I think the teddy bear would be just fine. I agree that having him in your

bed for a few nights is a very good idea. The bear will have your scent and

will be a familiar item from sleeping with you to transfer to his own bed.

As far as the Ferber method goes, I like the techniques used in this method.

I would not go so far as to say that I agree with everything about it. As

with any method you should take the good and leave the bad. That is to say -

use what you are comfortable with and ditch the rest. We do let cry it

out on occassion and it has worked very well for us. When she cries in the

night we go into her room and make sure she is ok - we don't talk to her or

turn on any lights. I sometimes rub her back, but I do not pick her up. Once

we have determined that she is fine then we let her cry until she falls back

asleep. It usually only takes a few minutes. If she is really worked up we go

back in at appropriate intervals and rub her back or stroke her head -

sometimes we whisper to her, but we never talk out loud and we don't pick her

up. If she is ill, of course that is a totally different situation. At this

point we can tell the difference between the " I'm mad " cry and the " I'm not

feeling well " cry just as I'm sure you can.

Hope this helps. We found a comfort item to be VERY helpful. We couldn't put

her to bed at night without " Pooh-bee " (a Winnie-the-Pooh blanket/stuffed toy

thing). Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Hi

First of all can I ask what the FERBER sleep method is? Do I not know this

because I live down under (so to speak)??

As for trying to break the bad habit of coming into your bed when he

cries, I would give him his favourite teddy bear - at 14 mths I wouldn't

worry an awful lot about the eyes if he doesn't try to chew on them when he

is awake. Maybe all he needs is a little security - maybe you could try

sleeping with the teddy in your bed for a few nights - I know this sounds

strange but then the teddy may take on some of your scent and this might

help him feel more secure babies and toddlers love to snuggle into mums and

dads - they just love the smell of us. I would however try to break your

habit as soon as possible as the older they get the more difficult it gets.

If he is still in his crib then at least he can't get out to come to you.

All the best

I have a bedtime Q for everyone,

We have developed a bad habit of moving our little guy to our bed when he cries in the night. Looks like we are going to have to do the Ferber sleep method.

I want to give him a comfort toy first.

Q: his favourite teddy bear has the glass eyes (very well sown in, though). Can I leave this bear in his crib now? He is 14 mos. Is there still a worry that he will choke on the eyes at this age?

Thanks for the help, and wish us luck.

nna,

Thanks for the advice.

"Ferber" is a doctor who wrote a book about how to teach your baby to fall back asleep by himself when he wakes up in the night. You have to go in and comfort him but are not supposed to pick him up. You have to let him cry. Apparently it is very difficult but very successful, and within 5 or 7 days he will learn to go back to sleep by himself. I am working up my courage to do this.
