Guest guest
I had my MGB with Dr. Peraglie on 12/6/07, and I wanted to give everyone a six-week update. My pre-op weight was 324, and my weight today is 282, so I am down 42 lbs. I have had type II diabetes for about 4 years, and took my last medication the night before surgery, 12/5/07. Beginning the day following surgery, I have taking my blood sugar readings twice per day, and they have been running from 84 to 112--this morning it was 99. Dibetes is one of the worst conditions a person can have, because it affects your whole body, and body chemistry. My father had suffered with the effects of diabetes for 15 years, and one of the side-effects (nephritis) is what eventually killed him. Diabetes was one of the main reasons I decided to have the MGB, and it appears to be gone. My PCP and Dr. P had told me that they expected me to be cured from diabetes following surgery, and they apparently were both right. I have also had hytertension for 10 years, and treated it successfully with medication. While my blood pressure has been doing better, I am still taking my BP medications, but will probably reduce the dosages when I see my PCP next week. I am pleased to say that over the past six weeks, I have had no problems, other than dumping twice (due to eating just a little more than I should have). Dumping is no fun at all, so I now stop eating before I start to feel full, and have had no more problems. I am able to eat most types of food, except that rice and bread tend to fill me up immediately, so I avoid those. I had my first beef last night since surgery and had no problems with it, although I made sure to chew it thoroughly before swallowing. My meals consist mainly of soups, chicken, fish, eggs, salads and of course yogurt, which I really like. I really do not ever really feel hungry, and it take relatively little to satisfy me at meals. The main snacks that have between meals are sugar-free popcycles, pudding cups, and apple sauce. I really don't like regular Gatorade, but luckily Gatorade G2 is available, and tastes much better with much less calories but the same electrolytes. I have not had any tea, coffee or carbonated drinks since surgery, and have not really wanted them. When friends are drinking coffee, I drink hot chocolate, which I enjoy. Having lost about 30% of my weight-loss goal in six weeks, I am feeling great, have much more energy, and people are beginning to notice the weight-loss. Overall, this has been a great decision for me, and only regret not having done this years ago. I am happy to act as a contact for people considering the MGB--please email me at wb5705@....
