Almost every silicone gel breast implant eventually ruptures, releasing chemicals into the body. Silicone implants have harmed hundreds of thousands of women and cost taxpayers millions of dollars. In 1992, serious concerns about their safety prompted the Food and Drug Administration to restrict them. Now, under pressure from the manufacturers, the FDA plans to put silicone implants back on the market – without adequate research.
