Guest guest
, I think EVERYONE experiences hair loss with the band. My hairdresser turned me on to NIOXIN and it has really slowed that WAY down. Just google it online and order it...it's about $30 for both shampoo and conditioner but it's wayyyyyyyyy worth it! I have been using it since about a week after the band. Hope it helps! > > Has anyone experienced hair loss with the band? I have been watching my vitamin intake more carefully, but my hair is falling out! Guest guest
Thanks. It really makes me feel better to know it isn't just me! Hopefully if I 'up' everything by body will eventually adjust. Cyrena, your hair looks great short. I've been hiding behind mine for years. Like people won't notice my large rear if I have mid back length hair. Well, I guess it is part of the shedding process. Both the hair and the rear must go. Again I appreciate everyone. 245/207/145...seems like a lot Cyrena Weeks <cyrenaweeks@...> wrote: I did. I up'ed my vitamins and added vitamin B. I have heard the the hair loss has nothing to do with vitamins and then I read it has everything to do with vitamins. Then I heard it was due to protein, I don't know the answer I also know that anytime I have surgery the anesthesia causes my hair to feel like straw for a while. I had 2 surgeries last year so I know that was an issue along with the weight loss. Also, I don't know that anything over the counter really helps hair loss, but it is typically only for a short time. I had long hair - about 4 inch past my shoulders, and I was going crazy with hair all over the place. I run a bed and breakfast and cook meals for people and I was so nervous I was going to lose hair in someone's food. UGH. I cut my hair short- about chin length and didn't have near the issues I did when it was long. I know that sounds crazy but I also know of 3 other bandsters that did the same thing and said it was the magic trick they were looking for. So maybe head to the salon and try out a new do for a year or so and then grow it out. Guest guest
Hi a, As a matter of fact I have been experiencing the same thing. I had my sleeve done on 10/21/08. I asked my hair stylist about this on Friday when I was getting my hair cut and she didn't have much of an answer for me. So I had read on another site where someone had used--just the yoke of an egg and some nutmeg on her hair. I thought why not try it. So this morning I took two eggs and separated the yoke from the white and used the two yokes with about 1/2 tsp of nutmeg. I did mine while I was in the shower--just poured it all over my scalp and hair. I shampooed my hair first them rinsed my hair and scalp with the egg yoke and nutmeg and left it in for about 15 minutes and then washing it out with clear water. I didn't put any cream rinse on my hair at all and it was really nice and soft and very manageable. She said to do it once a week. My hair had felt a bit dry before I had done this. So far it feels great. It can't hurt your hair. This is the site that I read this information about hair loss. I also believe that in time you will stop having the hair loss. It is listed as Home Remedy for Hair Loss. http://vsgfaq.com/forums//index.php?showtopic=13 I hope this will help you. Take care, Suzanne In a message dated 1/3/2009 8:46:17 P.M. Guest guest
Mine is a bit thinner. I have always lost a great deal when I shampoo, but it has increased a bit. I am 6 months out and I think it has returned to normal. Hair is thickening back up. Make sure you take vitamins, get your protein in each day... no matter what!!!!! and you might want to take Biotin also. Guest guest
Hair loss happens and there isn't a darn thing you can do about it. It is a combination of anesthesia and change in diet. It happens in people getting an appendectomy, childbirth, WLS, etc. Just wait it out. Usually you can figure that bypass patients might or might not regrow their hair. Bands and sleeves regrow hair. I lost a TON of hair with my band, nothing with my sleeve. So in my case it was probably dietary changes.People swear by their own remedy but truth is, hair loss usually starts two months before you even notice it. The new hair growth pushes out the old hair. So when you start using extra protein, biotin, special shampoos, etc.... it really doesn't help. It will happen if it is going to happens and end when it ends. ( On Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 10:00 PM, <SuzanneSH@...> wrote: Hi a, As a matter of fact I have been experiencing the same thing. Guest guest
R U kidding me? Bipley is as smart as any nurse I know, and she of all people would want to correct someone if they were sharing incorrect information. Would she not? She has a specialty I do not have. I have one she does not have, that is all..no more, no less. I do find it very very interesting that you feel the need to rush to her defense. It has been my experience...Bipley is more than capable of handling herself. I simply stated my educated view point and politely asked she refrain from encouraging this myth. I am sure if I had said something asinine "the sleeve causes you to have hearing loss and your teeth to fall out" and she knew for a fact it was wrong, she would have no problem educating me on it. Everyone on this sight looks to Bipley for information based on good knowledge and authority. (i have done it too and with good reason). It was something that strikes a nerve with me and I shared it. I am sure she will survive what you perceive as a hit against her character. That was not how it was meant. Why don't we wait and see how she responds. With all due respect, Jen Hi a, As a matter of fact I have been experiencing the same thing. I had my sleeve done on 10/21/08. Guest guest
I don't think I am perpetuating a myth. When i was losing hair like crazy I went on a mega hunt for information. I was not low on protein, vitamins, biotin, etc. I was taking it all. I found six websites by anesthesiologists and I got my info from them. That was about 1.5 years ago. If the anesthesiologists are still saying it's true.. what can I say? Go to the source, don't scream at the messenger. ;o) On Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 4:34 PM, jen norwood <JenNorwood@...> wrote: OK Bipley, I " ve got to throw a yellow flag on part of this one. Guest guest
I disagree Bip. I am the source. My boyfriend is also an anesthesiologist (and also a source) and he laughed out loud when he read the post. I went straight to Barash, , and Mikhail---the true AUTHORITY (bibles) in anesthesia today and there is BIG, FAT zero regarding hair loss caused by anesthesia. We also just finished a complete literature search--and we are talking PUBMED--the medical library research system for all published medical research---and nothing. Nothing in the American Journal of AnesthesioIogy, Anesthesia and Analgesia, or JAMA either. I did a general google search again...and not surprising there are numerous sites that blame anesthesia. Interesting thing though, each one of those sites were hair loss forums, websites for hair transplants or products that claim to treat hair loss. None of them offered any scientific data or studies. Hmmm.... My point is you will find a ton of misinformation and web pages claiming that anesthesia is the culprit. I am clarifying that is wrong. There is no scientific data to support this. Anyone can make a web page and post incorrect information. (esp with the hopes of selling a product) I find it odd that the research can tell you that Sevoflurane can cause micrograms of fluoride ions in clinically insignificant amounts in renal cells of humans compared to toxic levels in rats....yet research has failed to identify any of the volatile anesthetics used today as a source of hair loss. I also find it interesting that thousands of anesthetics are given daily (we average 10-20 just between the two of us a day) and this is a "real side effect" yet no studies has ever been published stating this. Odd isn't? I do not think a non-scientific, non-medical library web search from 1.5 years ago is enough data to support your claim. I am surprised you are unable to admit you are wrong. How disappointing. But since you will not take my answer try the following website: netwellness.org This response is from an anesthesiologist Gareth S. Kantor, MD Assistant professor University Hospitals School of Medicine Case Western Reserve University. Anesthesia Does anesthesia cause hair loss? 09/25/2002 01:10PM Question: I`ve recently been experiencing a great deal of hair loss. First, this summer, specific circles of alopecia which seemed stress-related and responded to cortisone injections. Now I`m having more general loss and thinning - handfuls of hair when shampooing and otherwise. I was told this could be related to anesthesia from two foot surgeries (May and August). If so, when should this cease? Should I be concerned about other potential causes? Answer: I was asked by the dermatology experts to respond to your question. One form of hair loss after surgery is related to prolonged pressure over a particular area of the scalp, causing localized loss of hair in just that area. This is called pressure alopecia. It is rather uncommon, but is known to occur occasionally after very long surgical procedures (many hours) where the head is kept in one position. It can also happen in special circumstances, such as heart surgery, where blood flow throughout the body, including the scalp, may be decreased. A different kind of hair loss is caused by various kinds of acute stress, which can lead to generalized hair loss all over the scalp. This form of alopecia is known as telogen effluvium. Causes include acute illness (e.g. severe infection, major surgery and severe trauma), chronic illness (e.g. cancer, liver or kidney disease), hormones (e.g. pregnancy, underactive thyroid), changes in diet, and a large variety of medications, Although some people believe that anesthesia itself can cause hair loss, I could find no evidence linking any of the commonly used anesthesia medications to this problem. In fact, some anesthetic techniques, such as regional anesthesia, are shown to actually decrease the body¢s so-called stress response. However the stress of surgery itself is known to be a factor. And the recovery from surgery may be prolonged and stressful also. Guest guest
Jen...You are free to disagree all you wish, it's your right. When I was in Mexicali for my sleeve " my " source of information was Dr. Gutierrez. I asked him if I was going to lose my hair again with the sleeve like I did with my band. He said it was not likely as he wasn't using gas anymore but a combo of Diprovan and Sufentanil. It is his opinion that the gas used during anesthesia and the insult to the body was the culprit. Now, if I didn't trust my anesthesiologist I wouldn't have had him be my doctor. I thought the hair loss was due to fast weight loss, he said that was certainly possible but he also sees it in surgeries other than WLS and he believes (as of six months ago) that it is the combo of gas, insult to the body, change in lifestyle (I assume he meant diet), etc. Since the only thing he could control was the anesthesia issue, that is one thing he has changed. He explained that he did not change from gas to the IV drugs combo because of hair loss, it was for others reasons but the lack of hair loss was a benefit of changing anesthesia. So once again, stop screaming at the messenger and go to the source if you don't like the info. ;o)2009/1/4 jen norwood <JenNorwood@...> I disagree Bip. I also find it interesting that thousands of anesthetics are given daily (we average 10-20 just between the two of us a day) and this is a " real side effect " yet no studies has ever been published stating this. In fact, some anesthetic techniques, such as regional anesthesia, are shown to actually decrease the body's so-called stress response. However the stress of surgery itself is known to be a factor. And the recovery from surgery may be prolonged and stressful also. Be assured that future anesthetics are unlikely to contribute to your problem but be sure also to consult your physician for appropriate treatment and to rule out other causes of hair loss. Hope this helps mispell the myth. If you still insist you are correct, I would be thrilled to have you site your sources. jen Hi a, As a matter of fact I have been experiencing the same thing. Guest guest
I usually do not post any longer, just read and take in information. Why is it that things cannot just be said," hair loss can be caused by several issues". A lot of times it does occur after surgeries. Why is it just to prove and make people admit who is right/wrong. Bipley has been there with encouragement, butt chewing when people need it and an ear for those that are in distress. Why the world still comes down to you are wrong / I am right mentallity. Bipley has been at Dr. A's side many times. In fact she actually was in the OR with me.. i just hate the conflict to be over basically nothing. Hair loss does occur, it does get scarey that the feeling of going bald. If a person is told by a dr. that this is the cause, and it happens that time frame couldn't that be the problem. I do know that during the Dr Atkins phase of my weight struggle, i had hair loss. it would just be nice for those of us that are going through the weight loss journey could just get a long. Isn't there going to be the weight loss / hair loss. So those going through this process, should just know it is more than likely to happen. praying 2009 can be a peaceful one Hi a, As a matter of fact I have been experiencing the same thing. Guest guest
I currently watches a video on you tube about a female with the hair loss problem after having the bypass. The doc. had a specific name for it and they did something for her. The woman on you tube does weekly videos about her bypass and her name is amelia. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, My lost a lot of hair after about 2 month after the sleeve surgery. I already had thin hair and I really couldn't afford to lose any hair. So I did just like everyone else--yelled for help on this site. I found out that using Nixon Shampoo and Cream Rinse (you can find it at a lot of Hair Solons) really seemed to stop the loss of anymore hair and I still continue to use this shampoo and cream rinse. I also took Biotin and still continue to take it. I went and got my hair cut and it had been 7 months from my surgery, and my hair dresser said "You have all kinds of new hair coming back in." Right now my hair looks pretty bad. It is coming back in curly too--I don't know if anyone else ever had theirs come in curly. I will let it come in a little more and in a few months cut it again. It just looks thin still. I solved my problem and went out and got two cute wigs. Everyone is always telling me how well they like my new hair cuts--they have no clue I have a wig on. If I tell someone (my close friends) I have a wig on they don't believe me. So that is how I solved that issue. So for me after 7 months from when I had the surgery, I can say I noticed my hair returning, but it may be different for other everyone else. Guest guest
Hi Gloria, This was a wonderful pos--well saidt. Perfect for those people who are on the fence and can't make up their minds about a band or a sleeve. You will do just fine with the first month. It gets boring and you can do it. It is only 30 days out of your life and you can do that. Then life will be a whole lot better for you. Keep posting how you are doing. You would be surprise at all the people out there who never say much, but are out there reading everything that we all post. I use to be one of those! When I was trying to make up my mind what to do, I hung out on this board and just read everything. It was a way for me to educate myself. Guest guest
Jackie, I was in the same boat as you, pretty thick hair to start so I was like, oh well. Then it got worse and worse. I didn't go bald, but my solution was cutting my hair short. After that, it got A LOT better!!! Really, I would try it, if you haven't already. After that I let my hair go back out and it is super thick again.
