Has anyone had the gastric bypass?

I'm more interested in it, and wonder how folks feel about it.

I am Interstitial Cystitis (IC), it is a permanent diease of the

bladder and the lining dissolves. I'm on medication to give me a fauz

bladder.

But basically, I've quit smoking and I'm gaining about 5 lbs a week.

I wasn't skinny before, but also I can't eat any diet products because

the stuff they have in them is bad for the bladder, I can only have 2

fruits blueberries and pears. Two types of nut almonds and cashews.

No alchol, no salad dressing ( and who is going to eat a salad

without dressing) nothing citrus or acidic at all and many preservatives.

I can eat meat, and most vegtables so the likihood of me being able to

get on a diet and stick to it would have me going around hungry all

the time.

When I quit smoking 11 years ago, my weight went up to 220 pounds, I

started back smoking and lost it all back down to 140. I can't go

back to smoking this time. So I need some help would appreciate

anyone helping me to understand how all of this happens and feels

afterwards. Thanks

Hi ,

Though most of us have had the lapband, you seem to know what will

work for you in the long run. Both surgeries are productive in

losing the weight, every weightloss surgery has it's pro's and con's

about it. Only the individual can determine what is right for them,

do your research and be prepared for a lifelong change. Having it by

Dr. Aceves you are choosing a good team of doctors to take care of

you. Keep us up to date.

Hi , So you are 220lbs now? If so I would highly recommend the Band! I'm gonna tell you, it's so much safer than g-by-pass and with your size you willl drop that x-tra 80lbs in no time!! I started at 200lbs on 2-1-06 and have been at 140 since Sept!! My best friend was 235 had surgery the same day as me and is now 174lbs!! Honestly, we all want the weight off (even the XXXL ladies/men can tell you how well this works) but not the high-risks that bypass has, and even years after surgery..complications arise, as well as death from twisted/ruptured bowels, stroke, heart-attack, you name it!! And I knew of two lovely ladies, one in here 20's & one 32(with 2 babies) that died 1yr (leak) and 2yrs(blood clot) after bypass!!! "dying to be thin" it was so sad!! Another lady died of malnutrition..I don't know and haven't heard of any bandsters that have died during surgery, or yrs after. Although there may be. It's still risky..any surgery is but

it's nice to know if a problem arises I can have it removed and still be intact internally :-) The band is not "easy" nor is "bypass" but in the end 1-2yrs out from both the weight loss is EQUAL!! The choice is yours of course. I love life and love being around for my family, the band helped me get here and I don't have to worry about how long I'll be here! (unless of course I get hit by a bus or something ! :-)heehee... Good luck on whatever you decide, think long and hard, listen to your families concerns and choose whats best for you! Dana

Hi & Tina, On that site you will also find a "Memorial" page under the people link, that list all the members that have died from gastric bypass recently and in the past, that was all I needed to read to know it wasn't for me! Some of the story's were "heart wrenching" and I couldn't help but cry for people I had never even meet. There are Lap-band patient testimonials on this site as well. (Just in-case you change your mind :-) What made your decision lean towards G-bypass and not the band? Just curious..If I ever had to have bypass tho...Dr.Aceves would be the one I choose, that's for sure!! Good luck on your Journey!! Dana

I will be 65 next week and had my sleeve two weeks ago today. Who is anybody

else to tell you that you should be forced to live overweight for the next 20 -

25 years? (the women in my family live a long time) Or do they want you to risk

dying earlier than that from obesity related issues?

I brought my old, before, photos from many years ago to inspire me. Dr. Aceves

loved the spunk of the idea. HE didn't think I was too old. Age is a number.

Attitude is all that counts.

Tell them to bug off and do what you want. I do want to encourage you to

seriously investigate the Sleeve. It is much less invasive and life altering,

but if you follow the program you will lose what you need.

Good luck.

of problems with getting any nutrition from her food. I understand that Bypass

is better now. The sleeve just seemed like the perfect answer to what I was

looking for and I have lost 75 pounds in 7 months, so I am very happy with it.

My doctor said I haven't been this healthy in many years. For me it was about

being in good health first and losing the weight 2nd.

I'm with you! I had my sleeve surgery in Jan. and I am 66, soon to be 67. I've gone from size 16 to size 10 and even the 10's are too loose now. My son said I'm a "hottie". lol. My granddaughters (3 teens) love taking me shopping. Yesterday I got the cutest sundress at Forever 21 and a blouse at Wet Seal......never thought that would happen!
