Anita,

It all depends on how long you have been banded. If you are still in

the healing phase then the liquid protein is fine. If you are more

than six weeks post-op then you should be getting almost all of your

protein in solid form.

The reason is not because liquid protein isn't used by the body. The

reason is because you don't get hungry as soon if you have solid food

in the pouch. Liquids run right on through into the lower stomach and

don't keep you full nearly as long.

Don't by pass folks malabsorb all of their food, hence their need to

take so many different supplements? The band is not malabsorbative and

food & drink we have gets into our system. Liquids do go right through

the band to the tummy but they are absorbed into the system, however it

is said they are useless calories and protein should be found in real

food so it stays in the pouch longer. I have an Isopure clear protein

zero carb drink a couple of times a week and like the taste (like kool

aid) but rarely need supplemental protein as I get it from food sources.

I have been told by my nurse who has had bypass surgery, that I need

to get my protein in food form. She says my taking it in liquid form

is no good. Basically anything in liquid form the body does not

asorb. I think she is totally off base but I need input from other

bandsters. I have been enjoying much of my protein with Trader Joes

chicken broth and two scoops of protein powder which give me 25 grams

of my daily protein need. Help!>>

Well, you DO need to get your proein from solid food, but not for the

reason she says. I'm afraid you must be careful of people who have

had the bypass, since their knowledhe base and personal experience is

VERY different from what bandters need to know and do. This nurse

needs to learn more about the BAND and it's needs, and the food needs

of Bandsters.

Solid protein is the only thing that makes the band work. soft and

liquids go right through, allowing you to eat way too much. You'll

get hungry way sooner if you don't eat solids, and be tempted to eat

between meals. If you eat solids, you shopuld be comfortably full

until the next scheduled mealtime. You absorb everything normally, so

you'll be getting in too many calories if you eat between meals.

A rule for Bandsters is " no liquid calories " - which includes protein

drinks and all other liquids with calories - juices, cream in coffee,

smoothies, milkshakes. the only exception is milk - we need 2 glasses

of skim milk a day for the calcium - or use another calcium source if

you can't drink milk. The protein powders are also not needed and

may sabotage your weight loss. Drink only calorie-free liquids -

water, tea, crystal lite, any of the flavored calorie-free waters,

and remember not to drink with meaqls or for an hour after - this

keeps the solid food in your pouch so you feel full.

There are exceptions to this, of coourse. A few people are so tight

in the morning (but can eat normally for lunch and dinner - impt)

that they can only have a liquid for breakfast - so a protein drink

here might be ok, as long as they contin ue to lose well (and " well "

is whatever YOU are happy with)

Most people have done best with following the bandster guidelines-

Solid protein first, then veggies, then a few bites of salad or

starch if there is room, which there usually will not be.

I'd suggest forgetting the broth and powder - try something like tuna

salad on crackers for lunch - both good protein and good fiber. Or

Chunky bean and ham soup with good fiber crackers.

In addition to protein, you also need 25 grams of fiber a day for

bowel health, including cancer prevention, and polyp and

diverticulitis prvention.

Sandy,

Thank-you so much for all the info on protein. I too believe this

nurse knows very little about band nutrition. There office is new at

doing the band.

Yes, true. But using it for a while probably won't hurt.

Why not? They're not doing anything illegal. No one said you have to

have all twelve ounces at once. I'd do just half of it, the other

half later.

The main issue is that you're just wasting the rest of it if you take

it all at once, so why do it?

Also, think of all the times in the past you've taken in way more than

that.....meats and fish are about seven grams per ounce, and I'm sure

that most of us have eaten eight ounces of meat at once....which is 56

grams right there.

My suggestions above. And, it isn't likely that doing the protein

powder/drink for a while will hurt. If you're body builder who is

taking in 300 or 400 grams a day, it might be different. And, the

main consumers of protein supplements are athletes, and particularly

body builders. That's why you see it sold in every gym in the world.

Yes, it cetainly is true. Most women bandsters need 50-60 grams a day

of protein, averaged over a week or so.

There are thousands of products on the market that are uselss,

dangerous, and even deadly. Protein drinks - as well as other

supplements and vitamins - are not FDA-regulated and they can make,

say, and sell anything they wish.

It is up to US to do our homework and choose carefully.

You're very recently banded, so protein drinks are ok for now, if you

need them. But if you are on " full liquids " you can have any pureed

food thinned to a coinsistency that would get through a straw. Puree

real meats, soy producst, different kinds of beans, and other foos

high in protein. you don't need the drinks at all. Only real food work

with the band - liquids never do.

different docs have different orders, so please follow YOUR doc's

orders.

Later, after you a on soft foods, avoid the protein drinks altogether

and eat solid foods that make the band work. Get your protein from any

of the real food sources. Do a web search to find all the different

foods that will provide the 50-60 grams of protein, 25 gm of fiber,

and 1200-1500 mg of Calcium we all need to do well with weight loss.

www.Fitday.com is a good free program that will help you track your

intaek as well as see the prteon/fiber contants of foods.

your doc should be guiding you through all this with written handouts

and guidelines. If he does not, just ask.

You might want to read over the document in the files here

called " Band EatingRules.. " for all the basic guilelines.

Welcome to your new healthier life!

I'm looking on the netrition website right now ... which EAS flavors

are the best?

I'm ordering the Whey Gormet Chocolate/PB and the Syntax as well ...

any other suggestions from there or other websites??

Oh, and thanks for putting the cost into perspective ... the price

freaked me out when I opened the website, Unjury wasn't that pricey.

Of course, it all boils down to taste for me. If the Unjury tastes

nasty and the other tastes better, I'll pay more for the other

anyday. LOL

Do you have any banded people that live near you? Any WLS patients? It's always best to get samples from those around you before buying any products. You might buy something and discover you think it's disgusting.

The EAS is pretty safe, most like it. The Whey Gourmet Choco/PB is fantastic even with water. Milk I'm sure is better but I don't use milk ... only water. The Matrix... some like it and some don't. I use Da Vinci S/F Raspberry syrup in my Chocolate Matrix and that is my favorite. I've been using that product since I was banded.

As to which EAS flavor, which flavors do you like? I have 6 different kinds of Chocolate already so I got the Strawberry. Vanilla is just boring. It's easy to spend a fortune finding a protein product you like. Not that it costs much per serving, it does not. But if you buy a $30 container THEN discover you don't like it, that's not good. I'd try begging for samples from those near you.

Can anyone tell me is there any side effects in mostly protein, as in bowel movements being loose as in diharea(spelling) and if so what can I add to counteract thisThanxDougSent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerryFrom: Bipley <Bipley@...>Date: Thu, 18 Feb 2010 14:49:22 -0700< >Subject: Re: Surgery Scheduled for Fed 15th Weight loss is double with a sleeve vs. a band.  Long term risks and complications are great in number for bands and few for sleeves.  Bands need a lifetime of aftercare, sleeves do not.  Less invasive does NOT mean safer long term.  The safest surgery long term of all WLS types is the sleeve. There is no getting stuck with a sleeve after the first couple of months.  We have no stoma, bands have stomas.  I feel stuffed, just ate 2oz of steak and I am stuffed full.On Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 1:34 PM, Vonnie <silverspoonkatie > wrote:>I would really like to know if you had the band and now the sleeve, why is it better. Doug,

you should be eating dense protein, but not exclusively protein. A small amount of veggies, a small amount of carbs will keep you balanced and "regular". If you get diahrrea, it should not be chronic.

Best wishes

Welcome!

Are you back on regular foods yet? How much protein does your band doc want?

The newer recomendations are about 100-120 gm a day for women, to support muscle

developement and weight loss.

There are documents in the files about protein foods that go into more detail,

and lots more info on the web, but here are some basics:

1. avoid protein drinks since they are liquid calories and the band doesn't work

with liquids. In a few cases, they can be ok or needed - like at time of band

trouble when we are on a liquid rest period.

2. Good bandster protein foods are eggs, tofu, beans, beef, pork, fish, chicken,

turkey, cheese, yogurt, milk, nuts in moderation, protein-enriched cereals (good

fiber here too).

Have some of these with every meal. Have others for snacks - like cheese and

crackers, maybe with some quality deli meat (not " lunch " meat - it's pure junk)

Also, don't worry if you do not get the exact amount of protein every day.

After surgery, we have several weeks worth of protein " stores " to get us thru

until we are eating solids again.

Then, with good bandster choices, we can easily meet protein needs. Don't forget

about fiber needs, too - adequate fiber is every bit as important as protein,

for both weight loss and health. We need about 25 gm of fiber a day, and people

usually have more trouble meeting that need than meeting the protein needs.

Costco has a protein drink that has 30 grams of protein and is also low sugar.

The case says Protein in big letters all the way across it, I believe it is

premiere.  It is sold by the pharmacy, and is NOT muscle milk, but it should be

next to it.

Hey Chrysi,

Go to a website called www.bodybuilding.com and they've got a lot of great whey

proteins you can choose from. All kinds of great flavors etc. So check that site

out and see what you can find because the protein from walmart sucks :)

Glad the baby girls is coming along nicely!

Hi ,

Don't panic about the protein right now. Carry some water (and room temp water worked best for me) around with you and sip it all day long. You can also make your own chicken broth (strain out any chicken and keep the broth and try to get in as much broth as you can. The chicken broth will taste good. You only have 5 more days to do this. Your old brain is thinking for you and its not used to you changing how you are eating and it takes awhile for you to get used to sipping water or some kind of fluid this first month. You actually just get tired of eating or trying to get the fluids in.

You can find this next product in most any grocery store--it is usually some place around the soup or Bouillon. It is in a glass jar and looks like paste and it is called " Better Than Bouillon." It is good and you can make a small amounts of it. It only has 1 gram of protein, but it is something. This is what I used and I would just sip on it during the day along with jello, water, white grape juice and I also had some all natural NO SUGAR popsicles too.

It does get better in the next 10 days and you can do this. The next 10 days is the creamy stage and you can have creamy soups and creamy protein. It takes n a lot effort on your part. I know it is hard, but you MUST keep sipping water and trying to eat a few things.

I went thru the very same thing. I had the revision surgery on Nov. 27th, 2010. I was extremely weak and stayed in bed a lot just to keep from passing out. I started sipping the low calorie orange gatorade all day, which only equalled maybe 4-6 oz's total. All other flavors made me sick. I had a little chicken broth, when I say a little, that's exactly what I mean. I also took the Prilosec no matter what each morning. I was trying to get in some good walks too. Several times, I had to lay down OUTSIDE, regain some strength just to get back home. I called Nina, she said don't worry about doing anything at this point other than trying to get enough liquids in. I drank a little a few sips of gatorade when I got at my worst and went to bed. I felt much stronger that evening. Like I said, gatorade light was the best drink that worked for me. Like all previous sleevers tell us .... the first 30 days is the absolute WORST. I didn't really understand what that meant until I experienced it. I remember thinking food would never taste or sound good again and even if it did, I didn't think I would ever get another bite down .... ever. I can tell you, after these first 30 days, your world begins to open up again, you gain strength, your desire for food returns but from what I've read and experienced, your taste buds really change. Just because you loved a certain food b4 surgery doesn't mean you will like it afterwards. You really don't know until you try various foods little by little if they will appeal to your senses again. Don't get discouraged or think these 30 days will last forever .... just 30 days! It's amazing how everything changes. Hang in there and KNOW that it will get better, just try to focus on those liquids so you don't get dehydrated again. The weight loss will make it ALL worth it!!!

Relax, sip slowly all day secret is to try and relax. Crushed ice let it melt sip slowly.

Relax.. add extra water/ice to the protein, try blending it with ice like a shake.
