Guest guest
i am banded and while i am grateful to have my band and am down to 135 pounds and feeling great. but, if i could do it over i would go with the sleeve as the maintenace is less. i have probably been on the higher maintenance side as far as fills and my port flipped and the port removed so that my skin could heal as it caused an indentation in my stomach that looked like a 2nd belly button. but i think either way will be a success for you. capriseMarie Friedman <apanther97@...> wrote: I am new to this group, I want to say thanks for all the information, I am curious as to what made you choose the sleve over banding? Guest guest
Ditto to what Caprise wrote. If I had it to do over again I'd get a sleeve. I've lost 112lbs, ready for my tummy tuck, did everything right but I had lots of non surgery related issues. Fills, unfills, barfing, esophageal spasms, the works. If banding was the only way I'd do it again in a nanosecond but if I had it to do over again and had a choice, it would be a sleeve. No fills, unfills, infection, port pain, restriction issues, esophageal spasms, slips, erosion, nothing. When you are done with surgery you are done, you lose weight and go on with your life. Banding is not a bad thing by any stretch, just higher maintenance in follow up care. With sleeves there is a slightly higher risk during surgery (more OR time, more invasive, etc.) but with banding there is MUCH more risk for complications long term. So you have to decide what is right for you. Many (most?) newbies are not ready for permanent, they don't want forever. By the time you hit goal you wonder what is so great about reversible? For what reason would I EVER want to gain over 100# again? 252/150/140Surgery/goal/currentBanded 12/06Goal in 10 monthsOn Jan 24, 2008 12:40 PM, caprise holmes <capriseholmes@... > wrote: i am banded and while i am grateful to have my band and am down to 135 pounds and feeling great. but, if i could do it over i would go with the sleeve as the maintenace is less. i have probably been on the higher maintenance side as far as fills and my port flipped and the port removed so that my skin could heal as it caused an indentation in my stomach that looked like a 2nd belly button. but i think either way will be a success for you. capriseMarie Friedman <apanther97@...> wrote: I am new to this group, I want to say thanks for all the information, I am curious as to what made you choose the sleve over banding? Guest guest
Hi Marie, my name is Theresa and I was banded on 06/07/07. Like several others who "chimed" in on this, if I had to do it over again, I would choose the sleeve. Like Bipley said, in the beginning you like the thought of the band being reversible and adjustable, but why?? I'm all for permanent now! If anything ever happens to my band, I would get the sleeve in a heartbeat! Do your research and make the decision that is best for you. Theresa 06/07/07 223/182/??? Re: Jana... Guest guest
No, a sleeve is the first half of gastric bypass without the intestinal rerouting. I'm on the wrong computer but I have a link to different surgery types. When I switch computers if nobody else has the link I'll post it then. Sleeves are where they remove most of your stomach. It's kinda sorta like the permanent version of a pouch in banding. Surgical complications are slightly higher but long term complications are much lower. Guest guest
The "Sleeve" is short for Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, it's the first part of the Duodenal Switch, however they leave out the intestinal re-routing. They remove a large portion of your stomach (60-80% depending on doctor and technique, I had 80% removed) including the portion that produces Grehilin, the hunger hormone. There is a good chart of all of the surgeries here: http://www.lapsf.com/weight-loss-surgeries.html It's to the left of the LapBand.
