Guest guest
Hi Kathy...oh I wish that I was there right now...I am actually going on July 24th. It would have been great to meet you. Hopefully someone off this board will be going around the same time that I am and I can have some company as I will be doing this journey alone. Good Luck!! Here's hoping for an uneventful surgery. Guest guest
Hi...I am glad to hear that you are happy with your sleeve. I have been wavering between the sleeve and the band for sometime now. I even as I write this am scared of getting the sleeve...but worry about the complications and all the 'upkeep' of the band. Although, I know that many many people love their band. I don't know what to do..waaaaaaaaaa....lol. Anyway, I would love to hear about your experience with Dr. Aceves and how you are adapting to the sleeve. Thanks for answering my post. Guest guest
I had band problems. I think it was a combination of two things. When a banded person is stressed their restriction increases. For me it increased a GREAT deal. That, and I just simply did not tolerate a band. Rare, but it happens. I wouldn't worry about it, my issues are not common. On Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 8:55 PM, <cindysdogpack@...> wrote: Hi What went into your decision to revise to the sleeve? Guest guest
Ladies, The bell boys at Hotel Lucerna are really awesome, just let them know if there is anything they can do for you and they will. Try to relax, you're making the right choice. You probably won't get to see Dr. Aceves much, but he is compenent and caring. Dr. Campos is awesome, if you have any problems or concerns while you're in the hospital just let him know (he's around much more often then Dr. Aceves). The sleeve is wonderful, it's been one of the best choices I've made for myself. Guest guest
Hi, Dr. Aceves actually visited me 6 times in the two days after I got the band. So did Dr. Campos. I really found them quite attentive. Tomorrow I graduate to mushies, but I haven't experienced much hunger since I got off the clear liquid torture, so I expect to mostly continue the protein shakes for awhile. Guest guest
I had my band placed on June 5th. The hotel is great. I wanted ice water. There are bottles of water in your room, but they are not cold. Hint. Take an extra plastic bag; I used thick trash bag. Ask at the front desk for a bag of ice. They will get if from one of the bars in the hotel and bring it to your room (no charge... I just tipped). Use one of the trash buckets, line it w/ your bag, put the bottles of water in the bag and pour ice over. You can't have the water the morning of surgery, but you can have it that evening before... sitting by the pool, or while relaxing in your room. Dr.Aceves made it to my room 4 times during my 2 day stay there (that's 3 times more than you get here in the US). Also, Dr.Campos and Dr. came to my room each time Dr.Aceves did as well as the 3 or 4 extra times the 2 other doctors came on their own. All in all, I saw my doctors about 10 - 12 times during my 2 day stay, not to mention that they also see you in the hallway while you are walking... and they know your name and they speak to you. Of course... the nursing staff sees you often as well. Serjio (spelling???) is wonderful. He is funny, polite, and kept me laughing. By the way.... if you are there soon... ask him to share his picture of his new baby boy. Guest guest
I agree, Dr Aceves and Dr Campos came to see me at least five or six times after my surgery. They were wonderful. They didn't seem to be in a hurry like the US Doctors. Can any one tell me the name of the third doctor? The one who put us to sleep? I can't remember his name. Guest guest
Hi What do you want to know about WS? I have WS Type 1 with an added little extra that the medical gurus haven't figured out yet. Excellent explanation here: http://rarediseases.about.com/cs/waardenburgsynd/a/030704.htm Basically, it has to do with pigmentation first - hair(white forelock, premature greyness) skin (white patches of skin that won't tan) eye colour (all sorts of odd colours and sometimes just bright blue) Secondary is the hearing loss (can range from total deafness at birth to a slight loss of hearing in middle age) There are also features that make WS recognisable if you know what you're looking for. Eyes very wide apart, small flat nose etc... The best thing you can do is ask for a referal to a Geneticist. He/she will do a blood test which is then sent away for analysis. This can take up to 8 or 9 months as they have to check for abnormalities in the Pax 3 chromosome. Of course, being an inherited syndrome, once you do know about it there's nothing you can do, there is no treatment, other than a hearing aid. Best of luck, and let me know if you need ot know anything else!
Guest guest
My surgeon was equally willing to do either my deaf ear or the one with some remaining hearing. I opted to do the right ( " good " ) ear simply because I usually (not always) am the one driving when my wife and I go in the car together so figured I could hear her better with it on that side. I considered the loss of the still functioning ear minimal because speech understanding was very nearly zero in it anyway. And my choice of brand was based at the time simply on battery type. My surgeon wouldn't recommend one brand over another. Virg > I'm somewhat apprehensive as I'm told the surgeon might > want to do my good (Severe) ear as opposed to my bad > (Profound) ear. Guest guest
Hi Bob. Welcome to CiHear. I, too, am 73 years old(till the 16th of next month). I received my Freedom CI in September 2005 . I, too, had the same reservations about doing my best ear. I was aware that some surgeons prefer doing the best ear since it may give a better chance of and quicker . Back then, I had the same reservations about doing my best ear. I was aware that some surgeons prefer doing the best ear since it may give a better a better and quicker chance of success. Despite that, my own intuition said go with the worst ear. When I finally got to talk with my surgeon at Kaiser Permanante and told her what I just told you,she said to go with the worst ear which I did. My problem was clarity, and at turn on I could hear speech clearly but high pitched(this was improved by a few program tweaks within the next few weeks. You will find many more of us on this forum had the worst ear done successfully. As it turned out, my then good ear has gotten progressively worse where without my CI I am not able to hear much of anything. Talk to your surgeon when the time comes and tell him/her how you feel. You may be surprised. As for which brand to go with, all 3 are very good. While you are waiting, do your research and ask any questions on this list. We have a lot of users with most of the answers from our own experience. Personally, I couldnt be happier with my CI. From: Bob <concho@...> Sent: Sunday, August 2, 2009 11:35:10 AM Subject: Introduction I am a 73 year old male with a Profound/Severe hearing loss going back to the early 80s. I've worn bilateral aids over that period to today with the loss progressing to the point where the profound ear has no ability to discern spoken words despite volume increases. I am a Korean War period veteran and receive medical services from the Veterans Administration. The VA finally recognized and approved my CI Candidacy. I just need a CT scan and an approval/discussion with the surgeon to get a scheduling date. The VA is quite slow so my timing may extend a couple months till surgery. I'm somewhat apprehensive as I'm told the surgeon might want to do my good (Severe) ear as opposed to my bad (Profound) ear. Reasoning, better chances of success, however if it doesn't work out, I'll join the totally deaf who can't benefit from appliances. If I'm to gamble, I'd prefer to gamble with the bad ear....8^) I also get a choice between a Cochlear Nucleus Freedom and the Advanced Bionics Harmony for hardware which I will discuss with the surgeon before committing to. Until it comes to pass, I'll lurk on the list and hopefully soak up some info from those of you who have gone through the experience.
