Guest guest
Hi , Well they are related to the chicken pox virus and commonly, you initially see a band of red spots. In my case this was on my body, and when I first noticed them, a red rash in a line, literally under my bra. So much so that I thought perhaps I'd had a reaction to soap powder. To start with the rash isn't too troublesome, but within a few days, they change dramatically, become blistered and excrutiatingly painful. The nerve endings erupt like neuralgia. For some unfortunate people, shingles can occur on their faces. In the elderly it's quite dangerous, because they are unable to handle the pain. I got them years ago, and the doctor said there wasn't anything I could take to relieve the pain, only to try and dry them by dusting them with talc. Now I gather there are medications out there. I was saying to , that my doctor told me that they tend to strike when your resistance is low, which is what happened to me. I think I'm right in saying though that like Chicken pox, you only get them once. I certainly hope so, I wouldn't want them again. They make you feel debilitated and run down for a good 4 to 6 weeks afterwards. Hope that helps. I'm sure there will be lots online, too to help clarify things more. > > > got the shingles. > > > I would be super grateful if someone could please describe what " the > shingles " are like. Anyway, I was taking my pill in the morning. I couldn't handle the exhaustion, so I switched my dosage to nighttime. (Although some people say that taking it at night gives them insomnia. Not me.) Night time worked better for me and the nausea stopped, the jaw clenching eventually stopped, but the tiredness -- while it is definately less, I still feel tired on the Lex. Guest guest
It won't change your personality or make you a new person. It's not a highly dramatic change, and it's not an innoculation against all unhappiness -- you'll still feel normally unpleasant feelings from time to time. What you should expect is an abatement of your depressive symptoms within about three to four weeks. What I've heard many people say is that it makes you feel like yourself again -- or feel like yourself on a good day. What you'll experience initially is the side effects. They are different for each individual, so there's no telling which ones you'll have. Insomnia or sleepiness, speediness or lethargy, dry mouth, sweating, headaches, loss or increase of appetite, loss of sex drive, etc. These will almost all go away by the third week. At that point, you should begin to feel the real effects of the drug. What you feel depends on how you manifested your depression. Low energy, hopelessness, crying, irritability, rage, rumination, compulsively negative thought-loops, listlessness, sadness, lack of pleasure, anxiety, panic? Whatever it is, it should go away or get much better. If it doesn't, ask your doctor if you should adjust your dose or try another medicine. People's reactions are individual and what works for one, does nothing for another. Many people need some type of dose adjustment after the first month. Too high a dose is as troublesome as too low. You need to develop acute self-awareness so that you can work effectively with your doctor to nail the correct dosage level. Try not to get discouraged waiting for the effects to kick in. It takes patience and a little fortitude to get through the initial period, but I can tell you that it's definitely worth it. > Hi, I am 47 and was just diagnosed with Major Depression and was > prescribed Lexapro. Guest guest
Hi, RJ. Personally I'm finding the Lexapro to be great so far. At first, you may have some side effects, but a lot of those go away. At least mine did. Just stick with it. You can not imagine right now how very much it will be worth it to feel mentally better. There IS a way out of this hell. Good luck and please keep posting so we can see how your progress is going. > hi I just was diagnosed as severe depression this morning and was > prescribed lexapro. Guest guest
Hi welcome to the group I too have a supportive family while on lexapro and they all pitch in and help. I would say that if your finince is not supportive of this temporary problem that you are having. I would problally drop him. Becase - if he can't handle a temporary problem how is he going to deal with a long time illness. If that would happen. And telling you that you are not trying hard enough. I would probally look for someone else who is understanding , who will help you and will listen when you need to talk. Dealing with this problem is hard enough and then being harrassed about it. I really think that will add more anxiety and depression problems. Which is what you are trying to elimate. Just my opinion Becky > > I was taking Paxil for anxiety (Agoraphobia) for almost 2 years. Guest guest
Hi Cyndi, what is your dosage? One month really isn't enough time to get stabilized on an SSRI. Maybe you need more time or an increase in dosage. As an aside, Lex works great for me but my sister didn't have much luck with it. (We are an OCD family, LOL) and she went on Celexa. It works great for her which is weird, considering it is Lex's first cousin. Well, whatever works. Ativan knocks me out too, I have no idea how anyone can abuse it unless they like to be knocked out. In any event, it is used as anaesthesia so I guess that is what it does best. Good luck, Cyndi Bohan <cynboh@...> wrote: Hi Kathy, I'm kind of new here as well, been on Lexapro for a month. Now, I'm worse and have the compulsive thoughts and depression etc. back full swing. My doc has advised I go off Lex and try something else which really upsets me because compared to other SSRI's, this has very minimal side effects for me. I've been taking a very low dose of Ativan too and that doesn't help, just knocks me out. It's very hard to find a happy medium somewhere but I know everybody can. Hang in there and I hope the Lex works for you.....many in this group have great success with it and my brother and Father swear by it. Guest guest
Thanks . I'm only on 10 mgs. but have gotten so much worse I don't see how two more weeks on this is going to help me. I'm hating the world right now 10 times more than when I first went on the Lexapro. ( I've had luck in the past with Celexa and Paxil but Paxil gave me sweats and weight gain.....not sure why I went off the Celexa. I wish I could remember in case my doc recommends that one! I do know the withdrawals from both of them were hell....... Either way, I guess I'll see what the doc decides at my appointment tomorrow. Oh to be normal again. Guest guest
I haven't gained any weight since starting Lexapro. Not everyone does. Guest guest
Lexapro started to work for me after week 3..... I have read that once you take it for 21 days you will have side effects with quitting. I went cold turkey after 12 weeks on it. (had not gained weight at that point, was also very very worried about that!) I have been told that at month 4 is when it changes the part in your brain making you store fat. (there is a great thread VERY long at drugs.com that I learned alot from!) When it did start working, I just had an incredible calmness from that point on. Like nothing bothered me. At drugs.com there is a HUGE amount of people that have quit lexapro. It seemed like just as many people had severe side effects when they tapered off lexapro than went cold turkey. That is one of the reasons I just went cold turkey on it. Wish you the best, but hang in there if your waiting for it to work. Guest guest
On Lexapro after a year and two days I started to get real bad acne and nodules on my head....yikes. I had to have them surgically removed. 1-90 people will get these hornlike nodules after 1-3 years use. -- Dan McIntyre " The New York Yankees " " We will meet the challenges of 2008 "
Guest guest
I have been on Lexapro for about six months and have had no trouble with it whatsoever. I feel better, I no longer cry all the time, and I've lost weight, not gained it. Maybe the people who are doing well on it don't post because they're not having trouble. Guest guest
That's interesting. I've never heard of that. Any links to information about this? Guest guest
Do you think after I had the horns removed I should've switched to another AD? -- Dan McIntyre " The New York Yankees " " We will meet the challenges of 2008 "
