Guest guest
Hi, folks. I'm back with another question, because my DIL told me today my breastfed 6-weeks-old grandbaby (with the colic) hasn't had a BM in 4 days. I suggested my DIL take some Natural Calm, but does anyone have any other suggestions?Anything she can give the baby directly? (I think there was a thread about this recently, but I deleted without really reading, as it wasn't relevant for me at the time . . .) Thanks in advance! --Lalita
Guest guest
At about the same age my son also used to have one large BM every 3 to 7 days and his doctor told me that that was normal for breastfed babies. I don't know how accurate that is but I had heard it from lactation nurses as well. My son normally was happier child after the BM but never had colic. Many belive that colic is caused by stomache cramps. Haleh --- Lalita Karst <lalita@...> wrote: > Hi, folks. Guest guest
Breast fed babies should go almost after each feeding, or at least a few times a day. If nothing else I can't understand why when doctor's hear of newborns not going every day as something alarming with the digestion system. Please have the mom and the baby try a probiotic. My neighbor just went through this. She noticed a big difference when she started taking just one regular Nature's Way acidolophilus. Then turns out her and the baby had thrust, so they were put on nystatin. Gee, wonder if there is a yeast issue????....Also she found some relief giving the baby the herb form or oil form of cat nip. Something she just syringed into the baby's mouth. But I'd bet money on things getting better with probioitcs. Also of note was that she was on antibiotics when the baby was born, as I was too and my daughter battles yeast big time. Of course they say no problem doing so, but it does make sense that it would disrupt the delicate system. Any chance your DIL was on antibiotics? Just another theory. Good luck, Kari Re: infant constipation Hi, folks. I'm back with another question, because my DIL told me today my breastfed 6-weeks-old grandbaby (with the colic) hasn't had a BM in 4 days. Guest guest
This can indeed be very normal. My daughter used to go a week or more while I was breastfeeding without a BM and this was completely fine. Guest guest
Well, I've never thought it good to keep the bowel contents in the body for so long myself--your DIL can buy some glycerin infant suppositories, break one in half and insert the narrow tip in the baby's rectum--that can get things moving, especially if it seems to be making the baby uncomfortable. I'd second having her take some type of probiotic--it certainly will never hurt, and it can help. mom of 6 breastfed children who pretty much pooped regularly unless there was a problem. You can recommend the nursing mother to remove milk from her diet, or use enzymes, and see if things improve. Dana
Guest guest
Listees, What would your recommend for a nine-month old boy, just under 18 pounds, in every way quite healthy and active, but constipated (very hard, pebbly, small stools at best once or twice per week). I just started treatment today adjusting his low back and pelvis (in particular) and instructed the mother in tummy massage, repeated flexing of the hips on the abdomen while the boy lies supine, and warm tummy compresses (sometimes rather difficult with a squirming, active child). Of course we talked diet as the boy is formula fed (Similac) as I recommended increasing water intake and water containing fiber foods (vegetables, fruits, legumes, etc.). Someone in past posts recommended a fruit-based paste developed by a family member that could be quite helpful. Any thoughts or suggestions. Minga, was it you that recently recommended info by Farlow, DC? Does she have an info source? Thanks folks... J. Holzapfel, D.C. Albany, OR. kjholzdc@... Guest guest
I would give him droppers of aloe vera juice. If it is juice flavored he will like it. Can be given a couple times a day. This is also great for colic. Guest guest
Hi , Gillhams Natural Vitality carries a product called " baby calm " - it is magnesium citrate. I have used this product with good success at a dosage of 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon mixed with moms milk. Obviously stay away from the bananas too! Hope this helps. Caleb J. Craig, D.C. Guest guest
Herbal baby constipation remedy Used equal parts of fennel seed (Foeniculum officinale) and licorice root (Glycyrrhiza spp. Use cut and sifted, or c/s). Simmer for 20 minutes, cool, and give 1 teaspoon every 30 minutes, as needed. I will usually boil up a pint of water and use a couple tablespoons of each herb. I will then keep the strained herbal decoction in the fridge for a couple days if I still need it. I keep a little dropper bottle of the remedy to carry around the house with me. I will just squirt a dropper full in the mouth in place of the teaspoon measurement. I use dropper bottles I clean out from purchased or home made herbal tinctures. Also, make sure your baby is getting enough fluids. Review the diet as well. Gentle abdominal massage is helpful too By Kim Gallagaher Suzi What is a weed?
