If you are having these issues, I suggest that you try the clear liquids for a few days and see if that will help your stomach. Nexium never worked well for me at all. Prilosec was what worked best for me. The other thing that worked well for me when my stomach was upset was a popscicle --Buy some no sugar added All Natural Fruit popsicles and have one. They seemed to help me a lot. Your stomach is swollen right now and it takes it awhile to recover. Your new stomach will only hold about as much as the size of your thumb, so that is the reason you are having a difficult time getting everything in like the liquids in- don't panic this is pretty normal. The most important thing is your protein drink, so sip on it all day long if that is what it takes.

Going back to the clear liquids for a few days may help. Make some nice chicken soup and try that. Your "head" is telling you that the mashed potatoes is what is good because that is what your stomach knows. You are going to have to be in control of what goes in your mouth NOT you head OK. I know it is a hard things to over come, but you have to take back the power and control.

Suzanne

I'm getting discouraged. I had sleeve 7 wks ago. I am still having nausea, even when I take one pill of daily meds. I am tired of scrambled eggs, yogurt, refried beans, cottage cheese. Even those foods sometimes are uncomfortable. The only thing I want to eat these days is mashed potatoes, which are Carb nightmares. Often I just don't eat because its safer and easier. I take prilosec or nexium and they don't seem to make any difference, even if I take 2.

It is not easy to drink enough liquids, just doesn't go down easily. I struggle to get my protein in.

Any suggestions? How long will I be like this?

The good news is I'm losing weight but don't feel good about my nutritional intake.

Hi Anita,

I understand what you mean by a testy stomach.  I named mine " Tina - the tiny terrible tummy " .  Tina gave me fits for the first four months.

First of all, I looked so normal on the outside that I kept forgetting that I had just gone through MAJOR surgery so I forgot to be patient with myself, my tummy, and my healing process.

Second, I learned from Dr. Aceves that Tina was still making the same quantity of stomach acid that she needed for her PREVIOUS size.  She did eventually learn to adjust the amount of acid that she produces for her NEW size.  It took me about 4 months before everything finally came together and I was no longer feeling nauseous and frustrated with what I could and couldn't eat.

Tina still does not like dense protein - steak is no longer enjoyable for me.  But she does really well with anything that has been previously ground - like hamburger meat, or sausage (of all things!).  Softer proteins (chicken, fish, eggs) all do really well.  Tina HATES rice, so that is no longer in my diet.  Sometimes she doesn't like pasta much either but it varies so I play it by ear.  Not that I NEED pasta, but my goal was to eat as normally as possible - not remake my entire life around an eating regime.  I know that I can't stick with an eating regime so why set myself up for failure, you know?

I doubled up on my antacids, made sure I got my protein with my powdered drinks, and then ate whatever Tina would " allow " until she got totally healed.  As I said, it seemed that it took me about 4 months.

I am 2 weeks away from my one year " surgi-versary " and have no problems with nauseau anymore.  I eat whatever I want, just in VERY small quantities, VERY slowly, and I CHEW like I never had before in my life.

It will all be okay.  You just need to remember to be patient with yourself and your testy tummy.  You really will become friends...  ;-)Cheryl

I am going to jump in and suggest Egg Drop soup...either get some at a local Chinese take out place, or make it yourself. The eggs will at least give you some good protein.

I have found that tea made with some Ginger is very soothing on a testy stomach.

Thanks everyone for suggestions and support.  Another week has gone by and I suspect I was eating too much, and  not chewing enough.  It is hard to get used to it all.  And I changed to prilosec, but I don't know if that has mattered.  I am better now, not as grumpy!!
