I am writing you at the suggestion of Nanci Linke-Ellis.

I am a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Implant and Auditory

Prosthesis at the House Ear Institute, working with Dr. . I am

conducting research on new ways of delivering sound to cochlear implant

users with newer Advanced Bionics devices (Clarion II or HiRes 90k).

Unfortunately, we have not been able to locate enough people with these

implants who are willing to participate in research and are trying to find

another 5 to 10 willing participants.

We are conducting multiple projects with the big goal of improving

perception in difficult listening conditions (i.e. music, or speech in

noise.) The Advanced Bionics implant has some special properties (the same

ones that allow virtual channels used for Fidelity 120), which we believe

can be used to provide cleaner sounding signals and possibly restore pitch

relationships (i.e. make a guitar chord sound like a proper chord again.)

However, we need a group of about 15 people to help us develop the basic

science.

I am currently looking for people who would be willing to participate in

experiments, which would be conducted typically over 2 to 3 sessions. A

session generally takes a full workday, for which you will be compensated at

the rate of $15/hour.

If you would be willing to participate in one (or more) of these

experiments, please let me know. Scheduling for the sessions is quite

flexible.

If you know anyone with a newer Advanced Bionics implant who might be

willing to participate, could you please forward this letter to them?

This research does not involve any changes to your map, nor will it require

you to take home a new processor. The research would be conducted at the

House Ear Institute at Los Angeles.

If you would be willing to participate or have any further questions, please

contact me. I can be reached by phone at 213-989-6748, by fax at

213-413-0950, or by email at dlandsberger@....

Many Thanks,

Landsberger, Ph.D.
