Hi Sharon,

One of my favorite mushies that I still eat is Stouffer's Spinach

Souffle. It's baked with Skim milk and eggs so if eggs bother you it

may not be good. It has 3 servings in each frozen box and a serving

has 6 grams of protein. I know it's not a lot but more than some

things. And when I wasn't that tight I'd eat about 1 1/2 servings.

Now I have to be careful with it and not eat my few bites too fast. I

also loved putting lowfat turkey ham in the food processor and mixing

it with mayo and sweet relish. Still, not probably the most healthy

since its got sodium and mayo but it's what got me through and I loved

it at the time. Didn't matter that I couldn't have bread I'd just eat

it right out of a bowl. Protein always seems to be the issue. Now,

I'm looking for good sources of protein in solid foods, chicken and

turkey don't work at all for me. I guess I should try tuna (it just

doesn't sound good, even though I used to eat it a lot!) Good luck!

Sharon

It is hard at this stage to not eat carbs, try some scambled egss with

low fat cheese. I also ate chicken and tuna salad with low fat mayo and

various soups of course. Cottage cheese is good too!

Hang in there!

Hello Sharon,

I was on a mushie diet for two months last fall because of a severe TMJ type problem.

I would purchase some Unjury and see if you could add that to your mushies to help up your protien intake. When I was on my mushie, mashed potatos and refried beans were about 90% of my diet. Sometimes I'd liven it up by adding canned chicken shredded verry finely to the mashed potatos with fat free gravy. You can purchase refried beans at the supermarket that are fat free, and they taste exactly the same. They also reheat easily. I believe at this point you can try eggs, but I would dilute them down with a little milk and take them slowly. Peanut butter is also a good option, expecially if you can find a low fat version.

You can also check out this site:

http://vsgfaq.com/forums//index.php?s=c2bc7f8938b2f75abba839897d586996 & showforum=21

It's geared towards people who have had the VSG (like me!) but there are a lot of liquid or mushie stage food recipes there.

Hope it helps.

Favorite mushies?

Hi all,I'm currently on mushies and having some trouble, as most of the mushies I've read about that are ok to eat are carbs. So I am drinking protein shakes to get my protein in, rather than through food (since meat seems off limits during mushies). Except for some yogurt and cottage cheese, I'm not getting protein from food. I realize I'm supposed to be more concerned with healing than losing weight, but carbs all day makes me feel bad...I start dragging and have lower energy. Does anyone have any suggestions of some good high-protein mushies that aren't really high in fat (like refried beans from Taco Bell)? Thanks,Sharon

You could make your own beans and refry them with little or no oil. They even taste better!

Thanks to everyone who responded. I bought some fat free refried beans at the

store last

night which are much healthier than the Taco Bell version (not sure why I didn't

think of

that on my own!). I've never tried to make them myself, . Do you use

pinto beans

and just throw them in a skillet? I'm guessing they need to be boiled first?

I was able to tolerate eggs ok (yippee) so I'll be eating more of them as well,

which should

help a bunch. I also have some unflavored Unjury and keep meaning to make the

protein

jello, which will be good for variety as well. I tried cream of chicken soup as

" gravy " for

mashed potatoes and that was really good too.

I used to be vegetarian and learned a tip or two. With beans be sure to soak them in water over night before cooking them. Those around you will appreciate your efforts. ;o)On Jan 17, 2008 3:51 PM, smorgan213 <
