Guest guest
Jan what was that condition that I related to that fit the symptoms in your legs to a tee? I forgot and I didn't file it. I want to go back and see what they say about toes that put on recitals. Do you remember what I'm talking about? love jerry
Guest guest
nne, I have had lots of experience with cramping especially in my feet. I started taking a calcium supplement and supplements for magnesium and potassium plus I try to drink more water when I get cramps and now I rarely have them anymore. I hope they stop, you don't notice that little toe until it decides to have a mind of it's own, than it becomes very important. Guest guest
nne, I too have had the cramps you are speaking of, only in my hands. Since I have always been low on potassium, though, and my doctors have taken me all my vitamins, I just put it down to a low potassium level, and started eating at least two bananas a day. Sometimes though, when they get so bad I can't even fold clothes without physically pulling my fingers apart, and massaging my hands between articles of clothing, I break down and take the potassium. I have only had to resort to that when I have failed to eat the bananas. I also understand that spinach is a good source of potassium. Not too many people like spinach, but I do. It's just easier for me to eat the bananas as a snack. I also concoct a fruit salad that contains plenty of bananas, that serves as my dessert on most nights. Give that a try and see if you don't see a difference. Hope this helps. Allida
Guest guest
Thanks for the tips, Ruth. I've been taking a calcium supplement for some time, guess I should start with a potassium one, too. I also try to drink lots of water. nne Re: [ ] Cramps > nne, > I have had lots of experience with cramping > especially in my feet. Guest guest
Have you guys had your potassium level checked. Low potassium can cause wicked cramps. I have to take Potassium CL 10 meq per day to keep my potassium in the normal range. Even with that, sometimes it is below normal - once low enough to keep me in the hospital overnight with massive doses of potassium to get it back up. Guest guest
nne, I also have had that happen...not only toes but sometimes with the fingers too...hubby thought I was doing an awesome Quasimodo impersonation one night...lol. I thought for awhile it might be related to the 6mp...started the first time right about a month after I started. My dosage was increased for the second time about 3 months ago...and these joint..spasms...whatever you might call them...have kicked back in again. In addition, this time also getting muscles twitches all over the place...no rhyme or reason to those either. I have noticed, however, that these things seem to get worse as joint pain worsens. Doctors have had no explanation thus far. Wish I could offer more than " me, too " . (Another) nne > For the past two or three months now, I've been getting pretty bad cramps > in my toes. Guest guest
ruby and gary Good deal! If that proves to fix the problem the next step would be to figure out why that happened in the first place and take measures to prevent it happening again. Chronic electrolyte imbalance can cause serious problems and if no predictable cause can be identified it could indicate kidney problems. It might be a good idea for to talk to his doctor if he doesnt intend to take the quinate as prescribed because I doubt it was prescribed for malaria. Guest guest
Sometimes a dip in potassium levels can cause cramping Tracey. Most veggies have plenty of potassium in the peel – like potatoes. Or try to eat a banana every day for a few days, they are loaded with potassium. Guest guest
Yolanda, I am not sure which of your meds are causing you pain or the other symptoms, but if you are proven to have low Potassium you should be taking a larger dose than you CAN eat. I was taking diuretics, which does seriously deplete one's Potassium. The doctor prescribed capsuleds, (I forget how many mgs). But she said, I'd have to eat 100 bananas to even get close to the concentration in the capsule. I took that for years and my Potassium level just barely stayed in the normal zone. I now take Spirolactone for my leg puffiness and I do not take the extra Potassium , rather now I have to watch my Potassium intake!! Life is crazy! Clara OR I ate everything with mass quantities of potassium. Dehydrated cranberries? > Yolanda > >
Guest guest
Sometimes also magnesium can help with cramps. My mother had serious cramps in her legs, especially at night, and they have completely disappeared after she started taking magnesium. I used to take it myself before AIH, and some friends swear by it as well. I don't know if it is helpful for the kind of cramps connected with AIH or low potassium levels, though, or whether it would be safe for us to take in the first place. However, it seems that there is a degree of magnesium deficiency in cirrhosis patients at least (see for example http://tinyurl.com/tm5pn ), so maybe it has something to do with the cramps as well. But, as always, a doctor should be consulted before trying. Guest guest
I had cramps begin about a year after I started Gleevec and they continued until this year. I had to have transfusions for 6 months, Nov. 2006 thru May 2007. Then I was on a Gleevec vacation for 11 months while trying to recover from Iron Deficent Anemia. When the Phillies showed up in my PCR I went back on Gleevec until the end of June 2008 and had to have a transfusion and then started Procrit (EPO) and am again on Gleevec vacation. I have not had any cramps since the end of July and all my Iron Deficent Anemia and low RBC are reaching levels that I have not seen since before I was Diagnosed. Thursday I will get the results of my 3 month Q-PCR to see if I stay on vacation or return to Gleevec or some other newer drug. I have about another month and my HEM should reach 11 or better and they will stop the Procrit until the levels fall under 9, The ONC monitering my Procrit read me the book on the problems from patients that continued use as your counts reach 12 (low normal or above). Both my ONC's agree that I will stay on Gleevec vacation as long as I remain undetectable. Personally, I would prefer to stay on Gleevec as I have learned to live with the few side effects I have endured since the 1st anniversery. The cramps have been the most annoying and. I now know that the cramps are definitely caused by not having enough red blood cells to carry the oxigen needed. Yes, I can blame Gleevec as the major factor but it has done the job of keeping my CML under control and I need to worry about managing the side effects. Guest guest
Yes..... I find that all my muscles are tense when taking the drug, especially my neck and upper back. Sometime my chest as well. Chiropractic, massage and accupuncture all helps along with yoga. A banana every other day has helped too. Good luck! Guest guest
Maggie, Try drinking electrolyte water at Trader's Joe. This will help the cramps. Also, I have found that when I awaken in the morning, to stretch. Sometimes the cramps were from too much white gluten, like bread, or what ever contained glutens. If you like bananas eat them upon your cramps, they reduce the cramps quickly! Exercise reduces leg cramps, and body cramps in general! I even get them in my face muscles and neck. Others must think I have Tourette's! I take extra potassium, or sometimes drink orange juice immediately, also calcium and magnesium helps. Any ideas about supplements? A little Tonic water helps if it has a small amount of quinine.Appreciate your suggestions.
