Guest guest
There was a study done on moldy washing machines. It might be in the old messages. The mold is in areas that the bleach and soap don't reach so the the machine must be disassembled for decontamination. However. This is a big however. The worst source of clothing contamination from doing laundry in a moldy area appears to be the dryer. The dryer runs large quantities of air through your clothing, which is now serving as a filter for spores. The heat doesn't matter - the spores are toxic live or dead. Major Mold Commandment: Thou Shalt not do laundry in a spore plume. Thine garments will drivest thou nuts. - the Stachysterian

Perhaps the best policy is air drying outside ( not too practical in the Rockies in winter, though..) The heat from a dryer is insignificant relative to what you need to " Kill " (denature? sterilize? render unreproductive?) anyway. Won't Stachy spores survive 500 degrees for over an hour? Geez, paper burns at 451... It is the toxins, however.

Guest guest
Thanks for all the tips. I had already come to a similar conclusion about the clothes dryer, and thankfully I never use it, thanks to the Australian weather. Yes I think unfortunately that It might be time for a new washing machine, all my efforts at decontaminating it so far have proved unfruitful. .
