Guest guest
It didn't do much for me. I wasn't depressed but just wanted to quit wine for two months to lose weight so it was prescribed to me. Guest guest
Hey Mike! When I had a problem with my stim, I arranged a meeting with the rep, my pain management Dr and my neurosurgeon. It took some work on my part, but it was well worth it, as I got them all together and they were able to talk right there...no phone tag...and the issue was resolved much quicker than it ever would of been. Maybe this will help you out a wee bit. I hope so. I have two stims..When they placed my 2nd stim, they fractured three of my vertebras to place it. It didn't really help my legs too much and my back was in agony. Try to follow the instructions on the recuperation as much as possible. I will keep you in my prayers. Gentle hugs to all, Kathy g. THERE are a ton of posts a day- so a super busy group- lots of great information and some great ladies as well. I would suggest that you join this other group and then check out all the files and then do a search through the archived messages - there really is a ton of info just doing these things alone will answer a lot of questions. If not then be sure to ask. I am not sure what to do about this SPAM laden group - anybody have any ideas?? , glad you've heard about HCG and hope your able to start soon. Guest guest
My son (he's 10) has aspergers and adhd. I have my son on the GFCF diet, and his diet is generally free of chemicals -- especially food dyes. (Food dyes are often bad for those with ADHD.) In addition, we took him to a specialist for a brain mapping and then started him on neurofeedback. In the past, he has had physical and occupational therapy, since he tends to be rather uncoordinated (which his neurologists says often (but not always) comes with aspergers. When my son was younger he had hypotonia and very low reflexes, but through physical therapy he's gotten much stronger and improved his reflexes and balance. When he was in school, he did well in general ed class with an aide, but I had it written into his IEP that he could take sensory breaks when needed, which enabled him to get to a quiet room when, or if he just needed some physical releif he could jump on a mini trampoline or swing on monkey bars. We currently homeschool, which gives him a little more flexibility. He was doing fine in school, but it could be stressful. Studying at home has enabled him to pursue his many interests and go into subjects deeper than they do in school. He has endless questions and likes to know details. It also enables him to take extra music classes (since he loves music), and he plays violin in a homeschool band. It's actually helped his socialization, because he sees smaller groups of kids (such as those in his homeschool band or others in park groups or volunteer activities) and for shorter lengths of time than the six to seven hours of class. Good luck with everything. It sounds like he's getting good therapies. Is the speech primarily for social skills? Much speech therapy for aspies is to help them interact in small groups. That might be helpful to ask for in his next IEP, if it's not already included. Also with aspies, it helps if you take an interst in whatever topics they are obessessing on. My son becomes a little expert on different topics and so I just learn enough to be able to talk with him. Guest guest
Thanks Lora, i was just told my son has adhd. So i feel im in another ball game now. But I am going to talk to the school after summer break to change his i.e.p. Since its only for autism not adhd. Does hypotonia go in the i.e.p? My son has no reflexes in the knees which explains his hate for p.e. Or any sports. At school he gets counceled for his social skills and for his speech he recieves 30 min once a week because he struggles with the th sound. I will request a assesment when he returns for p.therapy and o.therapy. That is what regional center told me to request for. Can they have autism and OHI on there i.e.p. Or how does that work? Thanks so much on the info. Since everything is new to me. Welcome I want to welcome everyone who has joined this group in the last few weeks. I can't remember how many exactly, but it was over 30. Guest guest
Thanks for all the information Lora, since they added the adhd and hypotonia last week it has been very overwhelming. And I'm just trying to get info before he goes back to school in the beginning of August. RE: Welcome Hypotonia should be noted as part of his overall autism spectrum (aspergers) disorder. As we all know, these spectrum disorders have a slew of things that might accompany the diagnosis. But the hypotonia should be addressed, and I'm not sure that the schools will do enough on their own to give adequate physical therapy and occupational therapy. If it's like my son's district, they had very lame OT services, and did 20-min consultations every other week or so. They did -- for a time -- send him to an outside physical therapy clinic, which was great and much better than what the school staff provided. If you have private insurance, I would check into obtaining some therapy through it. If you're a client of the regional center, you can also request services through them. We are not clients of the regional center here. What happens with my son is we rotate therapies now that he's older. When we started out when he was just under two, it was intensive threrapies (Speech 3x a week; PT 3x a week and OT 2x a week). It was expensive but worth it. As he got older, we accepted what the schools offered, but then supplemented with private therapies. And now, we don't get any services from the school (since we homeschool), so we do it all through our insurance or paying ourselves. This has enabled us to target different therapies at different times. With hypotonia, you often have to keep up with certain exercises to keep the results the same. So, it is good to get a list of protocol that can be done at home that you know how to do with him. And, you need to be prepared to rotate services back in. School systems often end services in one area when they feel your child has reached a certain minimally satisfactory level, but these therapies often are needed to maintain your child's abilities, plus what his minimally satisfactory to them probably won't match your expectations for your child. I hope I made sense. I'm a terrible writer in the morning. All the best, Lora To

Guest guest
Hi am also new to the group with a 6 year old boy diagnosed with apsergers, ADHD - combined type, and speech disorder. There is evidence of him having auditory processing disorder however he is too young to get an accurate diagnosis. We are still trying to figure out the best therapies. He currently taking Daytona patch (not much during the summer), goes to speech class once a week and is in a 5 day all day " camp " that is called a bridge program to help kids 5-6 make the transition to 1st grade and kindergarten. At the end of kindergarten we debated on holding him back a year because of his physical and social immaturity. His teacher convinced us not to because he is doing well academically. She is worried that if we hold him back he would become bored with school and not develop academically. At the end of the school year we had his ARD for first grade and he will be going to an out class 3 times a week and have an aid in his classroom for about half the day. His gross motor skills are easily a year behind most of the other boys in his class. We want to have him start seeing an OT, but are afraid that he will get burned out since he is in speech and summer bridge program. He goes swimming a few times a week and participates in team sports. Since he is so far behind developing his gross motor skills he struggles more than the other children; but he still has fun and wants to keep playing. The other kids are pretty good with him so that is a BIG plus. I don't think he has discovered his competitive spirit yet, so struggling at sports does not really bother him. Other parents of aspie kids have told us to be sure to keep him involved with group activities so we intend to keep him in sports, choir, cub scouts, etc. as long as he is enjoying it. I understand we have a steep hill in front of us with his social development. He is very advanced with the computer and electronic games (Nintendo DS). We have to limit his time on both or he would stay on either for 24 hours. His kindergarten teacher was amazed on the first day of computer lab. On the first day of lab it is considered a success if the student can successfully log on to the computer by themselves. Not only did my son log on to the computer, he found a way to bypass the school's firewall and get to the Train games on the internet, lol! I would appreciate any advice from parents that have kids who are struggling with their gross motor skills. Would you recommend OT on top of the other activities he is doing? What exercises/activities would you recommend we do at home? Is a gymnastics type class recommended? He is our oldest child, so all of this is new. Thank you for creating this site; it is a wealth of information!!! > > Hi im new to the group. Guest guest
Hello, my name is Angel. My husband and I just received. Diagnosis on my 11 year old son of Aspergers, turrets, adhd and anxiety. We will be trying to get him an iep and an aid he does well in class, he is in an excelerated classroom he has a lot of problems with the unstructured times of the day. We also found out my six year old that he is adopting has autism and adhd she cannot verbalize very well, doesn't answer questions. She cannot stand to wear undies, she is usually off in her own little world and incredibly content with that. She has tons of toys and she never plays with them. She doesn't like to have to take care of her clothes or anything for that matter. We are planning to do an iep for her also and hopefully get her an aid. she was in a regular class for kindergarten she was the top of the class, so there is no need to remove her from a regular class There are also no support groups in our area and need help with effective discipline and ways to show our 7 other children relate, understand and cope. We are a blended family and that makes things all the more interesting. Thank you so much, it is nice to meet you.Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: "Emma Quiroz" <lovedbytwoangels@...>Sender: Autism and Aspergers Treatment Date: Sat, 26 Jun 2010 05:28:54 CDT<Autism and Aspergers Treatment >Reply Autism and Aspergers Treatment Subject: Re: Welcome Thanks i will check out the webiste. Guest guest
HI, I just wanted to mention re hypotonia.... our 12 yr old son with autism has hypotonia along with the other usual autism issues. The hypotonia alone can be a challenge, especially if the child cannot communicate to those who are pushing him to use his muscles more intensely or faster (PE, handwriting, speaking, sitting, standing, eating, motor planning, brushing teeth, grooming, dressing, tying, etc.). Hypotonia affects everything. Your 6 year old may have more involvement than recognized. Basically, not only are the muscles less tonic, less working than typical muscles, they also fatigue more quickly, need more frequent recovery, cause more tiredness, cause less " cooperation " due to pain and fatigue.... none of which many asperger/autistic people can communicate. A highly trained pediatric OT with autism experience can help. Most schools do NOT have pediatric OTs on staff. If OT on staff the usual issue addressed in IEP is handwriting. This barely addresses how hypotonia affects equal access to education. Hypotonia does not go away, it's simply part of the person. The person has to learn skills of recognizing and self-advocacy. One additional problem re self-advocacy is that when a condition has been present all a person's life, that person expects that everyone else has the condition also; the condition is viewed as " normal " by that person. If the condition is normal and peers appear to be functioning just fine, then the person with the condition assumes something is wrong with them (whimpy, weak, less deserving, etc.) when they are having difficulty and they often do not ask for help. This adds to problems of self-esteem, worthiness, etc. More time for any muscle work should be written into the IEP, especially as the child ages and his hands either don't work as fast or as well or as long as the typical student. This will affect handwriting, note taking, test taking, keyboarding time needed. PE can become a nightmare for the older student with hypotonia. Going from class to class in larger schools can be very difficult... it's the amount of time needed to get there and recovery time. Carrying a load of books also is a problem. Bully-types recognize the hypotonic child, this creates social problems, especially in middle school and above. Underlying fatigue and pain adds to stress levels which decreases the child's ability to learn. You will have to advocate for him within the school system as hypotonia is definitely not something any typical or special ed teacher learns during their training. Guest guest
Hi! My name is Lynn Stipe. I have three wonderful children on the spectrum. The TLC Boys(, Landon, and Conner). They are all different with different abilities. When they were little it was hard. Now they are older it is hard. We homeschool all three boys. It works great for our family. We are also involved with Special Olympics year round because of the skills level and the higher team level. We can find a sport for all the boys. I love getting the posts because i am interested in all therapies for Autism. My boys have had amazing doctors and therapists. Thanks for all the great information! Please feel free to introduce yourself, ask questions, answer other people's questions. Basically make yourself at home. And if anyone has had any good news, or anything happen that has made them excited, please share it. It isn't like most of us are over-burdened with good news in our own lives. One other matter: there seems to be an increase in people wanting to post ads for all sorts of things not directly connected with autism. If you have a product or service that is autism related that you want to promote, I am happy to see it posted here. But hair care products, pregnancy tips, courses in IT, etc, while they may be relevant to some of our members, are not directly related to autism and I won't be approving them. They will simply be deleted as SPAM Thank you [moderator]
