Guest guest
, I'll have to give some of your cereal a try. I just want to say though, that some people have allergies to wheat and there is no question that they must give it up and other grains containing gluten as well. I wondered if I had an allergy to wheat at one time, because it seemed I always got brain fog after eating things with wheat in it. I am still not sure, but it may have been because of the fact that it was processed wheat and makes the insulin pour out, which as said, insulin is a big time baddie when it is made to pour out like that. Anyway, grains do have their benefits definitely with the fiber and B vitamins, but for sure there are alot of people who can't tolerate them. Wheat allergies are becoming more and more common, (like egg, corn and diary allergies as well) because these foods are EVERYWHERE and in everything, and the more you eat of the same food, the more likely there will be an allergy down the road. Our American diet just has too much of the same foods, and wheat is one of the most ubiquitious. I think there is truth in the idea of moderation in everything, but at the same time, I think some of our group members are right in avoiding wheat if they don't feel good eating it. Celiac disease can be very debilitating. (Celiacs can't eat gluten containing foods in any form). Eileen Swanson, of SOSalines found out she is a celiac, and my parents have a close friend who has been a celiac for years. If she eats anything with wheat in it, she gets deathly ill, and needs hospitalization-- it is that bad! So, I totally understand this avoidance of grains, and in fact, after Dr. Mercola's No Grain Diet book came out, I started really paying attention to the amount of grains I ate and cut it way back. I still eat Subway veggie sandwiches at times, but I am getting leary of the bread now, and just want to cut it out if I can. Salads are still the best way to get veggies. , I have one question though and I hope you can answer it? On the no grain diet, where do you get B vitamins? I know grains are full of those, but not sure what foods have B vitamins in large quantity aside from them? Do you? What does Dr. Mercola recommend? Thanks, Patty ----- Original Message ----- From: naturalbeauty38 Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2003 3:40 PM Subject: Re: when you say no grain I am curious about that. I believe that some grains are awesome for us. I have been eating whole grain cereal that I make from Wheat. I get it so cheap. It is the whole wheat grain. I keep them stored away in a cool dark pantry where they stay fresh and use them as i cook them. I take the whole grain and put it in the blender and grind them down not to powder but to where they are kind of crumbly. I take 1 cup grain to 3 cups water and bring to a boil then simmer till it's like an oatmeal consistency. THen I add fruit, like raisins, craisins, whatever I want to it and you can use sweetener cause it is bland without it you can use honey or sugar or whatever.this is one of the most perfect and wonderful ways to get all that good stuff in your body. It is full of B vitamins and fiber. It is really good for you. My mother in law is a health food guru and she brought me a bunch of books she has all about wheat and how it was even in biblical times thought to be one of the most perfect foods on earth. It is somewhere in the scriptures where god says "wheat is for man". It gives me a big rush of energy in the mornings and is great because I can make a nice batch at night and then have it ready to go in the morning I can cook up a nice big bowl of it and it fills me up and keeps me going till lunch even when I do a hard long workout and then head to work. SO I really do believe that to give up all grain is not a good idea. I think moderation is key and esp when your dealing with grains that are processed and have additives in them. This wheat that I make is 100% Wheat and nothing else and I think it is a wonderful food. It was definitly put on this earth by the lord for us to consume. I also feel that when you begin to to totally iliminate an entire food group your asking for problems later on. I don't beleive that any of these fad diets are wise. Where they tell you no carbs, no fats, no proteins no this or that. I feel that it is wise to get a variety of foods. I agree if you have allergies though you need to obviously be more cautious. I still think that for the majority of us carbs are good, we need them for our brains and our energy. I think that most of us can benefit from eating the wheat i am discussing here. I also kno that grains are def a good source or fiber and B vitamins.I know that i have not made huge sacrifices in my diet and that I am doing really well. I could probably eat better than I do because I do have that sweet tooth, but all in all I feel pretty good about what I eat. I also have been able to maintain my weight and fit into my size 2's and 4's so I know you don't need to deprive your body of carbs to be slender.Anyhow I really just feel strongly about this whole wheat! I love it. You guys should try this recipe out. it is yummy! My mother in law raised her entire family, 8 kids on this cereal and they are all healthy adults now! and my inlaws are 74 and going strong!Hugs
Guest guest
Hey Patty I think I did mention in my post that if your allergic to Wheat than of course that is a totally different matter. But to just eliminate an entire food group if your not allergic to it to me, makes no sense. I agree though there are allot of people with celiac disease and other issues that do need to avoid it. AGAIN THOUGH, I feel that many of these issues stem from people eating the processed crap that they sell in the stores. It was kind of interesting the way I came across this whole wheat issue to begin with. I was telling my husband that I wanted a hot cereal that was really hardy, I had been trying different ones like cream of wheat and oatmeal but none of them were really keeping me full very long. SO anyhow he of course new all about the whole wheat as a kid he was pretty much fed it every morning. WIth 8 kids to feed his mother was pretty savvy with ways to feed her large family without spending tons of money. They are cool people, they are really into all the health stuff, they take the oil of oregano everyday(my father in law says it cured his arthritis) anyhow, my hubby said he had the perfect food for me and he showed me this huge drum of wheat that we have in our basement that is our emergency food supply. Can you imagine? Ha ha he is really cute and always so prepared for anything. Anyhow this is how i got my introduction to the wheat. You can cook it a few different ways. Since I have been eating this wheat cereal in the mornings i have twice the energy as before and the best benefit of all! My system used to be very sluggish and i was dealing with constipation issues allot. Since I have been eating this cereal I have not had any constipation issues for months now. It has totally cleared that up. I have to say before I was eating all bran everyday, prunes, all that stuff, none of it worked like this cereal. Plus it is just so good in the mornings. I think that because your getting the whole wheat, the germ and all that it just really helps your digestive system stay healthy. I know it has made a difference in mine. Anyhow I hope that you will give it a try, i think you will like it and you add so many things to it that really make it yummy! I think my favorite things to add are raisins and craisins, some chopped nuts, and all natural maple syrup, just a tad. Yummy. Ha ha now I am getting hungry so I may just have to go get some! Guest guest
Sounds like you have a very health minded family you married into, that is so awesome! Your husband is ever the prepared man it sounds like! I know my family is so slow to pick up on this stuff...they think I am some kind of health nut and they still eat a standard American diet, all the meat, cheese, fatty foods. Ick! And of course, they all have health issues, every one of them. My sister has cholesterol of 340, and she is only one year older than me, that's pretty scary. Mine is 187, doing pretty good, and I know it is my healthy eating. Anyway, I am going to give your cereal a shot. I have wheat kernels in my pantry, as I used to grow wheatgrass for juicing. Of course, wheatgrass juice sets my head spinning, like all the other green juices. My good intentions went flat pretty fast! That's great, too, that this cereal fixed your constipation problems right up! I agree that whole grains are the way to go, if you can handle them. Guest guest
Patty, Most ill people with auto immune illnesses according to Dr Mercola are sensitive or allergic to wheat , all forms of gluton there of. I was against this for the longest time, as I love whole organic grains.... but he did an antibody test on me to see if I had gliadon antibodies (those with celiac or sensitivities always test positive for this antibody) it means you are sensitive for it, and may have Celiac. I did test positive, and have stayed away from all grains, processed or otherwise until I get better. He does believe, as you stated there is an overabundance of gluten in everything, like salad dressings, dairy, additives, grains, cereals, breads, ect. And people become too overloaded with it, esp. people with auto immune illnesses, however he does state that after a healing period, you may be able to add these back slowly over time, when stronger. He also addresses the insulin issue with any grain that is processed. I get my grains from vegetables, as he believes they act as grains increasing insulin, a small amount , are used for direst metabolism, and also give energy. I never ever feel sluggish incorporating all the veggies I do. Never. I don’t need any grains, and he is careful with 3 month testing under the sun to ensure you are never lacking one nutrient. So that is something I never worry about, ever. In answer your question re: b vitamins are found most in eggs as a rich source, as well as all meats, that is why most vegetarians are low on B's, as Dr mercola states. (my mother is a vegetarian, and argued his, and to her surprise tested low) I take a vitamin B supplement, b12, dissolvable, although I test awesome on my B levels, many ill people consume enough but do not intake it properly. He is recommending it for my numbness, and it is helping. I will add to caution, for a while I was taking Fatigued to Fantastic B complex, be careful of this, as it has B6 (85 MG), which in excess of over 50MG a day, can actually cause neurological symptoms, numbness and tingling, and even permanent damage to nerves. Something isn't it? However, B12 in large amounts is safe. I will email you his thoughts on wheat in the biblical sense, as many patients feel as does. I feel that it is important in many peoples diets, and actually according to his metabolic diets, and testing, some of his patients need it, and are told to consume it. However I do not, and tested sensitive for it for now. Hopefully, I will be able to incorporate it later on. ----- Original Message ----- From: naturalbeauty38 Sent: Friday, August 15, 2003 8:38 AM Subject: Re:Wheat, Hey Patty I think I did mention in my post that if your allergic to Wheat than of course that is a totally different matter. Guest guest
Hey I agree that if you have a diagnosed autoimmune illness and/or allergies, then of course the dietary issues would be different. I guess at first i was really strict with my diet too, after explant. In fact I did some pretty intense and serious dieting, cleansing and supplements, and I have off and on through out the last 3 years of this journey. I was really concerned of course when I had the high ANA tests that I was getting lupus too.I kind of went with my own little experiement once I started getting better and just started adding things here and there to see what happened. When I discovered that most things did not seem to make me feel any different I kind of started adding things back to my diet. In fact I actually started to feel better when I added some things back, esp whole grains. I don't know why except that there must be some things in there that were making me feel better. I sort of stopped questioning everything that I put in my mouth, maybe this is bad, or to some people seems wrong, but I just decided I was spending way too much money and time worrying about this stuff and decided to eat normal after about a year or so of totally worrying about everything and being so stressed on it. Today I am probably not eating as well as I should be, and I always feel like I should eat better. I mean I do eat healthy, and I eat allot of veggies and fruits and whole grains. I do not eat allot of pasta at all, and I try not to eat too much sugar but I do drink Chai everyday and I know it has sugar in it. I will eat splenda in some things to save the calories and I know everyone will tell me how bad it is, but so far I just feel like if I am ok, my labs are ok, i feel ok, in the long run the calories I can save will keep my wieght in control and that is healthy. I know I have talked to some others who are totally better too, or near better, and they pretty much have said that after trying to adhere to strict diets they just could not do it any longer and still got well. I am not by any means saying that anyone should not watch what they eat or that they should not avoid sugar or artificial sweeteners, I think it is just up to the individual , but most of the ladies I know have gotten better without being too tough on themselves in this way. I guess my point is that I do believe that we cn get better in allot of cases without totally restricting ourselves. Again I think the best way is to detox and be strict after explant and then kind of see how it goes. If you don't start to feel better then maybe more serious diets are required but I think it is also good to add some things back to see how you react to them too. I mean if your body will tolerate the grains then I think it is a sign that your individual needs may be different than someone elses. It is all about finding what works for you, and then learning to incorporate it into your lifestyle. your diet is very strict and I don't know if I could do it, but I guess if I had RA and the other stuff your dealing with I would probably have no choice. It sucks and I do hope that it will continue to help your symptoms. It is still so early in your recovery though that I would bet in a year or so you will be much better.
