Guest guest
Hi Patsy, I think Mike explained it yesterday. And did a great job. Why didn't I cut and Paste? LOL. All 3 are mapping strategies, or how your Freedom will be customized for you. SPEAK is a roving strategy that stimulates many sites to provide a richly detailed representation of sound. CIS - (Continuous Interleaved Sampling) uses a higher rate of stimulation with a limited number of electrodes. The Bionics HiRes and the Med-el mapping systems are variations of CIS. CIS provides fine detail on the timing of speech. ACE (Advanced Combination Encoders) is unique to Nucleus devices. It combines the best features of SPEAK by using it's roving capabilities and CIS by using it's faster stimulation and pitch resolution. HI-ACE would be an even faster rate of ACE strategy. By roving, I mean the program can pick the best electrodes to stimulate for each sound you get. It is not a fixed strategy where the electrodes are set (fixed) and ONLY those electrodes are stimulated regardless of sound. If you want more details, contact Cochlear www.cochlear.com and ask for a copy of Issues and Answers That's where I got the information quoted above. Since you are just starting out, you really don't need to KNOW all this. Just know that Nucleus has more flexibility and more programming strategies available than any other implant. AND with 4 slots to map, you can try one of each if you want. Most implantees try ACE as a default mapping. So your first map might well be ACE or HI-ACE. Your audiologist can map from there. Some like CIS for music. With all the choices, your audiologist will find the best mapping strategy, AND the best variation of that strategy for you. The Original From: MSBUDDY1951@...
