Guest guest
Hello Jan: I have thought of you so often over the last few weeks. I am glad to hear you are doing better. Would you consider posting your experience when you feel better? Are you going back to work soon? I am sorry, I just can't remember, did you have a lap Heller? Open? or other. There have been so many posts and new people that I am a bit overwhelmed. Forgive this old ladies memory. Anyway Jan, I am truly glad that you are doing well. Keep us updated. Guest guest
Hi, Judy! welcome! If you're hungry , eat!! This first 6 weeks is for healing and you need good nurtition to do so. Women need 50-60 grams of protein daily (on average). Being too low CAN lead to extra hunger and cravings. Your band is really not working until you get to a good fill level, so most of us were hungry about this time. Choose lower-cal foods and snacks, and just do the best you can. Banding is not about misery and deprivation. Just don't eat too close to bedtime (within 2 hrs) as this will encourage reflux, both now and later. I found i did best if I had 3 decent meals a day, and planned healthy snacks in the middle of the afternoon and about 8 pm. I call this " preventative eating " . I ate something healthy to avoid getting so hungry I grabbed whatever I could find. Good snacks might be a hardboiled agg, a piece of string cheese, a small bowl of fiber cereal, 1-2 rice cakes, a cup of Dannon Light N'Fit yogurt (only 60 cal). Where are u in Ohio? I was born and raised in Toledo... I am wondering if it is because I may not be getting enough protein. I had a 10 cc band put in, this is what my surgeon is now using, I am not able to have a fill until at least 8 weeks post op. I just hope I can keep fighting this evening hunger. > > Judy from Ohio

Guest guest
have a little low fat cottage cheese or some other kind of cheese. Low fat for the calories but the protein will help with the hunger. I love cheese for a snack tho. Guest guest
Judy, the band really doesn't start working well until after you get to a good fill level several months from now. Until then, you can exprience normal hunger and be able to eat as much as before. Do your best to choose only good band foods, limit your calories, and get som,e good daily exercise, and you can still lose a bit even before you get to that good fill. The cottage cheese suggestion was a good one if you choose nonfat cottage cheese. Other good protein is soft white fish, tuna with nonfat mayo or nonfatMiracle Whip, nonfat yogurt like the Dannon Lite N'Fit (only 60 calories). Banster women need 50-60 grams a day of solid protein (avoid all protein drinks, as the band does not work with liquids) and this is pretty easy to get with good food choices. This will all be much easier when you get a good fill - until then, do the best you can, and start incorporating the band rulkes and guidelines into your life. Keep the faith! Guest guest
Judy - Been there, done that as they say. I'm now 3 months post op. Started at 282 and now at 245. The first several weeks I dealt with the same evening cravings and thought the same things you are expressing now. Just this past week I had my 3rd fill. They did a fluid test and I was only at 5.5 fill so they put my fill up to 7cc and now I am feeling like I am at that sweet spot. The kicker for me was that I started working out 6 weeks ago with a personal trainer. This means that 2-3 times a week I get a good cardio workout and strength training. I also walk on the treadmill 5 miles a week now. In that 6 weeks I have dropped 12 lbs and lost 10 inches off my hips! I swear that is the truth! I had measured my hips at home also prior to starting and I was shocked. I've dropped 2 sizes since the band. It's tough to see down the road from where you are, but don't give up. Add in exercise as it elevates the mood as well. Good Luck! Re: 3 weeks post op Judy, the band really doesn't start working well until after you get to a good fill level several months from now. Guest guest
I was banded Jan 17 this year and went to my first support group last mo. My Dr. suggested that people do the advantage protein shakes and said that is a good breakfast on the go and because of the high protein in it, it will tend to " stick by " you more than carnation instant breakfast or the slim fasts. Guest guest
I'm afraid This sounds like a bypass surgeon! Protein drinks are not a great idea at all, once we are back to soft foods. this is for a number of reasons very well-proven. They are exactly the type of " liquid calories " we need to avoid. Inamed states this in theior patient manual, and I fully believe them. The manual was made largely written by Dr dixon in australia, who is a world-renowned Band pioneer. the first reason is that all liquids run right through the band and do not keep you full. they do not expand the pouch to turn on the nerves that tell your brain that you're full. They do not stay in the pouch to KEEP you full, so you're hungry again in a short time and tempted to eat between meals. secondly, they are usually higher cal that solid foods. A breakfast of cereal and milk is aobut 150 calories. Many of the protein drinks are more than 200. calories add up fast. You can easily get the protein you need (50-60 grams a day, on average, for women) in the other 2 meals a day and maybe a small protein snack. another reason is that it is al;most impossible to get the 25 mg of daily fiber we need without a good fiber cereal in the morning, and crackers later. Fiber supplements to meet this daily need are expensive, and also do not make the band work as solid fiber does. Eating fiber is important to the band loss, since it fills you for no calories. Fiber is also essential for bowel health - and i don't mean just regularity, but prevention of bowel cancer and other diseases. and, lastly (and MOST importantly), since liquids run right through, they do not bump up your metabolism for a couple hours as eating solids and then working to digest them does. This part alone accounts for about 5-10 pounds a year not lost if you have only one liquid meal a day instead of a solid meal. Your doc has not considered any of these effects or studies, I'm afraid. There are very few docs, sadly, that are trained in nurtition, especially BAND nutrition. But, certainly, we can do whatever we feel is best! Our success is largely up to our own choices. Guest guest
Hello all, I haven't posted in a few weeks but I thought it was time since I have a question. I am happy to report I am down 22 lbs and overall I feel great. I can't believe my MGB was only 3 weeks ago. I did have a rough start the first week, I unfortunately didn't have all peaches and cream like some people report right after MGB but it's all good now. I would like some feedback though. I wake up each morning feeling completely nauseated and have a stomach ache. I can't even smell food or think of eating or drinking anything. By mid day it's gone and I seem to feel better once I eat something. Did anybody else experience this? What did you do? Let me also tell you that I have never been a morning eater. I don't know if that is a factor or not but I thought I would through it out there. I also have been getting a head ache almost daily, but this could be because I am nauseated and not eating in the morning? What are your thoughts? Thanks Cathi
Guest guest
I am not a big morning eater either. The headaches can be caused by dehydration so even if you do not eat in the morning, you should be drinking. Drink all you can stand in the evening before bedtime so you are hydrated for the night then start drinking in the morning. Popsicles are a good way to get liquids and were especially soothing to my tummy when it was nauseous. Hope this helps. Elinor R.
