Guest guest
Hi Pam, I don't know if you are aware of the AGBell association of the Deaf, but their goal is oral education. I'm a member of the Ohio chapter, as well as the national organization. Last Saturday, we went to grocery stores to hand out information on Newborn Hearing Screening. Found several people who had children or grandchildren with hearing loss, and who knew nothing about where to go for help. Just said they couldn't afford hearing aids. I told them who will pay for hearing aids for children, and who will pay for adults in the right situation. So it was well worth while getting the word out. But, indeed, the sooner a person is implanted after diagnosis, the better. Thanks for saying it so well. The Original From: " coronacrone " coronacrone@... A couple of people pointed out a typo (2000) and the fact that I needed to update the name of SHHH. I really appreciated the comments and have already made the corrections! For anyone who wrote and asked to see it and who did not get a copy please let me know. I sent out 5 copies. Hopefully they all went through without a hitch. Here's to language and communication for deaf/Deaf children, the earlier the better; wherever and however they may find it! :-) If a CI is their road to understanding then I'm all for it but if Sign is their best way to communicatively join the world then I'm all for that as well. Maybe like many here they will decide to get a CI later. Communicatively, all children need the best and the most as early as possible. Unless there are extraordinary circumstances (a house full of expert deaf signers who are aware of all that child's developing brain needs cognitively, socially and emotionally) I believe a deaf child born to hearing parents will do far better with an early CI than with waiting to learn both sign and their native oral language. We have to keep in mind " the window of opportunity " for learning language and get at it as early as possible. Appreciatively to all, Pam (in Alaska)
Guest guest
That is a wonderful sounding organization, especially that they focus on oral education. Kudos to them.
