Guest guest
I use sick, vacation, personal, etc. days depending on what I have available. When Grace has had surgery I still have to use those leaves in order to be paid, but my job is "safe" because I file for FMLA. Employers CAN require you to file your time loss under FMLA for even the single days or for most kids, even sick days. But so far my employer doesn't realize that and I haven't pointed it out! Guest guest
I do not work but my husband does use his vacation/sick time. He honestly takes more time then he is technically given but he works for a very small company (5 people including the owner) and they have given him extra time over the past year (and paid him for all of it) so that he can be with Cole and me through this whole process. I don't know how other people do it. I would hate to have to go alone. Guest guest
We are very very lucky. my husband works for an incredible and very understanding company. They really understand that you can not be a good employee when you are worried about your child. For all you moms and dads that travel alone my heart goes out to you. The whole trip would be very draining to do alone. You are such strong parents! Guest guest
I don't know if any of you have pursued this avenue, or how you feel about it, but Abigail just qualified for 240 personal care hours for 6 months to be used when I need it. I can hire a personal care attendant to go to doctors appointments with me, help with her bathing, go with me on vacation or anything else I might need involving her care. And it can be anyone but the parent, so you can hire your sister, aunt, mother etc. so you don't feel wierd about having a stranger help out. And if it's someone you know they can sit with the siblings while you do the actual care if you prefer. -Ami > >> > >> I use sick, vacation, personal, etc. days depending on what I have available. When Grace has had surgery I still have to use those leaves in order to be paid, but my job is " safe " because I file for FMLA. Employers CAN require you to file your time loss under FMLA for even the single days or for most kids, even sick days. But so far my employer doesn't realize that and I haven't pointed it out! > >>  > >> Jane > >> > >> > >> > >> > >> ____________ _________ _________ __ > >> From: Amy <amscales11@ ..> > >> infantile scoliosis treatment @groups. com > >> Sent: Tue, July 6, 2010 10:32:51 AM > >> Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Time off from Work > >> > >>  > >> I used all my vacation time this last year on Makenna's doctors appointments. Guest guest
Yeah, I meant to post on this yesterday...This is GREAT, Ami! I hope we can hear more about individual family stories on how they are dealing with PIS and ET.....The travel, fighting insurance, employers, medical professionals & family, etc.... When Liv was diagnosed I had to make hard choices and made great sacrifice to get her the care she deserved....It shouldnt have been so hard and I hope that by sharing our challenges with the above on CAST, we can help others...Things have got to change, as a family going through this should not have to jump so many hurdles to get adequate care... Guest guest
I am pretty grateful they gave her those hours, I didn't even think about it until my Mom told me to apply. It was very easy, usually your doctor puts in the referal, I called the Visiting Nurses Association and did an over the phone interview. They ask questions about care, do they need help bathing, dressing, toileting, positioning in bed, emotional development, and things like that. I can only explain how Vermont works, but we have extensive early intervention services and you can contact anyone including Children With Special Health Needs, Family Network, Medicaid, our daughter has Dr. Dynasaur (currently applying for Beckett). If you apply for Beckett (insurance for disabled children, no income limits) or the State Children's Health Insurance they offer these kinds of services , more info at www.cms.hhs.gov/home/schip.asp or look up Children With Special Health Needs.. OK..too much information, I'm a fast typer..I know many mom's on here probably don't considered their children disabled, but technically they fit the definition so if it helps you and your child out to get services you need..? > >> >> > >> >> I use sick, vacation, personal, etc. days depending on what I have > >>available. When Grace has had surgery I still have to use those > >> leaves in > >>order to be paid, but my job is " safe " because I file for > >> FMLA. Employers > >>CAN require you to file your time loss under FMLA > >> for even the single days > >>or for most kids, even sick days. But so far my employer doesn't > >> realize > >>that and I haven't pointed it out! > >> >>  > >> >> Jane > >> >> > >> >> > >> >> > >> >> > >> >> ____________ _________ _________ __ > >> >> From: Amy <amscales11@ ..> > >> >> infantile scoliosis treatment @groups. com > >> >> Sent: Tue, July 6, 2010 10:32:51 AM > >> >> Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Time off from Work > >> >> > >> >>  > >> >> I used all my vacation time this last year on Makenna's doctors > >>appointments. Guest guest
I hate to disagree, but it isn't always the fact that our children are considered "disabled". Even though Grace has had numerous medical conditions since she was born, because it doesn't keep her from typical day to day activities for her age (baths and whatnot are not included), our state does not recognize her as "disabled". I have looked it up not for getting additional help, but to at least claim her as disabled on our taxes. This is a blurb re: the medical portion: Medical Eligibility Along with meeting the financial requirements, your child must meet all of Social Security's disability rules. Your child cannot be working and earning over $1,000 a month as of May 2010 (the amount changes every year) or the SSA will consider your child not disabled. In addition, your child must have a medical condition (physical, mental or both) that causes him to be severely limited in his daily living activities. Moreover, a child will only be considered disabled by the SSA if his medical condition has lasted or is expected to last for 12 months or more, or result in death. Read more: SSI Disability Requirements for Children | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/list_6496340_ssi-disability-requirements-children.html#ixzz0t7imZ86t In addition, we are a two income household, and while we don't make that much per year, we are WAY over the amount allowed in our state to claim disability. Congrats to those of you who have been successful, but please don't say as a blanket statement that "kids with scoliosis qualify". There are many factors into qualifying. Guest guest
the biggest factor: $ I feel for anyone having to apply for SSI. SSI was adamant that Liv was not disabled...even though she spent months in hospital per yr in halo for scoli, had a severely twisted spine at 9 months of age and wore plaster for over 6 yrs! I am a single mom and had to make a choice to live at poverty level just to get SSI for Liv. A choice that was not easy, but necessary....When your child is hospitalized for months out of state, and you are unable to work, help is needed.... Its criminal that we have to fight for this on top of everything else. I think your childs disability level should be determined by the parent w/ docs confirmation. My 2 cents, HRH > I hate to disagree, but it isn't always the fact that our children are > considered " disabled " . Even though Grace has had numerous medical > conditions > since she was born, because it doesn't keep her from typical day to day > activities for her age (baths and whatnot are not included), our state > does not > recognize her as " disabled " . I have looked it up not for getting > additional > help, but to at least claim her as disabled on our taxes. > > > This is a blurb re: the medical portion: > > Medical Eligibility >  > Along with meeting the financial requirements, your child must meet all of > Social Security's disability rules. Guest guest
I am sorry you found my post offensive when I was only trying to be helpful. For clarification I am quite familiar with the rules of SSI for unique circumstances of my own, my job. I was 1. speaking of Medicaid which is based on income, and personal care services are not decided by disability but by need. and 2. Children with Special Health Needs medicaid waiver which is based on the income of the child (usually $0 unless they have a big trust fund somewhere), not the parents and is called different things in different states. This is based on the SSI defintion but is NOT SSI. Sorry for the misunderstanding and your frustration. As for the day to day activities, it does affect us. My daughter lives to swim, and she has to watch while everyone else swims in grandma's pool. Every summer activity we do involves water. She can't bathe. She opens the door and says it's too hot to go outside so is stuck inside. She can't play at her favorite playground b/c it is all sand. This may seem like small stuff but we live 40 minutes from the nearest town, so for her it does limit her day to day activities, severely. She needs help getting in and out of chairs, positioning in bed, getting dressed, putting her shoes on, she was flying solo in gymnastics but I now have to go with her on the floor. These are all things she could do before getting her cast. They are worth it, but they are limitations. And it does depend on the State you live in..baths are considered under the " self care " and " health " sections for the Beckett application. But you are right, there is not a blanket statement that fits everyone, and I should have been more considerate. -Ami Mom to Abigail double S 45 down to 24 in 1st cast ial TGA/VSD/ASD with C-Curve > > >> >> > > >> >> I use sick, vacation, personal, etc. days depending on what I have > > >>available.ÃÆ'‚ When Grace has had surgery I still have to use those > > >> leaves in > > >>order to be paid, butÃÆ'‚ my job is " safe " because I file for > > >> FMLA.ÃÆ'‚ Employers > > >>CAN require you to file your time lossÃÆ'‚ under FMLA > > >> forÃÆ'‚ even the single days > > >>or for most kids, even sick days.ÃÆ'‚ But so far my employer doesn't > > >> realize > > >>that and I haven't pointed it out! > > >> >> ÃÆ'‚ > > >> >> Jane > > >> >> > > >> >> > > >> >> > > >> >> > > >> >> ____________ _________ _________ __ > > >> >> From: Amy <amscales11@ ..> > > >> >> infantile scoliosis treatment @groups. com > > >> >> Sent: Tue, July 6, 2010 10:32:51 AM > > >> >> Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Time off from Work > > >> >> > > >> >> ÃÆ'‚ > > >> >> I used all my vacation time this last year on Makenna's doctors > > >>appointments. Guest guest
Thank you, Ami! : ) I don't know if Bex would qualify, but it is good to find out. He does have all of the same needs you mentioned, but we have regular health insurance currently, not Medicaid. Our big issue is whether he really can't go to preschool because of the sand and water issues- especially sand. I'm torn, but we may have to decide to opt out. Very sweet of you to post these links! Guest guest
Your welcome Heidi OK, my computer crashed twice so this will be quick. Abby is going to preschool in September and we hope to set up a 504 plan, federal law requires all children with physical needs to be met in order to go to school. If sand and water will keep Bex from school, and you don't object to public schools, you can set up a 504 plan with the school. If Bex needs a special chair, no water, no pushing etc. that's what the plan is all about. There is a great post on it here http://www.scoliosis.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-1583.html good luck! -Ami > > > >> >> > > > >> >> I use sick, vacation, personal, etc. days depending on what I have > > > >>available.ÃÆ'Æ'‚ÃÆ'‚Â When Grace has had surgery I still have to use > >those > > > >> leaves in > > > >>order to be paid, butÃÆ'Æ'‚ÃÆ'‚Â my job is " safe " because I file > for > > > >> FMLA.ÃÆ'Æ'‚ÃÆ'‚Â Employers > > > >>CAN require you to file your time lossÃÆ'Æ'‚ÃÆ'‚Â under FMLA > > > >> forÃÆ'Æ'‚ÃÆ'‚Â even the single days > > > >>or for most kids, even sick days.ÃÆ'Æ'‚ÃÆ'‚Â But so far my employer > >doesn't > > > >> realize > > > >>that and I haven't pointed it out! > > > >> >> ÃÆ'Æ'‚ÃÆ'‚Â > > > >> >> Jane > > > >> >> > > > >> >> > > > >> >> > > > >> >> > > > >> >> ____________ _________ _________ __ > > > >> >> From: Amy <amscales11@ ..> > > > >> >> infantile scoliosis treatment @groups. com > > > >> >> Sent: Tue, July 6, 2010 10:32:51 AM > > > >> >> Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Time off from Work > > > >> >> > > > >> >> ÃÆ'Æ'‚ÃÆ'‚Â > > > >> >> I used all my vacation time this last year on Makenna's doctors > > > >>appointments. Guest guest
I flew on a Weds, surgery Thursday, home Sunday, and went back to work on Monday, so you should be just fine. I wish I had taken a couple more days off because I was pretty tired, but otherwise ok. Danae (who ran 4 miles yesterday in training for a 10K on 6/11!!)
