Guest guest
Nooooo, that's why I went to Dr. Aceves. He's the best of the best for revision surgeons. He did my revision, best thing I ever did.I feel for you, when a band has gone bad it's hell living with it. It affects every single aspect of your life, emotional, social, personal relationships, employment issues, everything. Absolutely everything. You'll be shocked at the difference in quality of life with a sleeve when a band isn't your thing. I've been in your shoes, go for it!On Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 12:28 PM, katherine_xo01 <katherine_xo01@...> wrote: Hi Everyone, I'm . I was banded in 06 by another surgeon and now I am currently looking to Dr A for a revision to sleeve. I've had a lot of band intolerance over the past few years so I imagine the scar tissue is significant. Has anyone gone for a band to sleeve revision and not been able to get it done due to too much scar tissue? Thanks for your help!
Guest guest
Hi , thanks for responding and understanding. All that you said applies to my life with the band! I've been reading up on revision and keep coming across people with a lot of band scar tissue that makes the sleeve difficult to perform. So these patients wake up with no band, but have to go back a 2nd time to get sleeved! Can the dr see the full extent of scar tissue with barium swallow or endoscopy prior to surgery? > > Nooooo, that's why I went to Dr. Aceves. He's the best of the best for > revision surgeons. Guest guest
No, he won't be able to see it until he can visualize it in surgery. The people that wake up with no band and no sleeve (assuming they have no slip or erosion) are going to doctors that simply are not revision surgeons. It's beyond their skill level. There is a doctor in Mexico that claims a gazillion sleeves but it's not true, he doesn't have near the experience he claims. He is one that sends people home asking them to come back for a 2nd surgery because he can't do it. It's beyond his skill level. Dr. Aceves can do it. We ALL have a lot of scar tissue, your body encapsulates the entire band in adhesions. The worry for surgeons is when you have had lots of various abdominal surgeries, that makes it even harder. But, that's why you go to a good revision surgeon. Not all surgeons are revision surgeons. Just because they can do a sleeve does not mean they are good at revisions. If you have a slip or erosion then it needs to be done in two parts, band removal and then come back for a sleeve. But if you don't have huge amounts of swelling or erosion Dr. Aceves can do it in one surgery. When a band goes bad weird things become a way of life. Keeping things to vomit in such as cups, bags, etc. You quit going to lunch with friends because you don't know if it will work or not. You quit going to social events where you have to eat, you don't eat lunch in front of others at work, you wake up every morning trying to figure out if it is a food day or liquids day. When you revise to a sleeve you slowly realize just how much the band has affected your life and changed how you do things. I absolutely promise you, your quality of life skyrockets after revision when you have band intolerance. Guest guest
M, thanks for responding. I definitely know that not all surgeons are on equal footing in the OR when it comes to revisions. This would be the #1 reason I'm not returning to my band surgeon even though he says he can do it. I believe he is a good surgeon just not for my revision. I got a complete unfill on Friday. Living the experiences you went through with the band, you personally know the elation I'm experiencing right now at just feeling NORMAL again!! I'm still anticipating having to run to the bathroom, not eating in front of people, choosing only mushy type food---all a thing of the past, Thank God! I'm giving my stomach due rest (Nina also said it's more of a swelling issue than scar tissue for revision) and saving $$ for my revision which I think will be sometime in the Fall. I'm very excited to start this next chapter and get this remaining weight off with the sleeve that the band was unable to do. > > > > > > > > > Hi , thanks for responding and understanding. Guest guest
I know exactly what you are going through. When I was banded I could either eat a whole steak dinner in one sitting or I couldn't keep saliva down. It was hard, very hard. Band intolerance is no way to live. I still say that in a war if we want to torture the enemy band them and over fill their bands. ;o) I suspect you don't even realize the difference in your life today vs. before band intolerance kicked in. It's a gradual change and as time goes on after revision you realize all the differences that you used to take for granted. Get the revision, you'll love the sleeve!!!When I was banded I thought I was rare, I thought most people did not have the problems I had to the same degree. Now I realize there are lots of us out there. The band just wasn't for me. On Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 11:02 AM, katherine_xo01 <katherine_xo01@...> wrote: M, thanks for responding.
