Guest guest
gail, good luck with your battle..sounds like it's going to be a very tough one indeed..i always put a piece of tape on my hand to remind myself mentally my hand is 'taped down' and is NOT ALLOWED TO sign anything..i now bring everything home and review for at least a week..it makes the school very nervous...heheh but that is okay, they should be nervous... i hope you hang in there and know you have our support, or at least mine :-) take care, leah

At the age of three, the kids come under the Philly school district, but still receive EI services under a contract with a group called Elwin. It's just that after 3, the services are paid for by your SD. << It drives me crazy that these people that have never even seen Seth can make the decisions of what is best for him! >> Gail, this was my BIGGEST argument at Maddie's IEP to get her into MM. There were 12 of us at the table, and the ONLY two people fighting placement were also the ONLY two people who never met Maddie. Everybody else *got it*. You can be sure I made HUGE mention of that very point numerous times as they squabbled with us. <> Yep. I know what you mean Gail!!!! I kept Maddie home today. The other kids are off too, so I figure she and I needed it.....LOLOL <<Is there a combination of TEACH and ABA? I think Seth gets a mixture of the two. >> I believe you can combine many of these techniques. Basically TEACCH is a very visual (PECS) and schedule type program (so the kids can be aware of what's coming next and they implement work stations for each child) and ABA is repetitive/teaching by trials, reward system (they break goals down into very small tasks----kind of guaranteed success). I see no reason you couldn't individualize a specific program with both for a child. At MM, essentially they use a combo of ABA and floortime (they just don't call it that). Good Luck and write when you can!! I'm eager to hear how you made out!!! He was just so different acting than other downs kids. It did surprise me that in the little time the psych and doctor saw him at 2 years old that they could give that diagnosis though. It must have been very plain to them. No teachers or therapists think he is autistic though. My girls do the same thing your kids do! Very protective over Seth and we all think the strange things he does are so cute! LOL Some of the faces he makes when he's dangling a shoe or spinning a lid! LOL Just doesn't seem to me that any other human could look at him and see something bad, weird or ugly. I know they do, but as of yet, they have not made it known to us. LOL Probably scared the girls would scratch their eyes out! LOL I don't know if any of us have gone as far as to think his little, ummm, deposits are cute though! LOL That's real love!
