Xylitol, also called wood sugar or birch sugar I think is also referred to

as an alcohol sugar. I am not sure on the comparisons or the relation to Z

Sweet. A few people have tried Xylitol but said that it was terrible. Nice

pricey experiment. You may have to o several cycles to see if Z Sweet

really works for kombucha as the first cycle or two the kombucha may just

feed on the remaining " real " sugar.

I am on metformin ER 2g/day and drink about 500ml KT daily, . My KT

is made with half sugar/half agave so that any residual sugar has a

fairly low glycemic index. I also brew it for three weeks to

eliminate as much sugar as possible. So far, there doesn't seem to be

any significant rise in my glucose levels. Lots and exercise and low

carb meals help a lot.

There is a new zero calorie sweetener on the market that seems

promising. Z Sweet, which is pure Erythritol, a sugar alcohol. I am

not sure it can be used for KT. Any ideas about using sugar alcohols

for KT? BTW, this stuff is not like Splenda, which is an artificial

chemical sweetener. Erythritol is a natural sweetener. It is a little

expensive, about $5/pound in quantity. I paid $13 for 1.5 pounds in

the Wegmans supermarket.

I was wondering how many on the forum had diabetes before the lap

band procedure and if it has resolved or improved since having the

surgery done?

I am still considering all options and in addition to loosing weight

I am hoping for improvement or resolution of type II diabetes.

Do you attribute the loss of your diabetic condition to the weight loss only, or to weight loss and the band's restriction and unknown factors because of the restriction?

I'm just curious because I'm type 2 and it is ruining my business besides my health.

Its great that all your blood sugars have normalized due to the weight loss. I believe that you will always be considered diabetics no matter how well your sugar is controlled and must continue to have special care for your feet and eyes. Being controlled with just diet is the goal of all diabetics, but you must not forget that diabetes is a lifelong condition and must be treated as such. Keep up the great work!!

I have been reading where diabetics that get gastric bypass resolve

the diabetes in a few days after surgery potentially because the

absorbion in the small bowel changes with food entering at a lower

place in the intestines and triggering a reaction in the cells

causing the pancreas to excrete more insulin.(at least this is how I

interpreted what I read) I posted the question about diabetics with

having the lap band done if it also resolved diabetes after surgery.

I am trying to decided on the best procedure to fix 2 problems weight

and diabetes with the lowest risk. Ususally what is posted suggested

weight loss was the key however with the bypass the diabetes was

resolved in a few days so weight loss alone cannot be the only key.

Hi,

My major reason for getting the band was diabetes. I am down 20 lbs in my 3 weeks, but I still had a blood sugar of 180 this morning and that was after 6 miles of walking yesterday. StilI, I don't consider a diet of mushies to be the optimum for a diabetic, and I expect to see significant improvement when I get to solids and can move to the meats and veggies. I still have great confidence that my diabetes will improve or resolve, and considering that my average on my last hba1c was 300, I suspect I am already improving. Just the same, I am anticipating that it will be a journey to get my sugars down to normal. I appreciate the encouraging words from the improved diabetics on site. Jerry Heath

Hey Diane,

You may or may not have read what I posted a few days ago. I too am a diabetic and I had lap-band surgery on May 6, 2008 and I have not taken a pill for my blood sugar since surgery. I don't know exactly how the surgery corrects a persons sugar levels so fast, and it may not cure every ones, but it did mine. My main reason for having the surgery is becasue diabetes runs in my family and an Aunt lost her leg because of her sugar. I didn't want to go thru that. But I feel so much better, I am down about 20 lbs since surgery and I have so much more energy. I need to loose between 30 and 40 more pounds, I'm not sure, yet what will be my best weight. I have stopped taking my medicine for high blood pressure and high cholestrol too, My blood pressure was 135/120 this morning. Not exactly perfect but I believe it will come on down as my weight comes down.

Hang in there,
