Saline seeks building fixes

Public Works facility struggling with safety, health, space issues

Sunday, January 11, 2005

BY CHONG W. PYEN

A leaking roof, mold growth and poor ventilation are part of the

safety and health concerns at Saline's Department of Public Works

building, which recently forced one employee to be transferred to

another building, the City Council was told Monday.

The former manufacturing facility on North Maple Road, built in the

1950s and acquired by the city in 1979, currently houses public

works personnel and equipment, plus the Saline Area Senior Citizens

Center. Previously, it was also home to the city police department

and the 14-A District Court's branch courtroom.

Following a laboratory test of the air samples for mold, a female

employee with bad reaction to mold was relocated to the Municipal

Building, said City Manager Larry Stoever.

A portion of the building with 22,000 square feet had to be closed

at the advice of the fire chief due to water seeping into electric

fixtures, Stoever said.

" It's not good for anybody, " he said.

Danneffel, public works director, said the storage space for

large equipment, including street sweepers, trucks, snow plows and

sewer cleaners, are clustered so that sometimes all of it has to be

moved to get to a single piece.

" As far as the building (is concerned), it's terrible, " said Council

Member Hess. " It's a shame. "
