Guest guest
You're probably off having the fill right now! The firt fill depends on many factors that the doc should be assessing -weight loss, eating skills, any eating trouble, size of band, your fat distribution (apple vs pear shape) and much more. In the smaller bands (9.75 and 10 cm) the first fill is aanywhere from 0.3 cc to 2.3 or so. Uusually about 0.5-1.0 cc In the 11 cm band, about 2-4 cc In the VG, 4-5.5. The first 3.5 cc simply fills the tubing, so is not a fill. Anything OVER that first 3.4 cc is the real FILL. With the new AP band, the first fill seems to be about 3-4 cc. With the largest AP band that holds 14 cc, the few first fills I'm aware of have been around 5 cc. lots to learn yet about theese new AP bands! But the skill of the surgeon and the band aftercare program will be very critical to your success. With a less experienced doc, you'll have much more reaponsibility yourself to learn things and discuss options, and even help the doc learn. They should be giving you clear written instructions about the fill - what is a good one vs what is too much and dangerous. We should never by trying to keep a too-tight fill. Let us know how you do today! Sandy R > > ok.. so I go in for my first fill today. It concerns me that my > doctor's office (mostly bypass, I think I was the 20-something > lapband. Guest guest
Turns out I have the 10 cm band.. or is it 10 cc? I don't know. Anyway, we did 1 cc today. He gave me a choice of numbing or not numbing. He said " I'd go without numbing. It's 2 sticks versus 1 " Then I saw the needle, promptly told him he was insane and said I'd be numbed up thanks. He ended up sticking me a few times with the giant needle because he couldn't find the port. It was the physicians assistant, and he's extremely capable and I like him a lot, but like I said.. they're primarily gastric. I am not sure if I feel much of a difference yet, but I took your advice and stayed around for a couple of hours to make sure it was ok. (It's out of town) I told them today that when I finish my master's in counseling in a year and a half that I'm coming back to do their lapband aftercare, since I have enough credits to have a minor in undergrad in nursing as well. I can do the support for lap patients after since everyone in his office, including himself, has had gastric. They don't realize yet that it's not the same. The PA said they'd probably need someone by then. haha. I also told them about how I had sharp shooting pain in my shoulder 5 days post op, and when I called that they told me it was gas pain. Gas X and everything else didn't help, but that I had found info online (here) that it can be referred pain from overeating (drinking, as it were). I thought they should know that. They weren't sure if they should believe me or not. I'm going to gather together a bunch of info and take it back for my next fill in November. No sense in having the lap patients after me suffer > > > > ok.. so I go in for my first fill today. Guest guest
Oh sweetie, first mistake was looking at the fill needle! hehehe My doc didn't offer to numb and I just went with it and was SHOCKED that I didn't feel a thing when he did the fill. If you can muster the courage, next fill try it without the numbing. Guest guest
I have had about 10 fills and have never been numbed I was not offered by my Dr and I have never felt any pain. even when he had to poke about three times to find the port. I bet the numbing hurts way worse than the fill without numbing. Ales RNY 7/11/02 Revision Banded 10/27/06 Re: first fill Turns out I have the 10 cm band.. or is it 10 cc? The gas being referred to is the nitrogen they use to inflate you during the surgery, but that is gone long before 5 days. -- Best regards, Dan mailto:honu@... Guest guest
Hi Congrats on your weightloss and your first fill! It IS possible to get enough restriction on just one fill. My husband went with me to Mexicalli for our first fill, he is now at goal with just the one! I had to have one more and am 10lbs or so away...so think positive! Guest guest
Billie...Are you sure that was fluoro or was it ultra sound? With fluoro you drink barium and it's a moving xray. With ultra sound they put goo on your stomach and slide a wand looking thing through the goo. Guest guest
Billie, I have had two fills from Dr. Campos/ . They have you standing on a platform and the fluroscope comes in to your port. They do the fill and have you drink the Barium to see the flow pattern. It was most professional. Don't know if I should have a third fill but I will definately go back to Mexicali. Dr. Campos varies the amount of the fills based on the size band you had installed.Jerry Gerovac DOB 07-04-2007 First fill Stacie and I went and got our first fills. Guest guest
I have gotten 2 fills by Dr. Campos. The first one was about 1.4cc and I really didn't notice much of a difference. I had kind of reached a plateau and was able to eat almost anything. I then went back about 1 1/2 months later in Nov. and got another 1.5 cc. This was the one that did it. I almost needed an unfill but just waited it out and got used to eating much smaller amounts and picking better foods. I have been losing pretty quickly but feel great so don't want to change anything. I do get stuck pretty easily but just have to be really careful and listen to my body tell me its full! If I do get stuck and start to PB I have to put myself on clears for about 24 hours and then I seem to be ok after that. This has taught me to be very careful. I also have become very faint during each of my fills. I don't know why this is but maybe standing up with a needle in my stomach does it. I thought maybe being NPO for the 6 hours before may have something to do with it also. So, if I don't have to get another fill anytime soon that is good. Good Luck! Guest guest
Helena, I'm really sorry you had such a bad experience. It should never be like this. In experienced hands, fills are no more than a quick prick. You also have every right to ask for some numbing medication first and i personally recommend thjis for at lkeast the first fill. then, we can relax with no pain, even if hey have yo poke a bit to get into the port. First fills are not given routiely at 6-8 eeks, but only if needed. If we're losing as we are, there is eally no need fo a fill - why mess wih what is working? We are never trying to lose as fats as possibl, and getting unneeded fills often messes things up and TOPS weight loss if wecan no longer eat well. I'd urge you to continue to learn and follow the band rules and guidelines, (as you obviously are) and consider getting a fill only when you have had no loss for more than 3-4 weeks. Those are the general guidelines, among others. You'll learn more about fills from the Fill documents in the files here, if you're interested. And I never felt a thing, from what my Dr said, they do the first fills under fluoro because its easier for them to tell where the port is exactly. -- Re: first fill Helena, I'm really sorry you had such a bad experience. Guest guest
It's very true that the deeper ports are best found and filled under fluoro - the port shows up like a target and is hard to miss. FAR fewer tubing punctures this way. but, still, every fluoro involves radiation, and NO radiation is totally safe. I would not want to be getting, for instance, 8 fills and unfills a year with radiation with every one of them. depending on the technique of the doc (very good to very poor) , there can be considerable radiation scatter right to the ovary area which is not safe at all. Surgeons often are not trained with radiation, and do not take accepted precautions. i have never seen one wear a radiation badge, for instance, to calculate the radiation exposure THEY are getting. Guest guest
That is great. I don't go anywhere for fills and any type of aftercare other than Drs. A & C. Good decision! On Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 7:49 PM, eeliegirl <eelie@...> wrote: I'm getting an early birthday present!! :oD My folks are making up the difference between me getting a fill semi-locally and going back to Mexicali, so I get to have my first fill with Dr. A/Dr. C on April 19. Guest guest
Hi, I read your note that you are having your 3rd. fill and that it had been a couple of months since you lost any weight. I am pretty much in the same boat. I am going down this Friday for my 3rd fill. I have lost 40lbs. and then just stopped. Only good thing I can say is that I haven't gained it all back. Do you have the large band? I do, and I already have 5cc. I don;t know how much of a fill I will get this time but I am tired of not losing....especially when you read that others are dropping it with .7cc (for example). Best of luck to you and I hope that we both start losing............. terrina bell <terrinabell@...> wrote: Hi , I will be there for a fill also. Guest guest
Lou, your first fill will not be a problem. They will take great care of you. It is the later "refining" fills that seem to catch you unaware. Guest guest
Hi Lou!!!The biggest problem with fills is that people don't follow the post fill diet. They *think* they can bump up the diet so they do and then they barf. The trick to fills is you HAVE to follow the post fill diet. You HAVE to let the swelling decrease before eating thicker foods or solids. If you don't let the swelling go down you are in for problems. It becomes a cycle, you are swollen due to the fill, you eat solids and barf, then you think the fill was too tight. It wasn't, the post fill diet was not followed. The person goes back to liquids, doesn't barf on liquids and tries solids and barfs. The more barfing, the more swelling. Then they are sure they are too tight. Happens to most everyone in the beginning. Follow the diet and the fill won't be an issue. On Thu, May 1, 2008 at 7:11 PM, Louise Sayre <l3sayre@...> wrote: Hi Everyone, Need some advice, I going for my first on the 7th and am worried about being to tight. Guest guest
Hi Lou, Sure you don't want to go on the cruise 1st?...Just kidding....Don't sweat the 1st fill. Dr. A will do a good job. Just remember, it may take 2,3 or 4 fills for you to notice OR it may be just 1. If you can, hang out in Mexicalli for at-least a few hours if not overnight if it makes you feel better. Not to scare you but, I have been so tight before that I couldn't swallow spit! It was a rough night! Fortunately, I only had to drive 1.5 hrs the next day to get an un-fill, not Mexicali. I say better safe then sorry. Where are you going on your cruise?? I'm going to the Bahamas the end of June..my 1st too! Can't wait!! Good luck Lou! Guest guest
Hello to all, I had my first fill yesterday. It didn't hurt and my doc has no problem with Mexico WLS folks. He says it isn't really fair to discriminate we need a doctor too. I'm excited that my weight will start going down again now. I was getting really hungry in the evenings. My BMI has already gone down from 45 to 39! I'm thinking that maybe I can keep climbing this physical and emotional hill....especially with all of you. I have questions about the liquid to mushy phase now. They said five days till I'm on normal food again. ....how long for clear? How long for full liquids? and mushies? 245/215/
Guest guest
, I am curious when did you get banded and where are you at? I am scheduled to get banded on the 23rd so am getting a little nervous. I am wondering how long it took you to go from weight before surgery to now? Thanks for your help, Tonja > > Hello to all, > I had my first fill yesterday.
