Guest guest
In the UK SID and cot death in particular has caused great concern. Many mothers have been jailed on suspicion of murder which was and is increasingly becoming a farce as expert opinion is being reversed or challenged resulting in the mothers being released. One of the main pieces of advice now given to mothers is, do not use old mattresses or mattresses used by another child. The thought is that mould may develop from previous dribbling, sick etc that had saturated the fabric and mattress. This page has not been peer reviewed. It has been previously proposed by Barry ( BA.) that toxic gas generated by fungi on fire retardant impregnated cot mattresses/covers could be the cause of SIDS. This theory was subsequently severely criticised by Warnock DW, et al Lancet 1995 and in the editorial. Whilst some of the specific points of \'s theory may have been incorrect (3)- ie incorrect identification of the fungus Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, and of gases generated by the microorganisms as stibine, arsine and phosphine, in broad terms the theory that an inhaled toxin that originates in the bedroom/cot environment has never been refuted. Indeed this seems to be the most likely explanation given that such candidates often leave little in the way of clues as to their presence and that inhaled toxins naturally affect breathing and this is central in SIDS. The only way to have tested the theory properly would have been to visit rooms where SIDS had occurred and assess the total environment and to carry out a wide range of post mortem and environmental tests. It would also be necessary to take account of additional cot factors- body heat, sweat, saliva, spilt drinks, urine etc. It is feasible that if you take \'s 2 protagonists and consider them individually and take account of genetic predisposition, you may have an answer to most SIDS cases. What are the possible candidates? It\'s likely that a number of prime causes and contributory factors lie behind SIDS and one should start by looking at a broad range of potential causes. 1. Guest guest
Years before I ever heard of Dr Sprott and the Hypothesis, I told people that the mold laying on horizonatal surfaces that was destroying my life must be the same mechanism for SIDS. A major portion of my avoidance strategy is based on understanding this effect. In fact we covered this topic years ago in this group and I put an article in the British Medical Journal describing this, and amazingly, (to me anyway) no one was interested and nobody responded. Yet understanding this mechanism of spore accumulation and production of complex neurotoxins on horizontal surfaces means my very life. This effect isn't limited to mattresses though, as you may recall in my post " Sick Thermal Syndrome " in which I describe flying my Hang Glider through a thermal containing potentiated spores from an area that had been deforested by a fire that was fought with polybrominated fire retardants from aerial bombing. I have never encountered strong mold spores in a natural setting unless that area had been treated with pesticides or fire retardant. Just like Dr Sprotts amazement that he could demonstrate the effect by SOLID RESULTS through the BabeSafe impermeable membrane, I am amazed that I can spend twenty years telling people about the mycotoxin connection and see the words leave make no impact on the human brain. I had a very interesting conversation with Rick M.S. -Lawrence Livermore Labs about this peculiar denial response in 1998 after he had given up trying to educate people on Tricothecene toxicity. He had found that the very people who were obviously suffering from mold toxicity would throw his information back in his face so hard that he just stopped trying to help. I told him that this was because people had been deceived so often that they just couldn't trust anything that sounded unfamiliar. But I said, " My situation is different. People will listen to me because I'm an original member of one of the most famous CFS clusters in the world. I won't have to make any effort to convince anyone. In fact no words will even be necessary - all I have to do is show that I was part of the Incline Village CFS epidemic and then show them pictures of myself on top of Mt Whitney. Only a brain dead moron could fail to see that the peculiarity in that, and when they ask how I did it, then I can tell them about the mold " . Rick said " You won't believe how hard they will fight you. I don't think it will work " . Well, after all these years... I have to admit. Rick was right and I was wrong. -
