Yikes, well my Lap-Band surgery is scheduled August 12. I haven't done the

deposit yet, so I can still back out. On the other Lap Band boards, generally

the consensus on Lap Bands are positive. I was so excited for the Lap-Band, and

now after lurking on these boards I don't know anymore.

I'm 23, recently graduated college in May, and studying for the LSAT. I weigh

220 lbs. At the place I am in life, I seriously thought that the Lap-Band would

be the best option for me. If I have kids, I can have the band adjusted. If my

weight loss slows down, I can get my band re-filled.

It took so long to convince my parents that the band is a great idea, and

they're financing this endeavor as a graduation present. I have no money, and I

don't think they'd pay for me to get a gastric sleeve. I'm sure they'd think

they were sending me to my death if I were to go to Mexico to get 60-80% of my

stomach cut out.

I seriously got myself into a pickle. :/

I am definitely one of those people. Had the band for 5 years and everything I ate came back up, suffered with reflux daily, just went to the dentist and had 6 cavities. I am surprised my teeth have not rotted from all the throwing up of food. I never felt full because everything came back up, whether it was heathly or not. I lived off of soup for almost 5 years. Either my band was too tight where everything came back up or it was too loose and then everything stayed down and I gained the weght back. There was no happy in between. I never felt like I could eat a few bites and be full, as I now feel with the sleeve. I lost 60 lbs and nothing more. My lowest weight was 170 and for my height my heathly weight should have been around 135. I got pregnant and gained it all back plus some. After having the baby I tried to have my band adjusted again only to find out that it had slipped partially and was useless. The doc told me that if it slipped completely, which could happen at any given moment, it would require an emergency surgery. So $17,000 and 5 years later I scheduled my revision. I had the band removed 4 weeks ago with Dr. Aceves in which I found out that Dr. A had to remove a ton of scar tissue that the Lap Band left behind. I was a cash pay patient the first time and again this time. I wish I knew 5 years ago what I know now, I would have saved myself $17,000 plus a lot of complications. I am 4 weeks post op, down 21 lbs and love my sleeve. I have not had my food come back up once and I am finally feeling alive again. I never realized how sluggish my band really made me feel until it was gone.

With all that being said. That is my story and they do have people out there that have been successful with the band. My suggestion to you is to do your research on people that have had the band for 5 + years and see what type of feedback you get. You will be surprised.

Good luck to you!

Hi my first suggestion is to NOT have the Lap-Band. Please read a lot of posts on this site and others about ALL the problems and issues that you have with a Lap-Band. I know right now that is what you read and hear about. But you will regret having one. Please STILL consider Dr. Aceves but start really about the VGS or the "Sleeve" as we call it. It is truly the only way to go. You will be so much happier and never have one regret that you had a "Sleeve." There are quite a few people on this board who have had revisions--had to have their Lap-Band removed and now have a sleeve.

Bipley please jump in here and tell her about your experience. I wish you success in your weight loss journey. If any other's who have read this and had a Lap-Band and had a revision please tell her what it was like.

Hugs,

Suzanne

Go to verticalsleevetalk.com and they have a forum in there just for "band to sleeve revisions". This might help you to see how many people are out there, like me, that have converted to the sleeve after several years of having the band.

Hey there!I just wanted to say that I also considered the lap band when my journey began and opted for the sleeve after reading people have multiple problems and I knew that I wanted something more permanent. No, scratch that...I NEEDED a permanent tool. Sure, there are people out there that love their band and are living fine with it even 5+ years out (I personally know someone who has been banded over 6 years). But what I found was that those stories are few and far between when you compare the sleeve. I have seen more people convert than those who are happy years down the road. With that, I also considered that people years out from WLS tend to "fall off" the boards, getting on with their "new" lives and maybe you/we are only seeing the "problem" cases that are still searching for a solution to their weight loss problem. Either way, a

band is a man-made object. I couldn't rely on it being the forever fix that I knew I needed. It simply can't last forever - everything has an expiration or warranty limit, right? Even if I could be sure it would last for 10 years - what then? PAY to remove it and gain all my weight or PAY to remove and PAY revise to whatever is the newest, best surgery at the time?It was peace of mind for me to pay the few extra bucks and have the sleeve which would be there forever. No malfunctioning parts or wear and tear....just a smaller tummy that functions normally with no maintenance.I am 11 months out and am now 17 weeks pregnant (these 125lbs fixed my infertility problems!) and when my doc told me I had to shoot for 2,200 calories a day, I laughed and told her she was crazy, it couldn't be done. I still am nowhere near 2,200 calories, but I have found that my old grazing habits have allowed me to get closer to

that number and things that I have stayed away from because they are higher in caloric value, I can enjoy now to help with my intake (and haven't gained a pound yet!). So don't let the pregnancy thing or any other problem like that discourage you from the sleeve...that solution is simple - eat more frequently! This has also reminded me that this is just a tool and not a magic fix! You still have to work at it! I am concerned that I can stop these "new" habits when that time comes and I no longer need these extra calories!I think you need to step back and research both to see if the band is worth you being in the high percentage of revision. Talk to Dr. A and see if they have stats on the band and revision. This is a personal decsion but shouldn't be taken lightly or be based on money (because band removal and any problems will far surpass the extra $ to get the sleeve to begin with if that becomes you). If you do your research

and decide the VSG is a better choice, have the "ammo" to talk to your family. If it is the MX thing (surgery is surgery whether it be band or sleeve, if you trust him to do one, there shouldn't be much of a stretch for the other) - there are plenty of us on this board that would be willing to talk with you or your family about our experiences and calm any fears about MX.Best of luck in your decisionSent from my iPhoneOn Jul 19, 2011, at 3:20 PM, "nerdykala" <kalars88@...> wrote:

My mother was convinced I had lost my mind when I told her I was going to have

weight loss surgery - much LESS going to Mexico for it! I bit my tongue and

sent her to all the same websites I had been to in forming my decision. a few

weeks later and she understood what I was doing and why and why I chose the best

possible surgeon for my procedure. And if you want the best, you will either go

to Spain or Mexicali, Mexico.

Give your mom some credit and let her do her own research. She too will

discover that the sleeve is the best current procedure for lack of complications

and maximum success.

Whatever you decide, we are here to support you on your weight loss journey.

Yes, we are strong sleeve supporters but we aren't going to " ditch " you if you

decide another option is the best one for you.

(((hugs!)))

Hi,

Thanks for writing your story. This is what I want others to know before the have a lap band. $17,000 is a lot of $$$$ plus the risks to your health. Thanks for much for saying all the things you have said. I HOPE others will listen before them have a lap band.

Suzanne,

Thanks for the recommendation on the Premier Protein Drinks. We did not have a Costco but you had mentioned in one of your emails the other day that Sam's Club had them. I bought some and they are the best I have tasted yet. I have been having 2 a day since I am not on solids just yet it's hard to get the protein in, so these have helped a ton.

Thanks again!

Hey Keela,

You are so welcome. I love mixing mine in the blender with a few ice cubes. I still drink it for breakfast every morning. You are doing a good thing by drinking two a day. You are getting the protein you need that is so very important. I am glad I could help. If you have questions of any kinds just ask.
