Guest guest
Just to let you know, there are others out there just like you, doing the yo-yo thing. I am so excited - I LEAVE TOMORROW!!!!! for my sleeve. My BMI is 33 and at the age of 55 I wish I had had the wherewithall and guts to do this years ago. Most of the people who have written me with encouragement and their stories are in the 30-40 BMI range; obese by medical standards, but not fat enough for insurance to pay for us. If you want to do this, go for it. I'll keep you all apprised of my status. Good luck with your decision. Mine is 31 and I have lost and gained weight so many times that at the age of 43 I would prefer to have a different career than weight loss. If I dont restrict my calories greatly I gain. Even though I workout regularly I gain it back then lose then gain.... you get the idea. If anyone has been in my position and has had the sleeve I would love to hear from you. FYI.... I also have a herniated lower disc in my back and 2 parents that are type 2 as well as a father and sister that are obese although sister was banded and is doing GREAT! Made me think why am I struggling so hard with depression and pain? I have 3 small children 5 and under as well as a new grandson and two older daughters. Guest guest
OMG, yes, my BMI is around 18. I'm sure there are others who have lost way below their goal, as I have, but they may not all be members of this board. If your genetic predispostion is to diabetes and obesity, I think that's the reason why you're struggling so much, on top of the stress of having 3 kids under the age of 5. I can't imagine the stress of that situation. Only you can figure out why you ended up with that. Sorry about your back; that's something you'll need to get worked out, but all of the above pretty much describes why you're having the problems with weight loss. I'm sorry, I hope it gets better for you down the road. > > Are there any of you that have had surgery with Dr Aceves that have had a lower BMI? Guest guest
My BMI was 32 and all the doctors I saw wanted to know why I was there. It's ok. The Dr A team doesn't play the head games with you that they play here in the USA. If Dr. A says ok to get surgery, just go do it. 31 is too much BMI anyway....... I have the band and am doing well with it but I would encourage you -- like everyone else here -- to get the sleeve. One thing about the band. It doesn't lose the weight for you. You still have to balance input with output. I still have to eat right and exercise daily. I personally have to exercise fairly strenuously to keep the weight off. I ruined my metabolism doing what you've done so it isn't much help any more. 800 calories is about what I can handle in a day that I move. If I veg out, forget it...... Guest guest
My surgery was done Dec 6th and I had the sleeve done. My bmi was just under 30 but done due to health issues and approval of my doctor in Canada which a letter was sent to Dr. Aceves, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to have the surgery. He felt that my doctor knew me better than the screening process he uses. He prefers to do a minimum of 30 bmi. He is an awesome doctor and so are his colleagues .. > > > From: heckclan <tdheck2@...> > Subject: BMI of 31 > > Date: Wednesday, January 5, 2011, 3:28 PM > > > Â > > > > Are there any of you that have had surgery with Dr Aceves that have had a lower BMI? I guess I feel like I would we be judged even though I also believe my metabolism is shot from all of the yo yoing. I am just mentally exhausted from always concentrating on this issue. UGH!! I am definitely going to try to get this done this year. Good luck to all of the gals going down today. Thanks again everyone! Guest guest
Hi: Yes my BMI 2 month ago was 34.7 and I will be going to surgery next week, because I quit smoking in november my BMI increase to 35 and as all of us I has been in diets for the past 10 years without any stable results and also the doctor told me that I need to lower my weight for my heigh to 140-145 and the lowest that I reached last year was 170 and gained back more so for me BMI of 31 with a past family history of diabetes, hypertension etc and unsuccessfully tried differents diets should think about this surgery. Guest guest
I have a BMI of 30 (fluctuates between 28-32) and I'm scheduled February 14. After years of yoyo dieting and struggling every day, I'm ready for a change. If I look at a cookie, I gain a pound. I exercise a lot, but I'm stuck with weight. My friend had VSG with another doctor when she had a BMI of 29. We used to be the same size. Not anymore. She looks fantastic in her loose size 6. She has had the best time of it. Eats " normally " now. You hardly notice that she eats so much less than the rest of us, but she does carry on great dinner conversation. She has not had any problems at all. I blame my parents. . .it's genetic. My sister had gastric bypass several years ago and I'm the " skinny " one in my family. I've felt worried that I would be judged as " not heavy enough " for surgery, which is true in the states. But, I'm also tired of being an " inspiration " for doing activities that some people think a " big " girl shouldn't be able to do. I can't wait for my date. I hope to recognize pictures of myself again instead of wondering who the girl is wearing my clothes. I want to be comfortable in my skin for the next 42 years. If you haven't had surgery by the time I go, I'll keep you posted. > > Are there any of you that have had surgery with Dr Aceves that have had a lower BMI? Guest guest
Yes I had a BMI of I think 29 (can't remember). I am 5'4" and weighed in at Dr. Aceves at 172 (at home I weighed 180). I was "squeezing" into a size 14 and really needed to go up a size. I had my surgery a year ago and am now a size 2. It was a good decision. You are right the states will not take you at that BMI and it won't be paid for by insurance. Dr. Aceves is a very good choice. I was not nervous at all and went by myself. I would do it again. You will find it is actually quite different in eating and how you feel when you eat. At first it is very difficult to eat and you will wonder if you did the right thing. I am one year down and I can eat but my tastes have changed and I can't eat some things I use too--like spicy foods or even sometimes beef is hard. You can feel quite full very fast so I eat small portions several times during the day and you have to make sure you eat healthy and not just snack. It is difficult going out to eat because you get soooo full soooo fast---share with someone. I feel so much better about myself. I too exercised a lot!!!! I ran mini-marathons and exercised often. No matter what I did I couldn't lose (for whatever reason). Partially I'm sure it was my age (49). Anyway, go for it---but do your research. Guest guest
I am so glad I added myself to this group. Long story short, I was a percentage of the band going wrong. A year ago it was removed and I tried my very best to keep the weight off, everything just came up again. I gained every single pound back. I felt so great in my size 6 clothing and now, I am back to square one. The people that kept complimenting me are just quiet or some ask, " what happened? " Nothing I have bad genes, because I swear I tried to keep it off. Needless to say- I don't want to be a barely size 14 (really a 16 or 18). I want to feel good all over again and have all the energy that I had. I went to dinners and had a great time out, without being concern of my weight. My boys were much happier with a happy mom and of course my husband was much happier with a happier motivating wife. Am I being selfish to want to self pay once again? But this will be for a long run.. right? I don't mind being a size 8/10, but once I loose it, can I keep it off without surgery? I know the answer to it. Thanks for the ear-- please advice or comment... Oh- my BMI is about 31 and it too yoyo's from 29-31. > > > > Are there any of you that have had surgery with Dr Aceves that have > had a lower BMI? Guest guest
NO, it is not selfish to self-pay again. If you had cancer and it came back would you be asking yourself if it was okay to get more surgery? You do what you have to do to be healthy--and you already noticed that your boys and husband have more quality of life when YOU have more quality of life. Dr. Aceves and team are the BEST. Go for it girl, your whole family deserves it. gloria > > > > I am so glad I added myself to this group. > Long story short, I was a percentage of the band going wrong.
