Guest guest
Hi Cyn - You (and / Fl) seem to have had the worst email issues. This morning I had a minor problem loading my emails and it is a bit frustrating. My husband's schedule's out of whack so we have had to walk of an afternoon over the last three days. We returned to our old walking path (for a change this week) on the esplanade at Point Vernon. I couldn't get over the dry, almost leafless condition of the tall gums and other native trees, palms and foliage. Many of them are dying from lack of rain. It seems Hervey Bay is in drought-mode so we sure could use some of your snow over here. Oh, Santa...please give me a white Christmas! lol I assume that the home exercise machine you bought is a treadmill. I would love one of those for the days when can't get away from work for us to go walking. I'm sure that being able to exercise in your own home will give you peace of mind. At your own pace whenever you feel like it and then you can rest after. I do hope you are feeling better today and every day from now on. I agree that losing a little weight could improve breathing. I need to do the same and for the same reasons. This morning I happened to be reading a small piece of research out of Mexico where children with asthma/lung conditions were tested. The researchers proved that eating more fruits and vegetables improved the children's breathing/lung function. So that is good news for those of us with breathing issues. Cyn, you mentioned the 02 and I remember you saying once that with emphysema a part of your lung has died. Hope I have remembered correctly...brainfog. My question is can that part of the lung ever regenerate again? Perhaps you know from your doctors or other research. Rest well and enjoy that new exercise machine. In my thoughts and prayers. Love & hugs Carlene > > Hi Carlene~~~Yes I heard from another group that is having problems > today too. So mine must be a combination of both. Guest guest
I was just thinking about you Cyn and I am glad you are okay. But sorry you are nursing a bad sinus headache. Glad your hubby's procedures went smoothly. Hope you don't get too tired just sitting at your pulmonary doctor's surgery tomorrow. It is beautiful weather in Hervey Bay. I caught up with a few personal jobs today. A bit of shopping to do this afternoon and maybe a late walk. Enjoy a pleasant, restful afternoon to you and everyone. Guest guest
I do believe, I've just had way too much on my plate and my IBS just kicked into gear and started bossing me around, lol. With the holidays, my son going away and issues here, I've just been very sick and the IBS has reacted to it all. I'm very worried about not being able to keep food down; if that continues i will go to my gastro and have that checked. Sometimes I think the testing is worse than the diseases themselves, lol. My son did leave last Tues., and I went a couple hours later with my daughter. Things happen for a reason and in this case it was a wonderful thing. We went to get his dorm key and they didn't have it for the dorm he was told he was going to be living in. We were sent to a woman in charge and she explained why the room was not availble, so I expressed that my son was worried about his roommates partying and drinking. doesn't drink, smoke, do drugs, nothing; of course, it's not surprising since he's seen his father drunk so many times, so he despises it. It just so happened that they had a couple of buildings that are called "dry buildings". There is no drinking allowing in the rooms at all, so s' face lit up when the woman mentioned this. He got so lucky, there was only 1 opening left. He then became so much more relaxed about that and his roommates are very nice and is getting along just fine with them. I just pray that he stays and gets his bachelors degree then he plans on getting his master's and doctrine where we live. My daughter is also in college and she'll be going off next year. It's going ok, we talk all the time, but I miss him so much, I go into his room and smell him, look out his window, just sit for a minute; I've never been away from my kids and it's only been me as their parent so it's extremely difficult for me. Ok I'm tired, going to stop for now, it's 3:35 here and I haven't slept at all yet, so going to try. It's 33 degrees out and it's very cold with a 10-20 mph winds; brrrrrrrrrr Thanks Carlene, hugs From: Carlene <carlene.grimshaw@...>Subject: Re: Hello everyone! Guest guest
I forgot to mention one of the most important things that had happened. While this is all going on with my IBS, at least I believe it's my IBS, I woke up one morning last week, with the worse pains in my chest and right arm! I thought, oh no I was having a heart attack and was instantly scared. I was alone and waited while lying down to see what was going to happen next. Since my IBS had been acting up, I knew that the possibility of it being pains from the stomach area was great, so I stayed calm and waited. The pain continued and I took a Nexium immediately and a couple of Tums and again, layed down and waited. Sure enough, the pain got better, not great but better and gradually was gone. That was very scary for the time it was happening; I do know that the biggest majority of patients that go into the ER fearing a heart attack is gas, plain and simple gas. The gas pains can get so painful that one does think it's a heart attack; I remember that when I had my C-sections, the pain would get so bad, that it would go up and into my neck. Anyway, I'm gonna try to get some sleep. Thanks for listening and asking how my son is. From: Carlene <carlene.grimshaw@...>Subject: Re: Hello everyone! Guest guest
- I am happy for you that everything went well in attending your son 's uni orientation day. How fortunate that he secured the last opening in a " dry building. " This will make his uni experience - especially his accommodation/room-mates scenario - much more enjoyable. It's a tough time when your child leaves the nest. I am sure it won't be long until he returns home for a weekend. And then you can enjoy catching up on his news each time. For now, I hope the IBS and food issues settle down. Take good care and have a peaceful, pleasant day. Guest guest
~~I am so sorry you are feeling so ucky! I know how IBS can get you down, in no time. I have had it before, and it is no party. I had let mine go too long and it turned into Ulcerated Colitis. Went to my gastro Dr and I am all better now. So don't let it go too long with out seeing your gastro Sr. I am sure your home seems empty without your son there with you. But if you get to talk to him each say that is nice for you. He was very lucky to get into the "dry house". I am sure you are much happier also. I will keep you with me in my prayers. Love & Hugs Cyn Boyd -- Re: Hello everyone! Guest guest
Cyn, you're so right when you say the IBS symptoms come on suddenly, wow to that! I know that stress plays a factor; what did you do to get it under control? I'm curious as to what worked for you. I'm not going to play with this one, too many things to go wrong. Not due for my colonoscopy til 2012, maybe he'll want to do one sooner, not sure, he had mentioned the possibility last time I saw him if my symptoms continue. I haven't been back to discuss this yet, but will make an appt, ugh, I just hate the thought of going through that procedure again, the preparation is the worst. I speak to my son, , several times a day and I just love it, he likes it more and more. He likes his roommates; they all have something in common-watching football and playing video games, lol. is the type that loves family and his home and doesn't like to leave it, so I'm so thankful that he's getting along and yes, that we found a "dry dorm"; what a relief! It goes to show, college kids can still have fun without being under the influence, then there's my daughter, lol; another story all together. will be home this coming weekend already and won't have to be back on campus until Wed., midday. Then a little over a month later is spring break, so I'll be seeing him alot. Thank you Cyn, I very much appreciate your prayer and regards. Guest guest
Hay ~~~ Whenever I get stressed the IBS starts up a little. After that last bout with it I take better care of myself now. I eat just plain rice, apples, and bananas. I drink plenty of water though; or I will get dehydrated. Mainly I try very hard to de=stress myself. I meditate, and try to not think about what stressed me to the point of running to the bathroom every 2 minutes. Gatorade will help your electrolytes; but it is so sugary I don't like to drink alot of it. Tea does help also. . Well it sounds as if your Son will be home alot in the nexxt few months. How far from you is the College? Guest guest
Nice to hear from someone who's so enthusiastic! Welcome! Hello Everyone! Â Hi everyone! I'm new, so thought I would introduce myself. My name is tte. I live in Alaska, and got my refurbished (NEW) Vitamix 5200 through Lea Ann last month. We LOVE it! I use it anywhere from two to six times a day, depending upon what I'm cooking...still getting used to the proper proportions, i.e. liquid to ice ratios. Have only had a couple of " YUK " concoctions, so that's not too bad! Have used a few things from the recipe book and keep a pen handy to tweak along the way more to my liking. Oh....before I go any further, I do want to wish Lea Ann a happy belated birthday!! I spent some time at your website again last night, and I'm glad I did because I was reminded of things not to do, that I had been doing! LOL! Depending on what I'm doing with the VM, I generally will just rinse with hot water in between uses - but always run with hot water and a couple drops of dish soap for two or three minutes when I'm done, then let it air dry. I use white vinegar a lot and will probably start adding a little of that too. The baking soda is also a good idea - and it will make the water feel a little " slimy " because it's a softener. (I use that and white vinegar in my laundry wash also). I made some carrot juice last week that was definitely a YUK moment - and I love carrot juice. Not sure what the deal was, but....oh well. I do know I need to pay more attention to the variable switch, because (hehehehe)....I've added things to soups to chop them up, and BAM! - it's mixed in. So too long, I know. Trial and error. Anyway...just wanted to say hi to everyone, and Lea Ann - thanks so much for this group, because I really do love my machine and want to use it to its full potential! Do have to say one thing: I had JUST bought a new Cuisinart food processor to replace my 20 year old one....and I haven't used it once since buying the Vitamix. Yikes! Guest guest
Hello tte, SO HAPPY to hear that you are enjoying your new Vitamix! (and thank you so much for ordering through me :-) Carrot juice is the one of the only things where you really need to strain the fiber from the juice in order to get the Sweet carrot juice taste and liquid texture that you are used to. Pureed raw carrots (which is what the VM does) are too fibrous and the fiber is not sweet tasting. You can puree the carrots in the VM then strain the juice out with a Nut Milk bag (a link to an inexpensive source for them is on the links page of our Group's website. On the soups, I'm sure you'll get it right next time - be sure to start at variable 1 - you might not need to go any higher! I have to say that I'm happy to hear that you are using your VM like a food processor - it is one of the ways I have a hard time convincing people to use their VMs for! Thanks again for your enthusiastic and informative first post! :-) Blessings,Lea Ann SavageSatellite Beach, FL(321) 773-7088 (home)(321-961-9219 (cell)))><'>www.VitamixLady.comwww..com<))>< Hello Everyone! Guest guest
Hello Anni - welcome to our forum where I hope you get all the help and support you need. Do I take it that you are a Spanish citizen now living in the UK? Have you asked your GP whether s/he would honour a prescription for thyroid medication from your Spanish Doctor? For the majority of doctors in the UK, they refuse to work with the British Thyroid Association's recommendation of not diagnosing or treating a patient who's TSH was returned anywhere within a reference range of 0.5 to 10.0, They usually work with a TSH range of 0.5 to 5.0 or around about there so it is quite likely your doctor will do the same. Go to our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk and click on 'Hypothyroidism' in the Menu, and then click on 'Symptoms and Signs'. Check your symptoms and signs against what is shown there, and write down a full list of what you are actually suffering. On the same piece of paper, write down also the blood test results you would like to be done. These would be the full thyroid function tests which would include TSH, free T4, free T3, and tests to see whether you have TPO or TgAb antibodies to your thyroid. The latter is especially important if you have members of your family with a thyroid or autoimmune condition. Ask also for the following blood tests: ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc. If any of these are low in the reference range, your own or any thyroid hormone supplement will be unable to be fully utilised at the cellular level until whatever is low, is supplemented. Also take y our basal temperature for 4 or 5 mornings before you get out of bed and write these down also. This is something you can inform your GP about at a later date. If your temperature is less than 97.8debgrees F (or 36.6 degrees C), this is an indication your metabolism is running too slow and could well be because you are hypothyroid. Ask on the paper for your GP to refer you to an endocrinologist of your choice - one who understands about thyroid disease and does not have his speciality in diabetes - as most of them do. Ask for all this information/requests to be placed into your medical notes. Good luck with your appointment today and I just hope this message doesn't reach you too late. Let us know how you got on. Luv - Sheila What made me start looking at hypothyroidism again was that my blood pressure was high 170/110 yet my heart rate was 48! Which I found very odd because when I used to be very physically fit, my heart rate never dropped past 60-55. Doctors have been finding it difficult to find my heart rate lately. I'm seeing my GP tomorrow, actually today and looking for information from the files. Wish me luck! One of my concerns is as I'm not overweight, I'm worried I won't be paid attention. I have gained weight but it's not a lot for most people, just for me. I used to do lots of sport and never put on much weight from fat. Now, I'm jiggly :-) Another question: would my GP or NHS honour a foreign prescription or diagnosis? I know the upper ranges in the UK is 10 for TSH. In Spain it's 0.35-4.5 or 5.5. So if I had figures above 5, in Spain I would get treated, in the UK I wouldn't. Anni
Guest guest
Hi, thanks for your info. I searched the forums and wrote down a list of the tests I wanted but I was refused. I'm Spanish living in Bristol, UK. My TSH was 1 apparently and the GP said the range was 0.5-5. I wasn't expecting that figure of 1. The last time I had my TSH tested was in 2009 and it was normal then! But that was 2 years ago. This is 2011. Sheesh. And because the TSH was normal, the lab wouldn't test for T3 and 4. I also asked for B12, he said that normal as well, he woudn't say what it was. I find it weird that they won't give you your records and that I have to pay for them. In Spain, you always get a copy of any test. I got scheduled for another blood test later today. I will ask the nurse what I'm being tested for. On the other hand, I was low on Vitamin D and was prescribed 20,000 IU. I'm always anemic and always having problems with my iron. It took me months, actually 2 years, before I got tested for Vitamin D. Ha! My blood pressure is through the roof. I was so frustrated that I broke down in tears. I don't know what to do now. I feel like I'm choking all the time, my eyes hurt, my body hurts, my brain hurts, my eyelashes are falling out, and I haven't plucked my eyebrows in months because they are so wispy. I have to use 30% glycolic acid and pumice scrub on the skin of my legs because they are so rough and wrinkly, and lizardy. I;m tired of feeling tired. I think I will write a letter as I felt I wasn't explaining myself properly. Thanks a lot for your advice! Guest guest
Anni - your GP CANNOT withhold your blood results or access to the information that is in your medical notes. These belong to you. See http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Managingyourorganisation/Informationpolicy/Patientconfidentialityandcaldicottguardians/DH_4084411 I would not mess with this GP - he sounds quite uncaring. Go straight in there by writing a letter to him and send a copy to the Head of Practice also, asking that the letter be placed into your medical notes for possible future reference. First, you need to list all of your symptoms and signs. Check yours against those in our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk under 'Hypothyroidism' in the Menu. You will find these in the drop down Menu 'Signs and Symptoms'. Next, take your basal temperature for 4 or 5 days before getting out of bed and list these if they are less than 97.8 degrees F or 36.6 degrees C. Next, list any members of your family who have a thyroid or autoimmune disease as it can run in families. Next, list the FULL thyroid function tests you need to be done which must include TSH, free T4, free T3 and tests to see whether you have antibodies to your thyroid. Next, list certain mineral and vitamin tests you need to see whether any of these are low in the reference range. If your GP tries to tell you that there is no connection between low levels of these and low thyroid, I have cited some references to the medical science to show exactly what the connection is - so copy these to him before he has a chance to argue. Low iron/ferritin: Iron deficiency is shown to significantly reduce T4 to T3 conversion, increase reverse T3 levels, and block the thermogenic (metabolism boosting) properties of thyroid hormone (1-4). Thus, iron deficiency, as indicated by an iron saturation below 25 or a ferritin below 70, will result in diminished intracellular T3 levels. Additionally, T4 should not be considered adequate thyroid replacement if iron deficiency is present (1-4)). 1. Dillman E, Gale C, Green W, et al. You do not have to tell the GP why you want these results and ref. ranges. Next, tell your GP that as you are continuing to suffer symptoms and signs, which you feel are getting worse, that you wish for a referral to an endocrinologist who has a speciality in thyroid, rather than an endocrinologist with a speciality in diabetes, who often know little to nothing about thyroid disease. I will send you a list of doctors recommended by some of our members. You can be referred to such a consultant outside of your area so don't let your GP try to tell you otherwise. Don't take the letter with you to the surgery , send it in the post addressed specifically to this doctor and the Head of Practice. Doctors take a lot more notice of the written word rather than face to face consultations. Remember to ask for your letter of requests to be placed into your medical notes, not forgetting to keep a copy for yourself. Good luck Anni - and remember, these doctors are being paid to make us better - so don't let this GP mess around with you anymore. Meanwhile, I would do what I could to get the 24 hour salivary adrenal profile and the test to see if you have candida antibodies. Check our FILES section and scroll down to the FOLDER ' Genova Diagnostics' and you will see that you can get a good discount on these tests by being a member of TPA. Guest guest
Hi Anni i read this book at the weekend, and in it the author said he thought ADHD was linked to hormones. just mentioning it in case you find it helpful: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Miracle-Bio-identical-Hormones-Fibromyalgia-Osteoporosis\ /dp/0977668320/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8 & coliid=I2WDB5879PE49G & colid=3C4Q335HSOTQI in dr platt's own words: " I approach the condition of ADHD from the point of view that its underlying cause is hormonal imbalance. Please understand I am aware such a contention is extremely controversial. " http://www.drplatt.com/press/pharmacy_review.htm " Dr. Platt loves progesterone and he does an excellent job in explaining its indications, benefits, uses and dosing. He discusses the use of progesterone in women and men. This is the first book I have seen which discusses the use of progesterone in men as well as the relationship between estrogen dominance and prostate cancer. This is also the first book that I have seen which discusses the use of progesterone in children for ADD, ADHD and insulin resistance. Dr. Platt uses progesterone for numerous indications including weight loss, diabetes, insulin resistance, post-partum depression, infertility, ADD, ADHD, migraines, fibromyalgia, cholesterol, thyroid imbalance, osteoporosis, menopause, andropause and more. He also discusses the use of bio-identical estrogens, DHEA, testosterone, thyroid hormones and human growth hormone. " i have read that it's rarely just one hormone that's imbalanced. just wondered if this might help you. chris > > Hi, I'm new here and have recently begun looking at hypothyroidism. > > I have ADHD and have been having problems with the medication not working adequately or so I thought. I am scheduled for a sleeve with Dr A on September 15th. Sept's gonna be a big month for me! I'm so excited, nervous, etc, but mostly I wish it would get here already!! LOL! I am 5' 3 " and I currently weigh 220. I would love to be about 130. I'm hoping this surgery will give me the tools in which to get there. I'm willing to do what ever it takes. My insurance does not pay for any kind of weight loss surgery, so I am self pay. I was thrilled to find such a wonderful doc that I could afford. People as me if I am nervous going to Mexico, but I'm really not. I trust the doctors here and I feel I am in good hands. So I am flying in to San Deigo on Sept 14th and having my sleeve on the 15th. Anyone else have these dates?
