Alana,

I am truly surprised that your workouts sap your energy for the rest of the

day... most people gain more energy from working out. I had the same amount to

lose as you do when I started and I do remember being pretty tired in C1, but if

you do your workouts consistently I am confident that your energy will increase.

Do you workout in the morning? Maybe try switching things around a bit. Are

you getting enough sleep at night? Taking a multivitamin, etc?

No Energy

Hello,

I am in my second 12 weeks of the body for life plan. I only lost 4

lbs the first 12 weeks, but I went down 4 points on my BMI and am a

lot stronger. I was motivated by some major sciatica and back

problems. This 12 weeks I am trying to do better on portions and not

go wild on the free day (although I won't talk about this past

weekend). I have a lot of weight to lose -- maybe 70 to 75 lbs. My

problem is after I work out I have no energy for anything else for the

rest of the day. Any suggestions for me?

Alana,

I understand where you're coming from with the out-of-control free

days. I've been dealing with the same problem. No matter how much I

tried to justify it, I finally had to admit that eating 1000s of cals

on my free day (or having the free day turn into a free week) was

completely sabotaging my goals. It's necessary to create a weekly

calorie deficit, and that's just not going to happy without portion

control on the free day.

As for your lack of energy, this could be because you still are

overweight, and it's hard on your body to carry the extra pounds

around. If you've added extra cardio workouts to your routine, cut

them out. If you're going by the book, I would say check your meals,

make sure you're eating enough and getting enough protein. Also, eat

a meal right after your weight workout. It's best to wait an hour

before eating after your cardio for max fat loss, but if you have no

energy, you should eat right after your cardio, too, and have a bit

of extra carbs at that meal. (And make sure you're getting enough

carbs throughout the day; low-carb diets are notorious for sucking

all the energy out of people.)

Also, and this is really obvious, are you getting enough sleep? You

might also think about getting your thyroid checked if nothing else

works. One thing you don't want to do is load up on those " fat

burning " pills; they'll make you jittery and jumpy; it's a fake

energy, and you'll feel a lot worse once their effect wears off.

Take care.

That's respectable progress, Alana :) Down 4 on the BMI :) You might

consider moving your workouts to later in the day. And you also might not be

eating enough to sustain your body through your workouts. Is it just the

weight training that leaves you wiped out? Or the Cardio? Or both? It's

been recommended to me by a trainer on another list to eat before and after

weight training to feed your muscle growth. For the first 6-10 weeks I

hadn't done that and my weight training was leaving me pooped. Now I eat 1/2

hour before and 1/2 hour after and it has really helped my energy level.

Congrats again :)

The work outs Sap my energy too... I used to try and do the Cardio first

thing in the AM but found I was kinda shot the rest of the day and it made

getting out of the house in the morning for work a lot harder on me...so I

quickly switched to doing it in the evening like I was with the weight

trainings.

I eat my last " meal " at work around 2:30 or before... then I generally get

home around 6:00pm and head Right downstairs to the weights or the bike. that

meant I was not resuming meals again until 7:20 or 8:00 pm for myself..then

I was getting 2 more in..sometimes for a total of 5 a day instead of 6.

I went through 8 weeks of challenge 1 not losing anything..very frustrating.

And I was exhausted.

But...I am Hypothyroid..and Mine is still unregulated..so I know that plays a

major role in it...

I have had more success since I decided to change the diet portion of the BFL

to really cut down on the carbs and to choose only whole foods instead of

drinks and bars for any meals and to maybe not worry so much about the 6

small meals a day, just to eat cleanly and make very healthy choices of what

I do eat... Lots of fish as my protein and veggies and things that are in

the meduim to low glycemic categorties only for me now....leafy salads that

are more nutritous than iceberg lettuce ( even if less tasty and more biter,

lol) and I let my portion salads be much more filling. Since I'm not worrying

myself over the 6 small meals part of it. I made this change because I

suspect I have an insulin resistance problem. I intially had a wonderful

sucess after I made this change, but it's slowed down quite a bit now.

That's ok. I'm still Plugging away at it. I Might not have my diet part of

my BFL routine worked out yet...but It's going to be for life, so I've got

time for tweaking.

Dehydration can cause tiredness, so drink water constantly ~ sleep is

the usual overlooked factor, you do tend to need more when you

exercise daily ~ I find an brisk afternoon or evening walk usually

gets me kickin again (percieved tiredness can sometimes just be

boredom in disguise) ~ eating more protein wakes me up whilst

overconsuming carbs makes me tired (check your portions) ~ and

instead of doing less exercise as someone suggested I would recommend

more of the recreational kind on top of your daily intense session ~

that walk I mentioned, walking the dog, playing with the kids at the

park, riding your bike around the neighborhood, there's lots to do to

keep active instead of flopping on the couch after you go to the

gym! ;-)

Bec - Just the opposite for me ... I don't think I'd have the energy to do my

cardio late in the day! lol I try and down whenever I wake up which could be at

9, 10 or 12! lol Once I do it however I have a lot of energy!

When I did my first challenge a year ago, I did cardio once or twice in the

morning and felt like it zapped my energy all day (I teach high school...you

need all the energy you can muster!). During challenge 3 I started getting up

early and doing cardio and weights and I am so energized I put my high school

students to shame (and I am 53). I would say keep doing the cardio at least

in the am and you should soon feel an incredible energy burst that stays with

you all day. a

Becky,

You sound just like me in the energy department. I think you're on

the right track with the low glycemic food. I teeter between eating

carbs that make me sleepy (bread, rice, potatoes) and not eating

enough carbs (which makes me tired). It seems like if I eat plenty of

veggies and three servings of fruit (strawberries, blueberries,

cantalope, raspberries, & frozen banana in workout shake) that I do

OK energy wise and BFL wise. Keep it up and look forward to the end

of C1. You can do it!

Thanks Jan. I'm going to be getting in to the Dr here very soon and will

probably be getting a referl to an endocrinoligist...so I hope to have

something more solid to go on than my hit or miss hunches pretty soon.

,

Autumn is usually more tired when she's sick. That said, she's tired every

day when she gets home from preschool. She's the first one to fall asleep

for naps, bedtime, etc. & the last one to wake up.

I think fatigue/low energy level is just normal for PID kids. I don't know

if you're going to be able to get a correlation or not--but if you do,

please let me know.

When someone tells me they lack energy, my first thought is to

look at your diet. Could you post a sample day menu? We can see

if you are eating too little or too little of one thing and

too much of another.

This isn't normal DeDe, you should really see a doctor. Your body could be

giving you a warning for something that could be seriously wrong. Get a full

physical from your family doctor. Tell him/her your symptoms and get the

peace of mind of finding out it is nothing or that it is something, but you

caught it in time.

When you start to feel lethargic, a few things could be the cause.

Too little calorie intake or too little carbs. You may want to track this for a

couple of days

and see where you are at exactly.

A few of the symptoms you have outlined point towards overtraining as a

possibility. When

is the last time you took a week off of training? Do you do BFL as-is or have

you added

anything on top?

If I were you, I'd first look at my diet. Otherwise, some off time may be

required.

DeDe,

I have been meaning to write something similar for some time now. I am feeling

the exact same way! I had tons of energy during the first year of doing this

(lost 60 lbs), but now I am really struggling. I feel very burned out. I also

seem to be very emotional all the time. And no, I am not pregnant. I am starting

to think that I am depressed, because I cannot seem to get out of this and I

have never experienced this kind of fatigue. I started taking St. 's Wort

about a week ago but have notice zero change in my energy level. I'm hoping you

get some feedback that I can use too! Thanks for writing.

Make sure you are eating enoug. Too low of calories will cause you to be

lethargic.. so will

not having enough carbs. Make sure you are meeting your ratios, you may want to

try and

eat a little more or depending on where your carb intake is, increase it. BFL

is good as a

baseline but some folks need more calories and different ratios than others.

I was feeling this way and the doctor found out my thyroid isn't working.

I have hypothyroidism which is where you can experience abnormal

fatigue, hair loss, and weight gain. My thyroid was at 11.75 and they

are trying to get it down between .4 and 1.00. I haven't noticed any

weight loss (darn it all!) but I have more energy, I am overall more

balanced mood wise and I don't think I will go bald in the near future

since starting on synthroid.

Many things can cause tiredness so don't let your doctor brush you off I

think they have a tendency to do that because fatigue is such a vague

symptom.

That sounds like how I was for awhile... I am taking St. 's

Wort too. It has helped. I was taking it according to directions

about " 6 " capsules a day. I myself felt a little burnt out for

awhile... Mostly because I had to change things up a little... I

quit karate for awhile because I was burnt out, changed my workout

routine, quit my job, left school for awhile, spent more time with

my family and etc.... So now I am getting back on the bandwaggon.

Just take some time for yourself and change things up a little.
