out for you. " Tuning " a patient's thyroid

hormone replacement is a fine science that's not well understood. (I pause

here to mention that I'm an Internal Medicine physician with subspecialty

training in Endocrinology.) It turns out that people tend to feel better

when an adequate dose of T4 (thyroxin) is augmented by T3

(triiodothyronine). One source mentioned T3 should be about 2% of T4. Your

mileage may vary. Most people FEEL better with small amounts of T3 added to

their usual T4 dosage. Feeling better is no small thing, so I would

encourage you to explore this option with your Endocrinologist.

In theory at least, people create " enough " T3 by peripheral conversion of

T4. But in normal, euthyroid people, the thyroid gland itself produces a

small amount of naturally-occurring T3, so it makes sense to add small

amounts of T3 to one's T4.

I recently found out that I may indeed be in the same boat as you are. I

was asked to participate (as a study subject, not investigator) in a study

on diabetes recently at my local VA medical center. I am always interested

in such things, so I followed up with them. I tested negative for diabetes

(I'm not at risk, so being invited definitely stirred my interest), but I

did find out to have an elevated TSH, though am currently euthyroid. (This

is the definition of " subclinical " hypothyroidism.) When I felt my own

thyroid afterwards, I found to my amazement that it is indeed larger than

it ever has been. (For the record, I don't routinely monitor my thyroid! I

feel it as a matter of course when I check my cervical lymph nodes if I

think I'm developing either a cold or an exacerbation of the Adult-Onset

Still's Disease that the anthrax shot bestowed upon me a dozen years ago.)

So you came along at the time when I've been reviewing the literature on

thyroid disease. (Not much has changed since I last reviewed it.)

I just checked AFI 48-123 (V.2, P.60), the Air Force Physical Standards, as

well as the relevant part of AR 40-501, the Army version. To my amazement,

hypothyroidism is not listed specifically as being disqualifying for

retention on active duty, although it's disqualifying for " appointment,

enlistment, or induction " . Go figure.

Take care!

The latest news about me. I went to my doctor at Ft. Myer's

Rader Medical Clinic and ask he to sign the memo that people get

when they get taped, and are found to be over...the memo basically

says that the person is found to be a good subject for enrollment in

a weight management program and asks the doctor to check 1 of 2

blocks: the weight is due to a medical reason or it is not due to a

medical reason. I fully expected her to say that it is due to a

medical reason...HOWEVER, she does not feel that way, since I am

being treated for it. I have been doing something I am not supposed

to be doing...taking more Synthroid than what she recommended...My

TSH was 81 back in January, and she changed my dosage to .150. In

April, it was down to .008, and she decreased it to .137

(combination of .112 and .25), however, I continued to take

the .150, thinking I would lose some weight if I exercised more.

Well, besides memory loss, inability to concentrate sometimes, being

jittery at times, increased heartrate, etc, I maintained weight, if

not gained. I exercised 4-5 times a week being at least moderate

exercise for at least 30 minutes. Sometimes, I rode a bicycle 60 or

70 miles averaging 12-17 MPH, which should burn some calories.

Anyway...

I volunteered for a study at NIH,

http://clinicalstudies.info.nih.gov/cgi/detail.cgi?A_2005-DK-

0119.html, and am not fully eligible because I don't meet the BMI

requirement. I have to have a BMI of < 30, and mine is at 31.

Check out the study and let me know what you think. I was able to

get a nuke medicine scan of my thyroid, and test the uptake. It is

almost 0. I was also able to get an ultrasound and they couldn't

see it. Good ole' Hashi destroyed the thing. They haven't seen it

before in a non-thyroidectomized person.

Well, I am very tired and need my sleep. I wake up at 0400 to

get ready for work. I rode my bicycle 65 miles around Lancaster,

PA, saw Floyd Landis' childhood home, where his parents still live

(BTW, he is NOT guilty...did you know that he is HYPERthyroid?...do

you know if alcohol, Synthroid, and whatever he is taking for his

hip, as well as other medication, all mixed together can give a

false result...along with a maximum effort?) That's a totally

different forum..but he is hyperthyroid. I thank you for all your

information. It is very valuable and I will call some people and

get them working for me. Thank you. Take care.
