Guest guest
Hi! , Thanks a lot for the email. I feel better now. He is certainly making a lot of noises which he didn't while waiting for the switch-on. I guess some therapy will help him to get back to school soon. Cheers Jeedu Jeedu Hi Jeedu, Thanks for contacting the forum. Your son's electrodes could be in slightly different positions than they were with the N24C, so that could make the map sound different - " strange " in his opinion. Also, a first mapping is usually very conservative, so his full dynamic range has probably not been reached. AND he's only on his 2nd day with the map. If he thinks back, he might remember that for a week or so after a new mapping things sound strange anyway. I'm sure all will be fine, further mappings will happen. He didn't get his hearing all at once with the N24C either. So time and patience. That he is hearing at all is a great sign. Hang in there, Hi! All My son Hussein Noordeen who is 15 now was implanted with a N24 when he was 7 yrs old. Last December while playing he knocked his head and had to be explanted and re-implanted with the new freedom. He was switched on 2 days ago and says that the sounds are very different. I would like to know whether anyone in this group has had such an experience and if so how long did it take to get use to the new implant and the sounds He has an the initial map with all electrodes functioning. Would he need speech therapy to get use to the new sounds Your imput will be greatly appreaciated We live in sri lanka where there is hardly any help for a person or family with an implant Thanks Jeedu
Guest guest
Hi Jeedu, I've forwarded your message to a professor of AV therapy, who is now affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic here in town. I included your e mail address, so he may be in touch with you directly. Hope he has some answers. Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2006 09:04:38 +0600 From: " Jeedu Noordeen " <jeedu@...> Subject: AV Therapist Hi! All I have posted on this circle about my son Hussein Noordeen a couple of times. Way back in 1997 when he was first implanted and recently when his implant failed and he was reimplanted. For those of you who cannot remember me we live in Sri Lanka (Asia) where cochlear implants have just been introduced last year. The speech pathologists have just heard about AV therapy and recently Warren Estabrook visited with a cochlear team and did a workshop here. We have got very young and keen speech pathologists who want to train in AV therapy. The Fullbright Scholarship program has promised the University of Kelaniya that they could provide funding for a AV therapist if the university can find one. The criteria is the therapist is. a) Has to be a citizen of USA The therapist should be connected to a university in USA I had my son implanted in Sydney and stayed in the program to rehabilitate him for one year. Many of the families here cannot even afford hearing aids. I have promised the lady in charge of the university program that I would do everything I can to help her get down an AV therapist. I would really appreciate it if any of you know an AV therapist who would like to come over to Sri Lanka for at least a month to introduce AV therapy to the speech pathologists here. Looking forward to a positive response. Jeedu Noordeen Mother of Hussein Noordeen N24 1997 Freedom 2006-03-
