Guest guest
Hi , I had surgery last week and I used to smoke. I stopped months before my surgery and I'm glad I did. Not that it was easy, because it isn't ever easy to quit an addiction. This was probably my 20th time attempting to quit (maybe more). I'm a nurse, so this isn't a totally lay person's view of your situation, but here's my spiel: Your abdomen in sore after surgery, so it makes it hard to take deep breaths. I remember thinking the first few days post op " thank God I stopped smoking " because it would have been so much harder to breathe. My lungs still hurt a little because I don't breath deeply enough. I constantly have to remind myself to take deep breaths. You are already at risk for higher complications during and after surgery because you haven't stopped smoking and your surgery is only 1 week away. Smoking damages your blood vessels which slows healing, increases your risk of developing infections and puts you at higher risk for blood clots. You are also have a high risk for developing pneumonia after surgery. These are only a few of the increased risks associated with smoking and having surgery. I'm sure you've heard this before, but these things are very dangerous! I don't mean to lecture you, but there is a serious reason they tell you to quit smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery. Some surgeons here in the states won't do any elective surgery on someone who doesn't quit at least 1 month before surgery. No one will be able to tell you for sure what will happen to you during/after surgery, but you should really reconsider having surgery if you aren't going to quit. I wish you the best of luck! Jen > > im having trouble quitting smoking and my surgery is a week away- what if i cant quit? > here is my lil story- i smoked up until july 11th...quit for 17 days and me and my fiance were going to break up- i was verbally abusive and i hated him...the thing was- he wasnt doing anything wrong...i started up again, promising myself that i would only have 3 a day...well now i am up to about 8 a day! it wont get any worse than this but i need to know if i smoke just a couple up until the day of my surgery, what will it effect?- i know that it will slow healing AFTER my surgery but im really scared of the " during and directly after " surgery part...will my lung collapse?, will i " lose my breath " in the surgery process and die? > > ok ok i have a million questions but these are the most important in my mind right now. can anybody tell me what you are supposed to have two weeks before surgery and what NOT to have, and what about the day before? > i know i should be asking my doctor these things but id rather ask people " out of a professional stand-point " ...any doctor i talk to will def tell me to quit smoking-duh...but what about the people like me who are having alot of trouble with it and are going nuts thinking about it? help! >
Guest guest
Hi, Wow, first of all you should be on some kind of diet before at least 2 weeks before you have surgery. For me the Atkins Diet was the one that worked best for me. Do the best you can with this diet. We all struggled when it came to getting ready to have this surgery. Once you get to the hospital and they run all your tests and send you off to the hotel they will tell you to go out and have anything you want for dinner the night before you have surgery the next morning. You know kind of like your LAST BIG meal. The day you fly to San Diego, you shouldn't have anything to eat after 6:00 am because they are going to run a blood panel on you when you get to the hospital. You can have water to drink and that helps. Bring a snack along in your purse so you can have something to eat after they run the blood panel, because you will have to wait for the group of people to go through all the tests before they take you to the hotel. I had a bag of trail mix that I love in my purse. Now about your smoking. I know it is an addiction just like food is. What I hear from you is a lot of excuses why you CAN'T stop. You have to be willing in your head to stop the smoking. Have you tried medication or the patches to stop smoking? It is a difficult thing to give up. But if you are struggling with smoking and giving it up what are you going to do when it comes to food. which is an addiction too???? How about every time you want to smoke you go for a small walk? I know they have medication to help you stop smoking ask your doctor about getting some. You WILL NOT be allowed to smoke at the hospital in Mexicali, so you might as well tackle the addiction right now. I am not saying it will be easy, but you really have to be willing to do this. To me all I heard was why you couldn't. I will teach you a little something about your brain. As long as you say your can't your brain will NEVER allow you to do it. How about saying I will do this, or I will really try to stop smoking. Have you ever watched anyone die from lung cancer? I have it isn't pretty, and it is pretty ugly. My mother died from lung cancer at the age of 47. So I am asking you to give PLEASE yourself permission to stop smoking. Hugs, Suzanne In a message dated 8/1/2011 7:24:20 A.M. Guest guest
I was told to quit smoking for years. I was told that it was bad for me, etc., but my son who had the surgery prior to me told me that they would not do the surgery unless I quit smoking. I stopped 2 weeks prior to the surgery. I wanted the surgery more than cigarettes. When I got to the hospital, I learned that I could have had the surgery even though I smoked. I was so glad my son lied to me. I am still not smoking. My cough has gone, and I have had a super easy time with my surgery. My surgery was May 25, 2011. Step up to the plate and trash the cigarettes. Think about your sexy new body! Don't you want it more than cigarettes? Usually when you stop smoking, you gain weight, but not if you quit now! It is a win-win situation! I wish you the best .....You are going to be so thrilled with yourself! I don't usually say something like that, but it proves just how much he loved you and wanted you to stop smoking! Congratulations on ALL your success. Way to go. Guest guest
This i crap. Sorry but I smoked on the way TO the hospital, did fine, smoked outside when I woke up. The pre-op diet is 7 DAYS of low carb, NOT two weeks. Quit or don't, it's really up to you. Yes it's better for you but if you can't do it, one thing at a time. Guest guest
I totally disagree. That you did it and are fine does not make it right. I hear people advising others to not follow the post op diet because they did not do it and nothing happened. This does not make it right or safe. I think it is irresponsible to give this advise. Maybe you did OK but would've done much better if you did not smoke. You should not choose which instructions to follow and which ones to ignore. Please do what your dr asks you to do, it is in your best interest. BTW pre op diet varies for everyone, mine was over 7 days per Dr. A's instructions. Not everyone's instruction, recovery or weight loss is the same. SueFrom: ' Moller <widget1@...> Sent: Monday, August 1, 2011 6:22 PMSubject: Re: having trouble quitting smoking- help! This i crap. Guest guest
Well, I guess if you only wanted to do the pre-op diet for 7 days you can. But the longer you do it the better off you are when it comes to your surgery. Some people never manage to do it. I just wanted to give myself the best chances I could. So IT IS NOT A BUNCH of CRAP. I guess when I was there I NEVER SAW anyone outside smoking. But I still will encourage her to STOP smoking before she goes. There is a lot to deal with that 1st months and smoking IS NOT going to make it any easier. Suzanne In a message dated 8/1/2011 9:22:30 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, widget1@... writes: This i crap. Guest guest
No, it's not crap.  It's a bit like saying that someone smoked while pregnant and it didn't hurt anything so what's the big deal.  I just couldn't quit, I tried and couldn't do it.  I experienced Atelecasis probably because of it and it meant another 1.5 days in the hospital after my band to sleeve revision. Dr. Aceves requests that you do your very best to stop smoking.  He doesn't require it, but he does practically beg you to stop.  So please, let's not call his orders crap.  It's disrespectful. The pre op diet is not 7 days, it depends on the BMI.  As I recall for a BMI of 30-39 it is suggested and encouraged but not required.  For a BMI of 40-49 it is 7 days of low carb.  For a BMI of 50-59 it is 14 days of low carb.  Beyond that I do not know what it is. Guest guest
I actually wasn't stating that his orders were crap, but the replies the OP was getting. All this "expert advice" from people that have gone through it is exactly why I rarely post. If someone says something that others don't agree with, statistics and experts come pouring out the window. All she was asking was if it was required she quit smoking. Suzanne you should be ashamed, it is NOT required and to say "oh well I NEVER SAW anyone smoking" is quite a bit different than "smoking is not even allowed at the hospital". So much WRONG information on Dr. Aceves' forum and that makes me sad. Re: having trouble quitting smoking- help! No, it's not crap. On Mon, Aug 1, 2011 at 6:22 PM, ' Moller <widget1@...> wrote: This i crap. Guest guest
I was sleeved 5 weeks ago and Dr. Aceves exact words to me and my sleeve sister were this..."If you are not a smoker you will have to be on Nexium for 3 months post surgery, if you are a smoker you will have to be on Nexium for 6 months after surgery. Of course they do encourage you to quit 2 weeks prior to surgery but they are also aware that some will not quit. Guest guest
,I agree with you 100%..That is the reason I don't even bother to post on here anymore. I used to smoke and had several surgeries during that time and it did not effect me at all. I was able to quit 2 years ago thanks to nicotene gum and chewed that right after surgery.Good LuckFrom: ' Moller <widget1@...> Sent: Tuesday, August 2, 2011 9:08 AMSubject: Re: having trouble quitting smoking- help! Guest guest
thank you all for your information, i was a little flustered a couple days ago but im ok now thanks to everybodys messages. i just wanted to let evrybody know that i AM on a diet- i have been for a week now- one more week to go. my surgery date is aug 9th. i started out at a whopping 315 lbs and im down to 298 as of this morning- my diet consists of three protien shakes a day, i eat jello if im hungry(which, surprisingly i am NOT!) or broth- which i love!. i have a confession to make,...maybe you all will hate me but i was desperate for advice....im not getting the surgery with dr aceves. im in nj and im having the surgery done for free right down the road from me. my insurance took care of the whole bill. the reason im on this site was because it was the only forum that talked about the sleeve that i could get into without a membership i hope you all are not mad and decide to ban me... but there it is. another hard confession to make was, at my doctor, i had to go on a doc supervised diet for 3 months b4 being considered for approval through my insurance. well i was in the wrong frame of mind and i kinda went a little crazy to say the least. i didnt gain any weight, surprisingly, but i ate like it was my last meal(the meal you guys get - that i wont get)for all three months:( . my insurance has stipulations and i asked if i had to lose a set amount of pounds in order to get approved and they said no. my pre-op tests are being done tomorrow but i still have to stay on the shakes:( ....i am " cheating " but only minimally...like- ill have a piece of chicken once a day or some other not-so-bad-for-me food...and thats only because i felt empty and my sides started to hurt from lack of food. some of you may be mad at me for cheating so bad but i am a very dedicated person and i know myself! i can do this! it hurts so bad everyday to be fat, overweight, just a lil chunky, healthy, fluffy or whatever anybody else wants to scream out at me on the street:..( which they do almost everyday. my self esteem is ZERO! people treat you different when you are fat- thats so mean and unfair- i noticed that the fatter people are the more caring generous ones-thats purely my opinion- i know i am a kind, generous, loving person-and im fat...so people never get to find that out whoa-sorry about that im just venting- thanks for listening and please dont ban me:( > > > > > This i crap. Guest guest
Awh, I won't vote you off the island for that. As far as I am concerned we're all in this together, no matter who does the surgery. You are lucky your insurance pays. I tried a couple of years ago but I was borderline qualified only for " review and consideration " , had to loose 10% bf, but after that loss I was no longer qualified bcuz I didn't have a chronic disease. Duh, can't live on a liquid diet forever and I Dont Want to get a chronic disease. This time I didn't even bother, just bit it and scheduled. I'm going in on the 19th On Aug 2, 2011 12:59 PM, " W " <meganweir30@...> wrote:

You are taking the first steps to facing that you need and want the help. So keep posting. I wish you great success with your surgery and you weight loss journey. It will require good food choices and work and effort on your part. I think we all know and understand that we have been treated differently being fat--yes I say fat because that is just what I was. There are a lot of ways to say it, but I say it like it is. Please remember that the 1st month after surgery will be the hardest there is that you will ever have to do. Guest guest
I do not often post but I had to in this case.... Suzanne has been one of the most supportive persons on this board. There is no excuse for saying she should be ashamed for anything, when she has been incredibly kind, generous, and loving to all of the people on this board. If all you see is negative, then that is who you are....NOT who Suzanne is. - No one is responsible for your behavior but you. To try and place blame, judgment, and doubt to anyone on this board who is searching for help, looking for answers is hurting their opportunity for success and guidance in their own weight loss journey. If you think that the information on these boards is not correct, then please lovingly find the correct information and ask or post it in a kind manner....not with anger or judgment. Just ask and we can all help. Suzanne stated a 'maybe' in her answer, if that is the case, then all information is not GLOBALLY wrong. That is an incorrect assessment of the whole board in itself. This board is to help one another - if we are wrong once in a BLUE moon, this is not a race for perfection and being correct...only loving, kind, support, to all who seek help for weight loss surgery. Please use the same language of kindness that you would want for yourself - no one treated you with such disdain when you were seeking help. As long as Suzanne and Bipley are on these boards, you can bet everyone will be getting the MOSt expert advice out there! Hugs to all! Gail This i crap.
