Hi Barb,

I had bought a Honeywell pleated replacement filter for my Honeywell

electronic cleaner. The furnace man who sold it to me did not trust

old electronic filters. It fit very well, but the MERV rating was

lower. My wife picked up a MERV 11 at Fleet Farm and it was made

well. I like to throw away the old and install new rather than

clean them.

Here is the one we had, they fit in place of electronic cleaners

Here is a place which custom makes any size, but the width is shy of

4 inches so if your size is found in the first link, you would be

better off there. But they do have exact replacements here which

would have the correct widths too.:

There is no HEPA filter that can work on a furnace, they restrict

too much. It is my understanding that MERV 11 filters have

technology that filters very well, but also allows airflow for your

furnace.

I cut some of those 3m filters for my furnace registers, mainly on

the pressure side and they really cut the airflow into the rooms

with them on and I found after a month, they were still clean so I

removed them. My Lennox pure air system and Broan Nutone HEPA air

exchanger is keeping the ducts clean enough I guess. The Lennox

only comes with MERV 9 which is light years ahead of what was

available just a few years ago, but I wanted Merv 11 and had one

custom made, the width was a little shy of the perfect 4 inch the

Lennox had but the rest of the dimentions were good. I do have the

HEPA, although it is hooked in bypass style and filters all the

time.

I wonder if a filter on your outside pipe would not restrict the

incoming air too much? You should at least have a screen to keep

out mice at least though.

Hope this helps,

Fletch
