Guest guest
RNY pts. malabsorb protein for life. Therefore, we recommend 2-3 hydrolized whey protein shakes/day as a meal supplement, NOT meal replacement. Guest guest
What about Syntrax Nectar products? I believe someone calculated these to have a high PDCAAS score. It is more of a juice flavor and not milk based. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of sbnorthro Sent: Wednesday, April 08, 2009 11:46 AM Subject: Protein Shakes I recently got a call from a pre-op lap-band patient who is concerned because every protein shake she's tried makes her nauseous and has even caused vomiting. We discussed various protein shake options, including unflavored Unjury with Crystal Light, Isopure Zero Carb., sugar-free CIB, etc. She says that it's initially the smell of the whey/soy protein and then the taste of either sends her over the edge and is unable to tolerate it. She's not a milk drinker at all (not even soy or rice milk) due to the consistency. Does anyone have any ideas/alternatives that she could try? She's willing to try anything! Guest guest
Attached is a handout myself and an intern I had recently created. I am working on a more complete list of supplements/meal replacements (in a messy excel file) but am waiting on a several companies to provide me with their AA profile. This lists some of the good/better products. Obviously, its not all inclusive and let me know what ya’ll think of it and any that we can collectively add as a group…. K. Guest guest
I agree with the brands recommended (more juice-type). Also, I find if patients use an insulated, coffee-type of mug, with the lid on, it limits their exposure to the smell of the supplement. Have them buy a new mug, not use an old coffee-tainted one, load it with ice, put in their juice-type protein drinks and usually that will work. They can also dilute with a flavor of Crystal-Lite that they like and sip on through the day. Guest guest
I don't have a PDCAA score on any of the products yet, but a lot of our patients like protein supplements from MyDietShopz.com. They even have liquid packets with 15g that you mix with water called ProtiDiet. Those are really tolerable and taste like Crystal Light. There are lots of non-chalky options available. Guest guest
There is also another great protein drink. I get it from Henry's, Trader Joes, or other health food stores. It is about $1.99 a can (like a soda can). http://www.pureprotein.net/pages/products.aspx?sku=046053 - this is a link so you can see the brand and what it looks like. I would search for a good price. It shouldn't be more than $1.50 per can if you buy it in bulk. The name is: PURE PROTEIN ShakeCarbs: 4Protein: 35 gramsSugar: 1 gramCalories: 180It has some great flavors too, Cookies and Cream, Strawberry, Peanut Butter Cup, Chocolate Milkshake, Vanilla, Banana Cream lots of different flavors!Even my 17 year old son thinks they taste great! So, a teenager gives his approval! I like them for a change from the Premier - although the Premier is great too...these have more variety and more protein.---
