Guest guest
Hi Gayle, Hopefully Beth or another list member will correct me if I'm wrong, but the term postlingual means a child or adult lost their hearing after the time of speech and language acquisition. (age 3 or later) I was diagnosed with mild hearing loss at age 3, but didn't wear hearing aids until age 15 for a moderately-severe loss. Doctors recommended hearing aids and ear surgery at age 3, but since my parents' health insurance would not cover this cost (for reasons I do not know), I didn't receive my first pair of hearing aids until 12 years later. Since newborns were not given hearing screenings in the late 60's/early 70's, the audiologists I've worked with in the past think my hearing loss may be congenital. At any rate, I consider myself lucky that my loss was only mild -- especially in lieu of blindness.
