Guest guest
, I had the sleeve done on April 10 and I have lost 40 pounds so far - in just about two months. I have to say that the first two weeks were a challenge - but after that things got much better. I have been very happy with my decision and I feel great. ill. Life is getting better and my clothes fit or are too loose now. I have been exercising and walked 4 miles yesterday - some of it uphill. The hardest part is getting in the 60 grams of protein and drinking all the water that I need too, because I am not hungry - which is really a switch. I read something yesterday that said my stomach used to be the size of a football and now is a golfball. Good luck 235 / 194 / Looking forward to 150 maybe even 135 > > Hi every one, > I am getting excited about having the sleeve done. I have decided to get the sleeve I think it will be the best for me. Guest guest
Hi & , Congratulations on your sleeves! I hope everything works out great for you two! , 40lbs is AWESOME!! I was reading an article on the sleeve and was wondering at what point does it have to be removed? The article said The "Endo Barrier" can't be used permanently so I wonder how long you can keep it in. It did say that in a 3 month study patients lost 10-15% of their weight which sound pretty good! I would guess many lose more then that, like you have :-), your nearly at a 20% loss!!, in just a few weeks!! That is fantastic! Forgive me if this is a redundant question. Guest guest
The sleeve is permanent. The Dr. takes your stomach and cuts off 60- 80% of it and then removes it. So it goes from a football to looking more like a piece of fettuccini. It reduces the capacity, but leaves the entrance and exit of the stomach the same and there is no bypass of the Intestine > > > > Hi every one, > > I am getting excited about having the sleeve done. Guest guest
Dana...You are referring to a different procedure than the VSG (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy). In the sleeve procedure Dr. Aceves does he removes a greater portion of the stomach and it is like a forever banded pouch with perfect restriction right out of surgery. It's referred to as a sleeve or banana stomach because of the shape of the stomach after surgery. It's about the size of a small banana. There is no " sleeve " on the outside of the stomach, it's just a smaller stomach. The nice part of a sleeve is that it requires little, if any, medical follow up. No fills, etc.On Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:17 PM, <rondana@...> wrote: Hi & , Congratulations on your sleeves! I hope everything works out great for you two! , 40lbs is AWESOME!! Guest guest
...I believe the diet depends on your BMI. If you are 40 or more it is low carb (30gms daily), low fat, adequate protein, and unlimited calories. If your BMI is 39 or less, no pre op diet. Guest guest
HA! Well, not fettuccine but more like a sleeve or a banana. Fettuccine is a little more extreme. That would take about a size 2 bougie. ;o) Dr. A uses a 34 bougie but over sews the stomach so it ends up being the same as a 32 bougie which is standard in sleeves. Guest guest
Thanks Bipley...It sounds more like a mini-bypass (with out the intestinal part). Could their new stomach stretch like the bypass patients? (some do, not all of course:- )Would they need a revision at some point if it did? I'm asking because a friend really wants the band..her doctor wants her to have the bypass and she refuses to do it so I have been looking at all WLS to see what else is out there. Maybe one day Insurance will cover WLS of our own choice, and not just bypass. I guess I was reading something totally different. The Endo sleeve was a mesh-like material that lined the first two feet of the small intestines and is temporary. It stopped calories from being absorbed. What do you suppose they use that for? It does sound less invasive so maybe they use it like the balloon to reduce weight prior to WLS? I'm just guessing..;-) Glad to se your still on here helping everyone! Thanks again! Guest guest
Hi Dana...Oh my nooooo, it's not like Mini Gastric Bypass at all! MGB is really dangerous and none of the good surgeons in Mexico or the US do that procedure, only the less reputable surgeons do that procedure. This isn't MGB, it is the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. They just make your stomach smaller. The procedure you are referring to is something they came out with thinking that if people could just get down to a normal weight they could maintain on their own. If they would have thought that one through they would realize that a this was poor thinking, if someone loses their band they typically gain their excess weight back. Or when bypass people quit malabsorbing at the same rate they gain their weight back. Etc. So they changed the mesh procedure to be something that could be used short term in high risk surgical patients. If they can get down to a more reasonable weight to where surgery is not as risky then they would go on to remove the mesh and do a full bypass. They had a poll on a large WLS forum recently asking what members thought of the concept of if they could lose weight could they maintain on their own without further surgical intervention. People laughed at them. ;o) That's when they decided to try it out in high risk people and see if it would help them get down to a weight where surgery wouldn't be as dangerous. The sleeve can stretch over time but it would take effort to do so. It's not the same as stretching your banded pouch or stretching your bypass stomach, it's a different part of the stomach that is kept that does not stretch as much. Guest guest
Hi Margaret, I had surgery about 4 weeks ago. You are asking a lot of great questions, and some of the very same I asked too. Why outside of the US? For most of us our insurance in the US wouldn't pay the cost of having the surgery done here in the US. The next for me was I had a friend who had WLS and Dr. Aceves was the surgeon. She was a nurse and so I respected her opinion. She answered all my questions and said check him out and look at the web site and see what people have to say about him and his hospital. So I did. The cost of the surgery in the US would have cost me between $25,000 and $30,000 in the area I live. The more I learned about the facility and how well run it is I thought why would I want to be treated poorly in the US when I can go to Mexico and be treated # 1. They are always asking you how you feel and they had 3 doctors who must have done rounds at least 3 times a day if not more. They were always cleaning the hospital, it is the cleanest I have ever seen. They know your name and answer all your questions. I would go back in a heart beat! As for the acid reflux, mine is gone. When I was there they found out I had a hernia and repaired it at no charge to me while they were doing the sleeve surgery--in the US they would have never done that. I did have a little trouble the first couple of weeks sleeping, but now I am sleeping well. I hope that answers some of your questions. You will never regret making the choice to go to Mexico and seeing Dr. Aceves. Suzanne In a message dated 11/19/2008 8:50:15 P.M. I want to know if anyone out there had acid reflux before the surgery and if so has it gone away? How about sleeping at night. Did anyone have trouble falling a sleep and restlessness at night? If so did this go away with the surgery? I'm just starting my research and any info you can give me will really help. Thanking you in advace for any assistance.Margaret One site has it all. Guest guest
I had my band done by Dr. Aceves and he did surgery on many of my friends. I've been in OR when he's operated on my friends (I'm a nurse). After watching him in action he is the ONLY surgeon I wanted touching me for a revision to a sleeve. The man is talented, he's skilled, he's got it all. I went to Mexico because it is simply better than the US. Dr. Aceves is the best surgeon, has the best stats, the best of everything. The prices are better and you get more for your money. In the US you spend $20K for the same surgery, you stay in the hospital for 1 night (if that), and you never hear from the office again. In Mexico you spend $9500, spend three nights in the hospital, you are treated with respect and dignity, you see the docs 6 times a day, they follow up after surgery to see if you have problems, concerns, or questions, and they are always available. I can't say that I had insomnia before surgery but I do now. I just don't need as much sleep as I did before. Before I lost weight I needed 9-10 hours of sleep a night. Today I need 6-8 hours. I have more energy and feel better. You won't be making a mistake by going to Dr. Aceves, he's the best. If you want a safe surgery by a skilled surgeon in a hospital that is better than the best, you'll go to Aceves. I want to know if anyone out there had acid reflux before the surgery and if so has it gone away? How about sleeping at night. Did anyone have trouble falling a sleep and restlessness at night? If so did this go away with the surgery? I'm just starting my research and any info you can give me will really help. Thanking you in advace for any assistance. Guest guest
Margaret: It's funny, I was just thinking about sleep before my sleeve and sleep now this morning. To answer that question, I sleep very good now rather than before. It used to take me an hour to fall asleep, and then I was a very light sleeper. I'm still a light sleeper, but I think with cutting out the caffeine, I fall asleep faster, and have a more restful sleep. As far as why I chose Mexico, I also did my research, and Dr. Aceves is very skilled in his field, money had a factor in my decision, and honestly, I love Mexico! The people are so kind, and you will certainly find that at Almator. The doctors come to see you several times a day, the nurses are great at meeting your every need, and the hospital is clean, clean, clean! I had acid reflux before my surgery, and Dr. Aceves told me that the surgery will not fix this; so I am on Nexium-which fixes that!! BTW you can buy Nexium for less in Mexico without a prescription, so you may want to stock up if you go! I have never regretted my decision, and am soooo happy now! There is a bit of mourning that happens in that your relationship with food changes-but a healthier new you emerges! Good luck in your decision; I highly recommend Dr. A and Almator hospital. Guest guest
As far as Mexico, I chose that site because my health insurance didn't cover the sleeve. Kaiser is now covering it, but you have to jump through all of these hoops for at least one year and then they will either accept you or reject you. I didn't want to spend the next year waiting to see if they would accept me into the program. I wanted to get my life straight now and not wait. So, I embarked on a journey of research to find a surgeon who was reputable, skilled, and knowledgeable in laproscopic surgery. I kept finding out information from mostly nurses and medical personnel who had their surgery done in Mexico. I initially inquired about the band, but quickly From: mjcamarena54 <mjcamarena54>Subject: [Dr-Aceves-bandster s] Sleeve @groups. comReceived: Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:36 PM Hi everyone,My name is Margaret and I'm thinking about having the sleeve surgery but I concers. Guest guest
Hi Dano, You will be in great hands. The Doctors and staff are brilliant. They are kind and caring and you will be so thankful that you had this done. The hospital is wonderful and so very clean. I know that there are a lot of unknown things going through your head right now--that is nomal. Just keep coming back and asking questions. Everyone is so helpful. Don't get worried if Ernesto isn't at the airport on time to pick you up--they say it is normal that he is late and he was when he picked me up. Just find a chair sit down and look for him. He will come walking down through the airport with your name on a piece of paper. You may ask yourself after the surgery, what have I done to myself. That is normal lots of people think that. Just know the 1st month is the most difficult to get through after the surgery, but after that you will slowly find your comfort level with eating food again. Keep asking questions on this site. This will be a life changing event for you. And one day you will notice that your clothes are getting baggy and you can get rid of some of those clothes and get something new. I recommend keeping one pair of "fat pants" just to remind yourself how far you have come. Congratulations for doing something for yourself. It is time you take care of you and then the rest of your life will be much healthier. This is not a magical cure, but a tool to allow you to become a healthy weight for the first time in a long time. Take care and keep coming back to this site.
