New Legislation (S.6693 Maziarz/A.10458 Gianaris)

Consumer Freedom to Choose Natural Practices

The New York Natural & Complementary Practices Project, Inc. (NYNCPP) is working to protect the right of every New Yorker to freely choose among natural and complementary practices. Natural and complementary practices are arts, trades and education that may be utilized to enhance one°Øs well being or quality of life.

To accomplish this, we support new legislation, S.6693 Maziarz/A.10458 Gianaris, which will make natural and complementary practices legal and accessible to all of us. This legislation will allow practitioners who register with the Department of State to provide natural, holistic, complementary care. The bill will protect practitioners from prosecution as unlicensed providers under the State Education Law and broaden the public°Øs access to low cost natural and preventive disciplines. See Law on this website to read the bills.

S.6693/A.10458 is in the Consumer Protection Committee in the Senate and the Economic Development Committee in the Assembly. The first step in passing this legislation into law is for a majority of legislators to vote to °?report°± it from these committees.

We must act now to get legislators in Albany to pass S.6639/A.10458. Here°Øs what practitioners and consumers of natural and complementary practices can do to help get this legislation passed into law:

CALL your State representatives in the Senate and Assembly and tell them why you support S.6639/A.10458. [The names and contacts for your representatives are at the very bottom of this and every NewsFlash from NYNCPP. If they are not here, go to Update your Information on the website and add your address so that these names will appear in future NewsFlashes. To find your representatives today, call the League of Women Voters at 212-725-3541, or go to Find Your Legislator on the website to find your legislator.]

CALL the members of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee and the Assembly Economic Development Committee and ask them to vote for S.6693/A.10458. The names and contacts of these committee members are listed toward the end of this News Flash.

WRITE your State representatives in the Senate and Assembly. Write a letter, in your own words, to tell legislators why this legislation is important to you. Avoid using form letters because they are less effective than personal, individualized correspondence.

WRITE to members of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee and the Assembly Economic Development Committee and ask them to vote for S.6693/A.10458. Again, no form letters please.

THE MESSAGE

When you speak and write to legislators, emphasize the following:

Å6¶1 S.6693/A.10458 respects the right of every individual to choose from a broad array of natural and complementary practices.

Å6¶1 Recent studies have shown that millions of New Yorkers are presently receiving a substantial amount of services from natural and complementary practitioners.

Å6¶1 Consumers will continue to make decisions to access natural and complementary practices, despite out-of-date licensing laws that discourage the provision of such care.

Å6¶1 S.6693/A.10458 creates public policy that is consistent with 21st century knowledge and practices about natural healing arts. Consumers will be secure in the knowledge that their chosen providers will be free from unreasonable investigation, prosecution, or closure by the state of New York.

Å6¶1 S.6693/A.10458 will provide consumers with information about natural and complementary care before entering a course of treatment.

Å6¶1 S.6603/A.10458 is similar to legislation passed in other states, including Minnesota, Rhode Island, and California.
