Amazing! Congratulations!! sometimes taking that first step towards trying something new is the hardest part. Cheers, Silly MI In , " Ted F. Guest guest
Hello , thanks. Not in my wildest dreams would I have thought I could come this far, so quickly. I had purposely avoided the phone until now, 12 weeks after activation, because I knew that my map was changing all the time in these early weeks and I didnt want my first real phone experience in many, many years to be a disappointment. I DID try ringing the same son a week after activation and I was disappointed, because I didnt seem to be much better than before the op, so thats when I decided to wait until I felt I would be much better. I know that my comprehension is good now, so this seemed like the right time and it just happened to be his birthday :-). My experience neednt stop anyone else from trying to use the phone at an earlier time. But in my case I am glad I have concentrated on speech first, because thats what the C.I. is intended for, before I attempted to use the phone, which is still a foreign communication medium to me. To be able to talk and hear on an unassisted phone was a bonus. I'll try the telecoil the next time. What I didnt mention in my previous note, was that I started the call using ADRO and then after a few minutes I switched to the Whisper setting and that sounded clearer still?? Music next. I can already hear the music in the ads and the programmes on TV and it sounds like music should sound. I watched a DVD with music in it and that sounded great, but at this stage, not all music CD's sound " normal " to me. But I know enough to know that we are going in the right direction. Guest guest
That's fantastic Ted - I'm very happy for you. It must have been special for your son also. I am glad also that you are starting to appreciate music again. I tried using the phone too with my husband and while I couldn't understand what he said I could hear his voice so maybe in 6 months time I might get somewhere. I am almost 3 weeks post activation but since I was born deaf and always struggled with the phone even with aids I am expecting a longer time frame. Has your tinnitus improved too? I still get a fair bit of tinnitus which I am a bit disappointed about but am hearing well otherwise. Conversations are no longer the struggle that they once were and my energy level has gone back up. Guest guest
It would have been even more special to him, if he had seen that I was using the phone as an ordinary phone. Havent been able to do that for 25 years or more. I always had to use the speakerphone function for the louder sound. If you have got phones in different rooms, try talking between them to someone, its good practise. I posted here a few weeks ago about having a nightmare day and night, where I was getting sounds like someone banging on a drum, at the rate of more than once a second. It must have been a last hurragh, because when I woke up next morning, it had gone?? I still get tinnitus a little bit in the other ear, but nowhere as bad as I had it in the implanted one since the op. Yours might abate too, in a few weeks. I replied to this last night, but my ISP went off the air, not sure if it got posted, or not. That three weeks of yours seems to have gone quickly. I hope the service you get from the Mater in Sydney is as good as what I get from the Mater in Brisbane.
