I was just sleeved this week, self pay, and have the same concerns.  A friend of mine had the band 4 years ago and went in last year cuz she thoght she had band trouble.  Her ins paid for gi and floroscop because of the medical issue she had.  Dont think they would have done any fix unless it was life thretenting.  I set aside a chunk of cash in my med flex account at work so in case I needed something stateside I would have funds if ins didnt pay.  I still think it might be cheaper to go back to Dr A for my 3 month.

I just had a band to sleeve revision 2 months ago with DR. A and have not had any need to go back. I spoke with my family doc here in my home town and asked if he can take my bloodwork for me once a year and send me to an imaging clinic after 6 months to get a barium swallow and he said sure. Other than that unless you are having complications I don't think there is much after care with the sleeve.

I am curious-My insurance wants me to jump through hoops and back again. A friend of mine played their game for 2 years and finally said "enough" and went to Dr. A and self paid. My question is-has anyone out there who has self paid in Mexico had any reason to go to a Dr. stateside afterwards (for something relating to the VSG) and if so, has your insurance paid or not paid because they didn't pay for the procedure?Quite frankly, this is a major concern for me.Thanks!

The only thing you need done after 3 mos. post op is have your blood

work done to check levels of various things. Your primary care physician

can give you a lab slip and code it correctly so that your insurance

will pay the bill. Other than that, there is no after-care to be

concerned about.

My insurance sucks all around. They won't pay for the surgery-period, there

isn't even a chance. They already won't pay for my bloodwork, so it won't be any

diff post-op. I don't know if they will pay for an upper GI... I will have to

look into that. But honestly barring complications like a leak once I get back

home (which is statistically unlikely) I really won't have anything to worry

about, talk to your insurance, they have to tell you what would be covered by

your policy. 90 some-odd % ...I think it was 96%... of all leaks occur with in

the first 48 hours and I, and you, will be in the capable hands of Dr. A still

at that point. If you follow you post-op diet to the letter and not over stress

or over stretch your sleeve while its healing you have even less of a chance at

leaks. There is still a small change you could get a leak, but with Dr. A's

history tbh I am not really all that concerned. Like I told my PCP I am not

really all that concerned about leaks, *MY* biggest fear is an embolism because

I have a 6 hour flight when I leave the hosp. *If* I am unlucky enough to need

serious medical care stateside then it will either be on an emergency bases and

I will find out how much my insurance will pay and add whatever is left to my

pile of current medical bills that I pay a little at a time as I can afford it,

or it won't be an emergency and I may be able to return to Dr. A for treatment.

There really isn't much more that I can do since my insurance policy is useless

in many areas. We pay BIG money for tiny coverage... so I am used to my

insurance not covering things they should... If you are REALLY concerned save

some money back for unexpected expenses and if you end up not needing it you

will have a nice nest egg for either plastic surgery if you end up needing

excess skin removed (if you so choose) or for a nice reward vacation when you

get close to or hit your goal :)
