Very interested to see mention of Trazodone for sleeping

I have been taking Lexapro for 6 weeks for severe general anxiety (after

trying to battle it without medication for 3 months) and my quality of life has

definitely improved

However I find a good night's sleep really helps - I sometimes take zopiclone

but it can only be used for short periods

I looked up Trazodone - apparently its a non ssri anti depressant which can be

used for anxiety and insomnia with reduced risk of dependency - I will ask my

doc about it

2.50 am or pm?

maybe try a smaller doze of Trazodone - perhaps you slept too long and got

some side effects of the Trazodone ???

I take Traz, 25 to 50mg a night. I sleep okay, but the Traz hangover is a

pain, though I have gotten semi-used to it. Hangover is usually less when I

take the lower dose.

Peace,

Trazodone made me really sick. I was given Traz to help me sleep

once. It made one pupil huge and the other a pinpoint.

This person posted offlist so no names. To my knowledge, trazodone

isn't used for psychosis (total break with reality) but it is used for

severe depression, which often includes a " bending " of reality. To

treat depression requires much higher doses that start at around 150

and gradually increase up to 500+ mgs. At those dosages you're going

to be plenty drowsy and disoriented. I've taken either 25 or 50 mgs of

trazodone every night for 10 years. I've never had to increase the

dosage. Likewise, friends have taken 100 mgs as a sleeping medicine

for years without any side effects during the daytime.

The problem is many non-psychiatrically trained doctors aren't very

knowledgeable about these kind of drugs (psychotropics)—so they'll

often give you flawed information or advice. If you mention trazodone

to some, they'll say no, that's for people with severe depression (or

anxiety)-- you're not depressed. You don't need that stuff. The point

is the smaller doses above won't affect depression or anxiety anyway!

The big advantage trazodone has over Ambien and benzodiazepines like

Halcion is that it's not addictive—you won't keep needing to up the

dosage and you won't suffer physical withdrawal symptoms if you stop.

Despite various claims that Ambien isn't addictive, many (myself

included) have found it to be and most doctors will not recommend

continuous use of it. The same is true of Halcion, a benzodiazepine, a

class of drugs that induces dependency.

Speaking from my own experience, when looking into these kinds of

prescription drugs, the right thing to do is see a reputable

psychopharmacologist.
