TerryLynne, your lab is elderly in dog

years. Have you had his/her teeth checked? When they get older dogs often get

tooth abscesses, which makes them progressively sick. A good cleaning and

possibly a few extractions might be what lengthens her/his life a bit longer.

Just a thought, hope she/her feels better.

Random responses, Feeding pets, dogs, cats

Thanks

for your responses. I still feel as though I don't know what to

do. It is hard for me to buy rabbits, etcetera to feed my dogs, because

I like rabbits. And the range-fed food at places like Wild Oats is

outrageously priced, 6 and 7 bucks a pound.

I am kind of thinking of trying a 50/50 diet, half meat, half

vegetables.

I am familiar with the argument that their mouth proves what they should

eat, and I don't totally discount it, but they will dig up their own

carrots, etcetera, and enjoy eating them, so I think that they show a

tendency to want/enjoy vegetables.

I appreciate the responses, and the link Suzi sent. But as I look at

that site, they talk about feeding dogs yeast products, and I start

wondering if dogs get candida, and if these yeast products are of any

benefit. I also worry about their use of dairy and cereals. Sigh.

I used to have Markie on Ayms, but I decided that it wasn't a good

choice. I then switched her to a brand, the name of which I have

forgotten, which was cooked at a lot lower temperature and for a shorter

period of time, and was supposed to be made of organic ingredients. Then

I switched her to Canidae, I think that's the right spelling, which is

an all meat, no veggies food. You know, carnivores, and all that. But I

am worrying about that, now, because they aren't getting any veggies.

I have been reading a couple of raw animal food lists for a year or so,

but I really haven't learned anything that helps me to make the switch.

I did meet a man who switched his two older dogs to a BARF diet, and he

couldn't say enough good stuff about the improvement in their physical

well-being.

Well, I guess I have run down.

Terri, You take what you can use from the links and everyone... and make the choice that seems right for your companion. Raw meat and veggies and some bones that she can gnaw on.. My dogs love the big bones with some meat left on them.. See how it goes.. Have any of the vets, etc figured out what is wrong - did she have a stroke previously or hip problems or what... that would also be beneficial for helping her.
